How to Use Block Visibility in WordPress: Hide, Schedule, and Target Blocks Safely

A practical guide to WordPress block visibility: remove blocks from published output, hide them responsively, or show them conditionally to users, customers, and campaigns.

WordPress now has two distinct ways to control a block’s visibility. Use the core editor’s Omit from published content option when a block should not be delivered at all. Use device-based hiding only for responsive presentation. For schedules, login states, roles, URLs, customer data, metadata, or CRM tags, install and configure the Block Visibility plugin.

The distinction matters: omission is a server-side removal, while responsive hiding can leave the block in the page code. The steps below show which control to choose, how to configure conditional rules, and how to test the result without treating visual hiding as security.

What “block visibility” means in WordPress

A block can be present in the editor but absent from the published page, or it can be delivered to the browser and hidden at selected viewport sizes. Those outcomes are not equivalent.

  • Omit from published content: WordPress removes the block from the published output. Visitors, screen readers, and search engines do not receive or announce it.
  • Hide by device: WordPress keeps the block in the page code and visually hides it for selected desktop, tablet, or mobile sizes. The content may still be exposed to assistive technology, search engines, browser tools, or anyone inspecting the source.
  • Conditional visibility: The Block Visibility plugin evaluates rules such as login state, role, schedule, URL parameters, commerce data, or CRM tags before rendering a block.

Nick Diego’s Block Visibility listing describes the purpose plainly: “Visibility Controls determine whether a block should be visible to users on the front end of your website.” In practice, the first decision is whether you need true omission or merely a responsive presentation change.

Hide a block with WordPress core controls

Core controls are the quickest option when you are editing with the WordPress block editor and need either to remove a block from the public page or show it only on certain device classes.

Omit a block from the published page

  1. Open the post or page in the block editor.
  2. Select the block you want to suppress.
  3. Open the block toolbar’s Options menu and choose Hide. Depending on the installed WordPress version and editor layout, the same control may also be available in the block settings/sidebar or the Command Palette.
  4. Choose Omit from published content.
  5. Click Apply, then save or update the post/page.

The editor records the state with an icon in List View, so you can identify omitted blocks without opening each one. On the front end, the block is not part of the published response: it is not visible, announced by a screen reader, or available for search engines to crawl.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Hide a block for desktop, tablet, or mobile

  1. Select the block in the editor.
  2. Open Options → Hide (or the corresponding control in the sidebar or Command Palette).
  3. Select the device types on which the block should be hidden.
  4. Click Apply and update the post/page.

This is a responsive-design feature, not an access-control feature. The block remains in the page code and is hidden with presentation rules. Depending on the browser, theme, assistive technology, and indexing behavior, the content may still be available to screen readers, search engines, or anyone viewing source. WordPress explicitly warns: do not use device-based hiding for private or sensitive content.

Find hidden blocks later

Open List View to scan the document outline. A visibility icon marks blocks with a hide or omit state, making it easier to find a mobile-only notice, a desktop navigation variant, or a temporarily omitted section. The Command Palette can also expose the visibility action when the toolbar is crowded or a block is nested inside a group, column, or template part.

Install Block Visibility for conditional rules

Use the plugin when the rule depends on more than viewport size. It adds a Visibility panel to the block editor and can make a block appear only when a set of conditions is met.

  1. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins → Add New.
  2. Search for Block Visibility, install the official plugin listing, and activate it.
  3. Open the plugin’s settings if you need to review its available controls or integrations.
  4. Edit the post, page, template, or other block-based content that contains the target block.
  5. Select the block and open its Visibility panel.
  6. Create the block normally, choose one or more conditions, and set the values that should make it visible or hidden.
  7. Save or update the content, then test the result while signed in and signed out as appropriate.

The plugin’s controls are primarily server-side, so a block that fails its rule is generally not rendered. Screen-size visibility is the exception: that control uses CSS and has the same exposure limitations as other visual hiding.

