Equip the elytra in your chest armor slot, get to a safe height, step off an edge, then press your configured jump control while falling to start gliding. Steer by aiming: look down to gain speed and up to slow down. An elytra lets you glide and control your descent; it is not ordinary self-powered flight.
How to start gliding with an elytra
- Equip it: Put the elytra in your chest armor slot.
- Find a safe launch point: Climb somewhere high with enough open space to glide and land. Avoid launching toward cliffs, walls, or other obstacles.
- Step off and deploy: Move off the edge. While you are falling, press the jump control configured for your keyboard, controller, or touchscreen. The wings open and you begin gliding. The official Minecraft overview of the elytra gives this same basic sequence, but does not list controls for each device.
How to steer and land
Aim down to gain speed and aim up to reduce it. Sharp turns also cost speed, so make gradual adjustments when you need to cover distance. Leave yourself open space to descend and land rather than aiming at a narrow ledge or obstacle.
Where to find an elytra
Minecraft’s overview places elytra in the treasure room of an End ship, which can be found in an End city. A shulker guards the ship, so be prepared to deal with it while exploring.
How to repair a damaged elytra
The official overview describes two repair methods: combine two elytra in an anvil, or repair with phantom membranes. It says each membrane restores about 25% durability and that membrane repair preserves enchantments. That percentage is an approximate figure reported in the article, not an independent test result. The source does not provide a full cost or availability comparison between the methods.
