CrossARK lets you move an ARK: Survival Ascended survivor, uploaded items, and eligible tamed creatures between maps that belong to the same permitted server cluster. At an Obelisk or Tek Transmitter, upload your survivor, place items in ARK Data, upload nearby tames through Creatures, then join the destination server and download each upload.

The transfer only works when the source and destination share a cluster and both servers allow the requested direction and object type. Official PvE, official PvP, unofficial, and local games do not all share the same transfer boundaries, and a map launch or special event can temporarily change the rules. Check the destination policy before committing valuable gear or creatures.

What CrossARK transfers actually do

CrossARK is ARK: Survival Ascended’s upload-and-download system. It stores a survivor, items, or tamed creatures at a transfer terminal so that the data can be retrieved from another map in the same cluster. It is not a universal connection between every server in the game.

A successful transfer has three separate parts: the cluster relationship, the server’s upload/download permissions, and the object-specific rules for survivors, items, or creatures. A server can belong to the same cluster as another map while still blocking one of those object types. A destination can also reject a creature that is not permitted on that map.

What you can move

Object Where it is uploaded Important condition
Survivor Upload Survivor in the transfer interface The destination must permit survivor downloads, and you must download the survivor after joining that server.
Items ARK Data Upload the items separately; inventory left on a creature is not carried by the creature upload.
Tamed creature Creatures The tame must be eligible for the destination map and close enough to the terminal. Remove its saddle, head gear, and inventory first.
Tribute data Tribute This tab is part of the documented interface, but the destination’s tribute-download policy still controls whether a download succeeds.

Creatures downloaded through the transfer interface automatically follow the player who performs the download. That makes it important to log in with the survivor who is supposed to receive the tame.

Check eligibility before uploading anything

Verify the cluster

Write down the exact source and destination server names and confirm that both maps share the same CrossARK cluster. Maps on unrelated clusters cannot use the normal transfer system, even when they run the same game mode. On a private cluster, the administrator must configure a shared cluster identity and shared transfer-data location; details appear in the administration section below.

Check game-mode boundaries

Official PvE transfers remain within the official PvE environment, and official PvP transfers remain within official PvP. Official servers and unofficial servers do not exchange data through the normal CrossARK mechanism. Local games are excluded as well. Do not upload a survivor assuming that an official character can be downloaded into a private or single-player session.

Read the destination’s current policy

Server groups can change transfer permissions for a map launch, an event, or a balance decision. Studio Wildcard announcements have described cases in which characters, items, and creatures could move only under stated restrictions. Treat the current announcement and the server’s own rules as authoritative for that cluster.

Confirm creature rules

Creature eligibility is not identical on every map. The destination can block foreign-dino downloads, and map-specific restrictions can prevent a normally transferable tame from appearing in the download list. Administrators can control this behavior with the CrossARKAllowForeignDinoDownloads setting. Check the destination before uploading a rare or irreplaceable creature.

Plan around timers

In multiplayer, creatures and items uploaded to ARK Data normally expire after 24 hours. An administrator can change that value. Treat the displayed timer as a hard deadline unless the server owner has explicitly confirmed a different setting. Official servers also document a 43,200-second (12-hour) minimum dino reupload interval; this is a documented official-server setting, not a universal timer for every hosted configuration.

Step-by-step: move a survivor, items, and a tame

1. Prepare the destination plan

  1. Confirm that the destination map is in the same CrossARK cluster.
  2. Check whether the source and destination allow uploads and downloads for survivors, items, and creatures.
  3. Read any current event or map-launch notice for temporary restrictions.
  4. Check foreign-creature rules and map-specific creature restrictions if you are moving a tame.
  5. Make sure you can join the destination before the upload deadline expires.

If any of these checks fail, do not upload yet. An upload can leave your assets unavailable until an administrator changes the policy or the timer runs out.

2. Reach an Obelisk or Tek Transmitter

Use an Obelisk or a Tek Transmitter and open its transfer interface. The documented tabs are ARK Data, Creatures, and Tribute. The survivor command is presented as Upload Survivor in this interface.

