Radicle is Roots’ opinionated starting point for WordPress projects. The preferred stack combines Acorn, Bedrock, Bud, Sage and Trellis. Radicle itself is not a replacement template language: Sage supplies the theme layer, and Acorn enables Blade views, view composers and related application services inside WordPress.
Sage uses Laravel’s Blade templating engine. A file ending in .blade.php is compiled into PHP before it is rendered. You write presentation with Blade directives such as @extends, @section, @yield and @include, while WordPress still decides which template to load through its established hierarchy.

That division is the key to using Radicle correctly:
- WordPress chooses the template according to the request, post type, slug and other hierarchy rules.
- Sage provides the theme structure and Blade integration.
- Acorn supplies the Laravel-inspired view layer, composers and view-cache commands.
- Bud and the asset toolchain build front-end resources for deployment.
- Bedrock and Trellis are optional parts of the preferred Roots setup for dependency management and provisioning.
Roots’ documentation currently identifies Sage version v11.2.1. Check the version used by your project before copying examples, because directory conventions and build tooling can change between major Sage releases.

Where Blade files go in a Radicle project
Place Blade views under resources/views/. Sage preserves the normal WordPress Template Hierarchy, so a correctly named file is selected for the same kinds of requests as a conventional PHP theme template.
A typical view tree includes:
resources/views/404.blade.phpfor a not-found response.resources/views/index.blade.phpas the broad fallback.resources/views/page.blade.phpfor ordinary pages.resources/views/search.blade.phpfor search results.resources/views/single.blade.phpfor individual posts.resources/views/template-custom.blade.phpfor a named custom page template.resources/views/front-page.blade.phpfor a static front page.resources/views/partials/for reusable fragments such as headers, footers, sidebars and cards.resources/views/layouts/app.blade.phpfor the base page shell.
The hierarchy remains convention-driven. For example, copy the general index view to author.blade.php for author archives or to home.blade.php for the posts index. A custom post type named gallery can use archive-gallery.blade.php. A page whose slug is about can use page-about.blade.php. These names are not arbitrary Blade aliases; they are the WordPress names Sage recognizes.
Set up the layout before building individual views
Use one base layout for the document structure that every page shares. This prevents each template from repeating the HTML shell and gives you a single place to change the header, scripts or main content regions.
{{-- resources/views/layouts/app.blade.php --}}
<html>
<body>
<header>@yield('header')</header>
<main>@yield('content')</main>
</body>
</html>
A child view extends that layout and fills its sections. The following pattern uses the standard page view and sends a local item to a reusable card partial:
{{-- resources/views/page.blade.php --}}
@extends('layouts.app')
@section('content')
<h1>{{ $title }}</h1>
@include('partials.card', ['item' => $item])
@endsection
@extends('layouts.app') points to resources/views/layouts/app.blade.php; dot notation represents directories. @section('content') supplies the child markup that the layout prints with @yield('content'). A layout can expose several sections, such as header, content and a footer slot.
When a child needs to add to a section defined by the parent instead of replacing it, use @parent inside that section. End every section with @endsection. Keeping the section names stable makes it easier to introduce another page type without duplicating the shell.