Rules you can build with Block Visibility

The available controls let you express audience, timing, context, and commerce rules without duplicating an entire page. The exact controls shown depend on the plugin version and the integrations active on the site.

Schedules and recurring windows

Set a start date and end date for a block such as a launch banner, event notice, or limited promotion. The plugin also documents recurring rules by day of the week and time of day. A recurring schedule is useful for a weekday-only announcement or a message that appears during a daily live stream.

Check the site’s timezone before relying on a precise cutoff. Test both sides of the boundary, and remember that caching layers can serve an earlier rendered response after the rule has changed.

Login state, roles, and individual users

Show a block to logged-in users, logged-out visitors, or specific WordPress roles. The User Role control can target custom membership roles as well as customers, members, logged-in users, or logged-out visitors. Individual users can also be selected when a notice is intended for a small, known audience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use role rules for audience segmentation, not as a substitute for protecting a private document. A role-based block can control what is rendered on a page, but it does not automatically secure a file URL, an API response, an email attachment, or a copy stored elsewhere.

URL parameters and referral context

URL query-string conditions can tailor a block to a campaign link or referral source. For example, a page can display a campaign-specific explanation only when a known parameter is present. Keep the rule narrow and document the parameter name so editors do not accidentally expose a message on every URL variant.

Location and post context

Context rules can depend on location or the content being viewed. Use them for notices that belong only on selected posts, pages, post types, archives, or other parts of a site. A single block pattern can therefore serve several templates while appearing only where its condition matches.

Metadata, cookies, and custom fields

The documented controls include post metadata, user metadata, cookies, and Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) values. These are useful when another part of the site records a user preference, membership attribute, or editorial flag. Define what happens when a value is missing; an unset field should not silently turn a private-looking block into a public one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WooCommerce conditions

For stores, rules can use products, cart contents, and purchase history. A block might explain a product-specific upgrade, show a cart reminder only when a particular item is present, or display a post-purchase message after an order. Keep the condition aligned with the store’s privacy and caching configuration, because personalized output must not be cached and replayed for another visitor.

Easy Digital Downloads and WP Fusion

The listing also documents Easy Digital Downloads conditions for downloads, cart contents, and purchase history, plus WP Fusion tag conditions. These integrations are appropriate when visibility follows a digital-download entitlement or a CRM segment. Verify that the integration is active and that the tag, product, or download identifier used in the rule exactly matches the value stored by the connected system.

Core visibility versus Block Visibility

Choose the smallest tool that fully expresses the requirement. The comparison below focuses on behavior rather than a particular theme or page builder.

If the requirement is simply “remove this block for now,” core is easier. If the requirement is “show this block to customers who bought product X between Monday and Friday,” a conditional-visibility plugin is the appropriate category.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Use omission for non-public page content. When a block must not be delivered to visitors or crawlers, choose Omit from published content or a server-side conditional rule.
  • Never use CSS hiding for secrets. Device-based hiding leaves content in the response and may expose it through source inspection, assistive technology, indexing, or cached markup.
  • Protect files separately. A hidden download link does not secure the underlying media or document URL. Apply access controls where the file is served.
  • Review caching. Personalized blocks can leak if a page cache stores one visitor’s rendered version and serves it to another. Exclude personalized pages or vary the cache correctly.
  • Check alternate outputs. Feeds, REST responses, email templates, reusable patterns, and duplicated template parts may contain the same information even when one block is hidden.
  • Use real permissions for restricted data. Membership, customer, or staff-only information should be enforced by the system that owns the data, not only by an editor visibility rule.

Requirements and boundaries

Block Visibility requires the latest WordPress version and a theme that supports the block Editor. It does not add functionality to the Classic Editor and does not control Elementor or other page-builder content. Site Editor support is available from version 1.4.0 for block themes.

