To use AAF (Advanced Animation Framework) in Fallout 4, first match the framework and its add-ons to your exact game build, then follow the instructions for those specific releases. AAF is a framework, not a complete set of animations or features, and its controls and setup are not universal. Check the current AAF and add-on pages for their exact installation steps and keys.
First identify your Fallout 4 build and framework
Before installing anything, check which Fallout 4 version you have and whether you mean AAF itself or the separate NAF (Native Animation Framework) and NAF Bridge route. Frameworks, script extenders, dependencies, animation packs and XML configuration can have version-specific requirements. Do not assume instructions for one release or framework apply to another.

The NAF Bridge beginner guide is specifically for Fallout 4 OG 1.10.163.0 or 1.10.163.1. Those versions apply to that guide’s NAF Bridge setup; they are not universal AAF requirements. Check the current requirements on each mod page before choosing a route: AAF on Nexus Mods, Native Animation Framework (NAF), and NAF Bridge.
Choose the route that matches your add-ons

The NAF project describes NAF as a multi-character animation framework for Fallout 4. Its README provides context on AAF XML compatibility, but compatibility should be confirmed for the particular content and versions you plan to use: Deweh’s Native Animation Framework README.

Install dependencies and launch the documented way
Read the requirements and installation notes for the framework and every add-on before installing. If your chosen setup requires Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE), use the F4SE build appropriate to both your game and mods. F4SE extends Fallout 4’s scripting capabilities; its instructions say to launch with f4se_loader.exe when using it. Do not treat a load-order note for one distribution method as a universal rule. Bethesda’s advice to read a mod description for load-order requirements and adjust order in the in-game Creations menu applies to Bethesda Creations, not necessarily to externally installed AAF files. If you are using NAF Bridge, convert XML content as directed
The NAF Bridge beginner guide describes a workflow using NAFicator to convert XML content. Follow that guide for its stated game versions, and run the conversion again when you install or update XML files, as the guide instructs. This workflow is specific to NAF Bridge; it is not a general AAF installation step. See the NAF Bridge beginner guide and verify the current tool and framework requirements on their pages.

- Confirm the installed Fallout 4 build matches the requirements of your framework and dependencies.
- Check that each add-on supports the framework route you selected and that its requirements are installed.
- If your setup requires F4SE, verify that its version matches and launch using the loader specified in its instructions.
- For NAF Bridge, check whether XML content needs conversion again after a change.
- Consult the current instructions bundled with your installed framework release and the add-on’s own page for exact controls and troubleshooting.
There is no verified universal hotkey or one troubleshooting sequence that applies to every AAF setup. Use the documentation for your exact release rather than relying on a key listed for a different version or framework.