Build reusable partials with includes
Store small, repeated fragments in resources/views/partials/. Typical candidates are navigation, breadcrumbs, cards, pagination controls, comments and footer groups. Render a fragment with @include('partials.example-partial').
An included view receives its own scope. For a small, local input, pass a keyed array as the second argument:
@include('partials.card', ['item' => $item, 'showMeta' => true])
Inside the partial, those keys are available as variables. Passing data explicitly documents the contract between the parent and the fragment and avoids relying on unrelated variables that happen to exist in the parent view.
Use a partial when the markup is reused but the data preparation is simple. If several templates need the same query, transformation or conditional data, move that preparation into a Composer instead of repeating it in every view.
Create a custom WordPress page template with Blade
There are two common cases: a hierarchy-based template selected automatically by WordPress, and a named page template selected from the editor. Both are Blade files under resources/views/.
Use a hierarchy-based page view
- Create or copy
resources/views/page.blade.php. - For a slug-specific page, name the file
page-your-slug.blade.php; for example,page-about.blade.php. - Extend
layouts.appand place the page markup in the appropriate section. - Visit the matching WordPress page and confirm that the slug and page type select the intended view.
The slug-specific file takes precedence over the generic page view according to WordPress’s hierarchy. You do not register a separate Blade route for this case.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use a named custom template
- Copy a suitable view to
resources/views/template-custom.blade.php, or create a new file following the project’s existing naming convention. - Build the content with Blade sections and partials.
- In the WordPress page editor, choose the corresponding custom template when the theme exposes it.
- Save the page, clear compiled views if necessary, and reload the front end.
The exact editor label depends on how the Sage theme registers the template. Keep the file in the theme’s resources/views/ directory and preserve the expected WordPress template name; moving it elsewhere prevents Sage from discovering it.
Choose the right way to pass WordPress data
Blade is the presentation layer. Keep queries and substantial transformations out of the markup whenever practical. Radicle’s documented pattern is to use Composers to prepare data and bind it to views.

Use an include argument for local data
If a parent already has the value and only one fragment needs it, pass a keyed array to the include. This is appropriate for a card, button, badge or small navigation fragment. It keeps the dependency visible at the call site and avoids creating a Composer for a one-off value.
Use a Composer for repeated preparation
Choose a Composer when a view repeatedly needs queried, filtered or transformed data. The Composer becomes the place to prepare that data, while the Blade file focuses on loops, conditions and HTML. This separation makes the view easier to scan and gives several related views one consistent data source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA Composer is especially useful for:
- Preparing a collection that appears in several templates.
- Normalizing custom fields before rendering.
- Loading navigation or sidebar data shared by a group of views.
- Keeping WordPress query logic out of layouts and partials.
Do not move every variable into a global Composer automatically. Small values that belong to one include are clearer as explicit keyed arguments. The decision is about scope and reuse, not about replacing every PHP expression with a framework class.
Render values with the safer Blade syntax
Use {{ $value }} for escaped output, particularly for titles, labels, URLs and values that may contain user-controlled content. The escaped form is the safer default for untrusted values.
Blade also supports unescaped output with {!! $content !!}. The official Sage example uses that syntax for content that is already trusted. Only use it when you control or have deliberately sanitized the value; otherwise, unescaped markup can create a cross-site scripting vulnerability.
Understand template composition in practice
A maintainable Radicle theme normally has three layers:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Layout: the document shell and named insertion points in
layouts/app.blade.php. - Page view: the WordPress-specific template selected by the hierarchy.
- Partials: small reusable pieces included by one or more page views.
When a page needs a different shell, create another layout rather than filling the main layout with many unrelated conditionals. When only one region differs, keep the shared layout and override that section. If a repeated fragment needs data, pass it explicitly or bind it through a Composer. This structure limits the amount of WordPress and query logic that leaks into presentation files.
Build and deploy a Sage-based Radicle theme
A Blade file is source code, not the complete production artifact. A Sage deployment needs built assets and Composer dependencies installed on the target environment. Roots lists the following sequence for a Sage-based deployment:

- Build front-end assets with
npm run build. - Install production PHP dependencies with
composer install --no-dev --optimize-autoloader. - Upload the theme without the
node_modulesdirectory.
Use matching PHP versions in development and production. A version mismatch can produce failures that look like template or dependency problems even though the Blade source is correct.
Bud and the rest of the project’s asset tooling belong in the build process, not on the live server as an excuse to omit compiled assets. Verify that the generated theme contains the files expected by the production configuration before switching traffic.
Manage Blade’s compiled view cache with Acorn
Acorn provides commands for compiling and clearing Blade views:
wp acorn view:cachecompiles all Blade templates.wp acorn view:clearremoves the compiled views.wp acorn optimizecaches configuration and views as part of deployment optimization.
Use view:clear when a changed template appears not to take effect because an old compiled view is still being served. After clearing, reload the request so Acorn can compile the current source. On a production release, run the project’s documented optimization step after dependencies and built assets are in place.
Cache commands do not correct a wrong filename or hierarchy rule. If WordPress is selecting another template, clearing the cache only recompiles the wrong view. Check the request type and file name first, then clear compiled views after correcting the source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect Blade source files on the web server
A publicly reachable .blade.php file can be returned as plain text by a misconfigured web server. That would expose template source and potentially reveal application details. Roots supplies deny rules for both Nginx and Apache.
Users of Trellis or Radicle can normally skip the manual server-configuration section because provisioning is intended to apply the protection. Still, verify the generated environment and web-server rules in every deployment. Hosting configurations are not identical, and a project moved to another server should not inherit an assumption that the old rules remain active.
- Request a known
.blade.phppath from a non-authenticated browser or HTTP client and confirm it is denied rather than displayed. - Check both the public document root and any symlinked release directories.
- Review Nginx or Apache configuration after provisioning and after infrastructure changes.
- Keep source files outside a directly browsable directory whenever the deployment layout allows it.
This check is separate from Blade escaping. Escaping protects rendered values; server rules protect the template source itself.

Radicle/Sage Blade versus conventional WordPress PHP templates
Both approaches use WordPress’s hierarchy. The difference is how presentation, reuse and project tooling are organized.
| Concern | Conventional PHP theme | Radicle with Sage and Blade |
|---|---|---|
| Template selection | WordPress Template Hierarchy | WordPress Template Hierarchy preserved by Sage |
| Reusable structure | PHP includes and manually shared markup | Blade layouts, sections and partials |
| Data preparation | Often mixed into template PHP | Composers can separate preparation from presentation |
| Dependencies and build | Can be a simpler theme-only workflow | Uses the Roots stack, including Acorn, Composer and the project’s Bud/asset build process |
| View caching | Uses ordinary PHP execution and any separate caching layer | Acorn provides view:cache, view:clear and optimize |
| Source protection | PHP files still require correct server handling | .blade.php files additionally require deny rules so source cannot be served as text |
The official material does not publish benchmark figures comparing the two approaches. Treat performance as an implementation and hosting question, not as a guaranteed Blade advantage. The practical trade-off is clearer composition and data separation in exchange for the Roots build and dependency workflow.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
The view is not being selected
Check the request type and the exact filename first. A page slug uses page-slug.blade.php; a custom post type archive uses archive-posttype.blade.php; a static front page uses front-page.blade.php. Confirm the file is under resources/views/, not a similarly named directory.
An included partial cannot see a variable
Pass the value explicitly with the keyed second argument to @include. Included views have their own scope, so relying on an accidental parent variable makes the partial fragile.
Changes are not visible
After verifying that the correct file is being selected, run wp acorn view:clear and reload. If the issue concerns JavaScript or CSS rather than HTML, rebuild with npm run build and deploy the generated assets.
Deployment fails after dependency installation
Confirm that development and production use matching PHP versions, run composer install --no-dev --optimize-autoloader in the release process, and make sure the uploaded theme does not depend on node_modules being present.

A practical workflow for a new Radicle view
- Identify the WordPress request: page, post, archive, search, author, front page or fallback.
- Choose the hierarchy filename under
resources/views/. - Extend
layouts/app.blade.phpunless the page genuinely needs another shell. - Extract repeated markup into a partial under
resources/views/partials/. - Pass small, local values with an include’s keyed array.
- Move repeated queries or transformations into a Composer.
- Use escaped
{{ }}output by default and reserve{!! !!}for trusted content. - Clear compiled views when testing template changes.
- Build assets, install production dependencies and omit
node_modulesfrom the upload. - Verify PHP-version parity and test that web-server rules block direct Blade-source requests.
Following that sequence keeps WordPress responsible for routing, Blade responsible for composition, Composers responsible for view data, and deployment tooling responsible for reproducible production artifacts.