Before installing it, confirm that the content you need to target is actually a WordPress block. A shortcode, widget, or page-builder module may require that system’s own visibility feature. Also check whether the active theme uses a block template or a classic template, because that determines where the Site Editor and template-part controls are available.

A reliable testing workflow

Visibility bugs usually come from testing one state, one device, or one cached response. Use a small matrix before publishing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Test the editor state: Confirm the visibility icon appears in List View and that the intended block, not its parent Group or Column, carries the rule.
  2. Test anonymous access: Open a private browser window or sign out, then load the page directly.
  3. Test authenticated roles: Check each relevant role, including a user who should fail the condition.
  4. Test the boundary: For schedules, test immediately before and after the start, end, or recurring time.
  5. Test query strings: Load the clean URL and the exact campaign URL, including capitalization and parameter spelling.
  6. Test device rules: Use the responsive preview and a real browser width. Remember that CSS breakpoints can differ between the editor preview and the theme.
  7. Test source exposure: For anything sensitive, inspect the rendered HTML and page response. If the block is present but styled away, it is not private.
  8. Clear or bypass caches: Purge page, object, CDN, and browser caches before judging a rule that depends on a user, cookie, cart, or time.
  9. Check integrations: Verify the exact product, download, field, or CRM tag value supplied by the connected system.

Troubleshooting common failures

The Hide option is missing

Confirm that you selected a block in the block editor rather than a Classic Editor area or an unsupported page-builder module. Update WordPress if the control is expected in your version, and look in the block’s Options menu, sidebar, or Command Palette.

The block is still visible after choosing Omit

Check that you clicked Apply and saved the post or page. Make sure you did not hide a child while its parent contains a duplicate block. Then bypass caches and test the public URL while signed out.

A mobile-only block appears on desktop

Review which device types were selected and check the theme’s breakpoint behavior. Core device hiding is CSS-based; browser zoom, custom theme breakpoints, and nested styles can make the result differ from the editor preview.

A role or customer rule works for one visitor but not another

Confirm the account’s actual WordPress role, product or purchase status, and cookie state. Clear stale sessions and caches. If a page is served from a shared cache, exclude it from caching or configure the cache to vary by the relevant user state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The rule works in a post but not in a template

Check whether the template is edited in the Site Editor and whether the theme is a block theme. Block Visibility version 1.4.0 added Site Editor support for block themes; unsupported classic templates or page-builder content remain outside its scope.

WordPress’s evolving viewport controls

A WordPress 7.0 development note describes viewport visibility rules for desktop, tablet, and mobile, with Hide/Show controls in the toolbar, List View, and Command Palette. It presents later rule types as planned rather than universal behavior. Because core visibility features can change between releases, verify the labels and available rule types in the WordPress version installed on the site before documenting a version-specific workflow.

Choosing the right approach

  • Choose Omit from published content when no visitor or crawler should receive the block.
  • Choose core device hiding when the same information may be delivered but should be arranged differently for desktop, tablet, or mobile.
  • Choose Block Visibility when visibility depends on time, login state, role, user, URL, metadata, cookies, location, commerce, downloads, custom fields, or CRM tags.
  • Choose a dedicated authorization or membership system when the content, file, or data must be protected rather than merely omitted from one page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I hide a block without deleting it?

Yes. Select the block, open Options → Hide, choose Omit from published content or a device type, and apply the change. The block remains in the editor and is marked in List View.

Is a mobile-hidden block private?

No. Device hiding uses CSS and leaves the block in the page code. Use Omit from published content or server-side access controls for sensitive information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Block Visibility show a block only to logged-in customers?

Yes. Its Visibility panel can use login state, WordPress roles, customer or member roles, and WooCommerce purchase-related conditions. Test the result with caching disabled or correctly varied.

Does Block Visibility work with Elementor or the Classic Editor?

No. The documented plugin scope is the WordPress block editor; it does not control Elementor or other page-builder content and does not provide Classic Editor functionality.
