To run an always-on playlist from a server to YouTube Live, create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and stream key into your server’s encoder, then start the encoder and confirm that Live Control Room receives the video and audio. The key authenticates the encoder feed; it does not play or schedule the playlist. Your server and encoder supply and continuously send the media.
What the stream key does—and what it does not do
YouTube Help calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” In practical terms, the key is a sensitive credential the encoder uses with YouTube’s server URL to identify where to send its feed. It is not the playlist, a video file, or the public watch-page URL. The server-side playlist and encoder are responsible for keeping media moving and sending the resulting feed to YouTube. Check channel eligibility before configuring the server
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Initial enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the time you intend to begin. YouTube’s getting-started guidance states a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. These are YouTube requirements, not encoder settings. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
Set up the stream key and connect the encoder
- Create the YouTube event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live. Create a stream or open one you scheduled. In its stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. You can create a custom key if you want to reuse encoder settings across streams; make sure the selected event and key are the ones you intend to use. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password. Do not include a real key in a public script, screenshot, configuration example, or log. Limit access to the server configuration and any monitoring or backup systems that store it.
- Choose and configure the encoder. In the encoder running on your server, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in their corresponding fields. YouTube documents the encoder role and these connection details, but a playlist scheduler, daemon configuration, and exact field names depend on the software and its version. Use that encoder’s current documentation rather than assuming a universal command or configuration.
- Start sending the feed and check ingest. Start the encoder, then inspect the Live Control Room preview to verify that YouTube is receiving the stream. For a scheduled stream, follow the on-screen Go live step when the preview is ready. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the server URL and stream key into the encoder to start streaming. - End deliberately. When ending the broadcast, stop sending content from the encoder as YouTube instructs. If you intend the playlist to remain uninterrupted, do not stop it; instead, test the encoder’s reconnect behavior and the event’s operating workflow before leaving it unattended.
Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it
RTMPS is RTMP transported over TLS/SSL. YouTube supports it as a secure streaming option, but the ordinary RTMP URL may be what Live Control Room shows initially. Reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from the Live Control Room rather than assuming the default endpoint is encrypted. YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS

If the encoder reports the documented SSL error, YouTube advises checking that both the protocol and server are set to RTMPS; port 443 can be specified. Confirm the matching protocol and endpoint in the encoder’s own settings. Never put a real key into a troubleshooting example.
Prepare the playlist for unattended operation
A stream that appears live in YouTube is not proof that the playlist will keep advancing or recover cleanly. Before relying on it, test the whole workflow on the server, including playlist transitions, encoder restart, and what happens after a network interruption. YouTube’s help describes encoders sending a feed, but it does not prescribe a universal server playlist scheduler or operating-system recipe. Its encoder page lists a CamStreamer app as supporting “24/7 continuous streams”; that statement applies to that listed product, not to every encoder or playlist setup. - Watch the Live Control Room preview and check that both audio and video remain healthy.
- Test any configured backup encoder or failover path instead of assuming it will take over.
- Verify that the playlist advances across file boundaries and after a server or encoder restart.
- If a complete recording matters, configure and check an independent local recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its guidance does not establish that longer uninterrupted sessions will be archived in full.
- Open the event from your channel and watch page, including on a mobile device, before leaving it unattended.
YouTube recommends checking the preview, testing failover where configured, checking archive integrity, confirming accessibility, and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
Troubleshoot common connection problems