3. Upload items through ARK Data

  1. Open the ARK Data tab.
  2. Move the items you want to transport into the ARK Data storage area.
  3. Verify that every intended item appears in the upload list before leaving the terminal.
  4. Note the expiration time shown by the server and plan to retrieve the items on the destination map.

Do not rely on a creature upload to carry equipment. A tame’s inventory, saddle, and head gear are dropped from the transfer process and must be handled separately.

4. Prepare and upload the creature

  1. Bring the tame close enough to the Obelisk or Tek Transmitter for it to appear in the Creatures tab.
  2. Remove the saddle.
  3. Remove head gear and every item from the creature’s inventory.
  4. Open Creatures, select the intended tame, and confirm the upload.
  5. Check that the creature appears in the uploaded-creature list before leaving.

Removing the equipment is not cosmetic: the transfer drops those contents. Put the saddle, armor, ammunition, and other items into ARK Data if they need to travel with you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Upload the survivor

  1. Return to the transfer interface.
  2. Choose Upload Survivor.
  3. Read the confirmation carefully and accept only after you are ready to leave the source map.
  4. Exit to the server-selection screen rather than attempting to continue playing on the source map with an uploaded survivor.

Your character is now stored for download. The destination still needs to allow survivor downloads; a shared cluster by itself does not guarantee that permission.

6. Join the destination server

  1. Select the destination map in the same cluster.
  2. Join with the account that uploaded the survivor.
  3. At the destination’s Obelisk or Tek Transmitter, open the transfer interface.
  4. Download the survivor first so that you are playing the intended character on the new map.

If the survivor is not available, stop and investigate the policy or cluster configuration before attempting additional uploads. Creating a replacement survivor can make it harder to identify which upload is valid.

7. Download items and creatures

  1. Open ARK Data and retrieve each uploaded item.
  2. Open Creatures and download the tame after confirming that the destination allows it.
  3. Place the saddle and other equipment back on the creature.
  4. Check the creature’s health, inventory, and location before leaving the terminal area.

The creature follows the player who downloads it. If another tribe member performs the download, the tame follows that player instead of automatically appearing beside the survivor who uploaded it.

Understanding the transfer interface

ARK Data

ARK Data is the general storage area for item transfers. It is the correct place for resources, weapons, armor, blueprints, saddles, and the equipment removed from a tame. The multiplayer expiration applies to items stored there unless the administrator has changed the setting.

Creatures

The Creatures tab lists eligible tames near the terminal after you begin the upload. A creature can be absent because it is too far away, because the upload was blocked, because the server disallows dino uploads, or because the destination’s foreign-dino or map rules would reject it. Remove all carried contents before confirming the upload.

Tribute

Tribute is a separate transfer category in the interface. Whether tribute downloads work depends on the server’s policy. Private-cluster administrators should review noTributeDownloads for every map rather than assuming that a visible tab means downloads are enabled.

Upload Survivor

Uploading a survivor moves the character data, not the entire base or every item in the character’s inventory. Store the items you intend to keep in ARK Data and upload creatures separately before leaving the source map.

Why a survivor or upload may be missing

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The destination does not appear in the transfer route The maps are not in the same cluster, or the current event policy blocks the route. Cluster membership, game-mode boundary, and the latest server announcement.
Upload Survivor is unavailable Survivor uploads are disabled on the source server. The source server’s survivor-upload setting and current policy.
The survivor cannot be downloaded Destination survivor downloads are disabled, or the upload is no longer valid. PreventDownloadSurvivors, expiration status, and the destination’s rules.
An item is gone from ARK Data The multiplayer expiration elapsed, or item downloads are blocked. The timer, PreventDownloadItems, and any administrator override.
A tame is not listed It was too far from the terminal, dino uploads are blocked, or the tame is not eligible. Proximity, PreventUploadDinos, map restrictions, and creature eligibility.
The tame uploads but cannot be downloaded The destination blocks dino downloads or foreign creatures. PreventDownloadDinos, CrossARKAllowForeignDinoDownloads, and map rules.
The saddle or inventory is missing Those contents do not travel with the creature upload. Retrieve them from ARK Data if they were uploaded separately.
A downloaded tame follows the wrong player Another player performed the download. Have the intended survivor perform the creature download.

