Enable cheats, enter slash commands in Minecraft chat, and check permissions and syntax on Xbox Bedrock Edition.

To use commands in Minecraft on Xbox, enable cheats in the world’s settings, open the in-game chat, and enter a slash command. Minecraft on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S is Bedrock Edition, so use Bedrock command syntax—not Java Edition instructions. Minecraft lists Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S among its supported Bedrock platforms.

Important: enabling cheats disables achievements in that world. If you want to keep earning achievements, leave cheats off in your main world and experiment in a separate one.

Before you enable cheats

Most commands require cheats to be enabled. The trade-off is that enabling cheats disables achievements in that world; switching cheats off afterward does not restore achievement eligibility there. Keep a separate world for command experiments if you want your main world to remain achievement-friendly. Microsoft’s Bedrock command introduction says cheats must be enabled before getting started with commands.

Enable cheats and check permissions

  1. Open the world’s creation settings before starting a new world, or open the edit settings for an existing world.
  2. Turn on the Activate Cheats setting. The setting name may vary slightly with game updates.
  3. Enter the world and try a command in chat. If commands still do not work, check whether you have Operator Commands permission. This permission can matter in existing worlds and when other players are using the world. Microsoft’s command tutorial covers cheats and operator permissions.

Command access can depend on both the world’s cheat setting and the permission level assigned to the player. The Bedrock command reference identifies permission requirements and whether cheats are required for individual commands.

Enter a command in chat

  1. Open the in-game chat. The Xbox button for opening chat can depend on the current controls and interface; if it is not apparent, check Minecraft’s current controls settings.
  2. Type a forward slash (/), followed by the command name. Add any arguments after the command name, separating them with spaces.
  3. Submit the command in chat. If it is accepted, the game carries it out or reports its result there.

For example, /time set noon changes the time to noon. /weather rain 10000 sets rain with a duration argument, and /gamemode survival PlayerName changes the named player’s game mode. These are Bedrock tutorial examples, not a complete command list; the valid syntax and available commands can change with game updates. Microsoft’s command tutorial shows these examples.

Check command names and syntax

Use chat autocomplete while entering a command, or type /help and a command name to check the syntax available in your game. For instance, /help time asks for help with the time command. This is safer than copying syntax for Java Edition or relying on an old command list. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference is useful for checking permissions and cheat requirements, but it also includes entries aimed at dedicated servers or editors; not every listed command applies to an ordinary Xbox world.

Chat commands or command blocks?

Method Best for What you need
Chat command Running a command manually, such as changing the time or weather. Cheats enabled where required, permission to use the command, and access to in-game chat.
Command block Setting up command behavior to run from a block in the world rather than typing the command each time. Command-block support enabled in world settings; command blocks can be edited only in Creative mode.

Command blocks are an optional in-game automation feature, not a separate accessory. In a newly created world, chat commands are needed to obtain the first command block. Microsoft’s Bedrock tutorial explains command-block settings and use.

If a command does not work

  • Nothing happens: Confirm that cheats are enabled if the command requires them, and that you have the necessary Operator Commands permission.
  • The game reports an error: Check the command spelling, spaces, arguments, and player name. Use autocomplete or /help <command> for the syntax your game accepts.
  • You cannot find the chat control: Check the current Minecraft controls rather than assuming a particular Xbox button.
  • You are trying to use a Java command: Look up the Bedrock version instead; Xbox uses Bedrock Edition.
  • You are following command-block instructions: Verify that command blocks are enabled in world settings and use Creative mode to edit them.
