FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a playlist file and send gaming VODs to a YouTube Live event one after another. A finite playlist is not, by itself, a proven endless loop: the FFmpeg documentation describes sequential playback, not guaranteed restart after the final file. The workflow below shows how to prepare the playlist, configure YouTube ingest, and test a repeat strategy on your FFmpeg build before relying on it for a long-running stream.
Before you start
You need FFmpeg installed on a computer that can access the VOD files, a YouTube channel eligible to stream live, and a live event in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live-streaming help says the channel must be verified, must have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current account status in YouTube Studio; eligibility rules can change. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
Keep the VODs at stable local paths for the duration of the stream. Before building the list, check that the files have compatible stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. The concat demuxer joins packets; it does not automatically normalize unlike files. If the inputs differ, they may need transcoding or normalization, and the right settings depend on the actual files.
Make a concat playlist file
Create a plain-text file with one file directive per VOD. Save it as, for example, gaming-vods.ffconcat:

file '/media/game-three.mp4'The optional marker must be the exact first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, for FFmpeg to recognize the format automatically. Paths containing spaces or special characters need correct concat-file quoting or escaping; that syntax is separate from any quoting your shell requires. FFmpeg uses file duration information to calculate timestamps for the next input. Incorrect duration metadata can cause artifacts at transitions. If a file’s duration is known and its metadata is wrong, the concat script supports a duration directive to override it; verify the timing against the media rather than guessing.

Confirm whether the playlist repeats
The concat demuxer plays its listed files sequentially. Do not assume this finite script will restart forever: the cited FFmpeg documentation does not establish that behavior. Since the goal is rotation, test your chosen repeat method with the exact FFmpeg version and media you intend to use before scheduling a long stream.
- Run the playlist locally and confirm that every VOD plays in the intended order.
- Observe what happens after the final file. Confirm whether the process exits, stalls, or repeats; do not infer endless playback from a successful first pass.
- If you adopt a separate looping or playlist-generation approach, test it through multiple complete cycles and check that timestamps, audio, and transitions remain sound.
- Only use a tested process for the live event. The precise endless-rotation command is not established by the cited documentation, and behavior may depend on the FFmpeg build and the media.
Create the YouTube event and protect its stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
- Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into your FFmpeg configuration. Do not publish the key in screenshots, terminal transcripts, or shared commands: it functions like a password.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before using the event.
YouTube documents sending encoder output to the event’s stream URL with its stream key. Consult YouTube’s stream setup guidance for the current event workflow and key controls. Avoid placing the key in a command that may be retained in shell history or logs; use a safer local method appropriate to your operating system and FFmpeg setup.

Choose an encoder configuration for YouTube
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends RTMPS. The cited guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate must be matched to the applicable row in YouTube’s current settings rather than treated as one universal preset. YouTube live encoder settings
For H.264, YouTube’s current English guidance lists 1080p60 at 17 Mbps recommended and 6 Mbps minimum, and 1080p30 at 14 Mbps recommended and 5 Mbps minimum (accessed 2026-10-03). These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality or a substitute for adequate upload capacity. Choose the row for the output you actually send and test with your connection and gameplay.

For a basic RTMP/RTMPS workflow, your FFmpeg output must encode or pass through media in formats YouTube accepts and send it to the event URL using the key. There is no safe universal command here: the right command depends on input codecs, desired output, FFmpeg build, operating system, and how you safely supply credentials. Confirm output codec, resolution, frame rate, audio format, CBR behavior, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current encoder settings before going live.

- Start a test event or use an appropriate private/unlisted test setup, then check the Live Control Room preview.
- Use representative gameplay with movement and audio. Listen for missing, clipped, or discontinuous sound and watch for frozen video or unexpected changes at each VOD transition.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health while the encoder runs. A successful local FFmpeg process does not, by itself, prove YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Let the playlist run long enough to verify the intended duration and, if applicable, multiple repeat cycles.
- Check the event and any local archive afterward to confirm that the expected material was actually captured.

Common problems and fixes
- The playlist stops after the last VOD: a finite concat list is sequential, not established as an endless rotation. Test a repeat method on the intended FFmpeg build and media before the live event.
- FFmpeg cannot open a listed file: check the path, permissions, exact filename, and concat-file escaping. Remember that quoting in the playlist and shell quoting are different.
- Transitions show glitches or timestamp problems: check codec, stream layout, time-base compatibility, and duration metadata. Correct a verified bad duration with the concat demuxer’s duration directive, or normalize incompatible sources.
- YouTube preview or stream health is poor: check the event URL and key, ingest protocol, selected codec and bitrate row, CBR configuration, keyframe interval, and available upload capacity. Use YouTube’s health indication to narrow down whether the problem is local encoding or ingest.
- Video works but audio is absent or breaks between files: inspect each VOD’s audio streams and compatibility, then test transitions locally and in YouTube preview with representative material.
- The stream key may have been exposed: reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the key in the encoder setup.
Copyright and reused-content considerations
Playing a VOD as a live feed does not change the rights attached to its gameplay, music, overlays, or other included material. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s copyright rules and channel monetization policies if you intend to monetize. Repeating or rebroadcasting existing uploads does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization; policy decisions depend on the channel and its content. Check YouTube’s current copyright guidance and YouTube channel monetization policies.