When contacting an administrator, provide the source map, destination map, survivor name, approximate upload time, object type, and the exact error or missing-list behavior. This gives the administrator enough information to distinguish a timer expiration from a policy block.

Setting up CrossARK on a private cluster

A private ASA cluster needs more than several servers running under one host. Each map must use the same cluster identity and a shared location for transfer data. The configuration reference documents ClusterDirOverride as the cross-server storage path and requires a cluster ID. If servers write to different locations or use different IDs, they behave like separate clusters even when they are operated by the same administrator.

Core configuration checks

Setting or requirement Purpose Review on
Cluster ID Gives all participating maps the same cluster identity. Every map server in the cluster.
ClusterDirOverride Points servers to the shared transfer-data directory. Every map server, with a path that all can read and write.
PreventUploadDinos Controls whether players can upload tamed creatures. Each source map.
PreventUploadItems Controls item uploads to ARK Data. Each source map.
PreventUploadSurvivors Controls survivor uploads. Each source map.
PreventDownloadDinos Controls creature downloads. Each destination map.
PreventDownloadItems Controls item downloads. Each destination map.
PreventDownloadSurvivors Controls survivor downloads. Each destination map.
noTributeDownloads Controls tribute downloads. Each destination map.
CrossARKAllowForeignDinoDownloads Controls whether foreign creatures may be downloaded. Each destination map where cross-map tames are expected.

Validate storage before opening the cluster

  1. Stop or restart servers according to the host’s configuration procedure after applying the same cluster ID and shared directory.
  2. Confirm that every map process can access the shared directory with the required read and write permissions.
  3. Test with a low-value item before allowing players to move valuable creatures.
  4. Upload the test item on one map, join a second map, and verify that it appears and can be downloaded.
  5. Repeat the test with a disposable tame if creature transfers are part of the cluster’s rules.
  6. Document which maps allow uploads, downloads, foreign creatures, and tribute so players can see the route before they commit assets.

A host may expose these options under different labels, but the underlying requirements remain the same: one cluster identity, one shared transfer-data location, and compatible restrictions on every map.

Timers and reupload behavior

The documented official-server minimum for a dino reupload interval is 43,200 seconds, or 12 hours. Hosted configurations can differ, so administrators should publish their actual values rather than presenting the official figure as a universal rule. Item and creature uploads also have the normal 24-hour multiplayer ARK-Data expiration unless the administrator changes it. Players need both values: the expiration deadline for retrieval and any delay before a creature can be uploaded again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing an official, hosted, or self-managed setup

The right setup depends less on the number of maps than on who controls the transfer policy and storage. Compare these points before moving a long-term character or breeding line.

Decision axis Official cluster Hosted private cluster Self-managed cluster
Shared cluster membership Defined by the official server group. Configured by the host or administrator. Configured directly by the owner.
Upload/download restrictions May change through official policy or events. Depends on the host’s controls and the administrator’s settings. Controlled by the owner through server configuration.
Expiration and reupload timers Use the current official values and announcements. Verify the host’s actual values. Set and publish the values used by the cluster.
Foreign-creature rules Follow the destination map’s official rules. Check the destination configuration. Set and document CrossARKAllowForeignDinoDownloads.
Platform and game-mode compatibility Bound by the official server group. Confirm compatibility with the host and selected maps. Confirm compatibility before deploying every map.
Administrative control Limited to published official policy. Shared between the provider’s controls and the cluster owner. Highest control, with responsibility for storage, permissions, and recovery.

For any setup, ask six questions before transferring: Are the maps in one cluster? Are uploads and downloads enabled in both directions? What are the expiration and reupload timers? Are foreign creatures allowed? Are the game mode and platform compatible? Who can change the configuration or recover a failed upload?

Safe-transfer checklist

  • Confirm the exact source and destination maps.
  • Verify shared CrossARK cluster membership.
  • Check current event, launch, and mode-specific restrictions.
  • Separate items from creature inventories.
  • Remove saddles and head gear before a creature upload.
  • Upload valuable items through ARK Data.
  • Record the upload time and displayed expiration.
  • Download the survivor before retrieving assets on the destination.
  • Have the intended player download the creature.
  • Restore the saddle and equipment only after the tame is safely on the destination map.
  • Contact the administrator promptly if an upload is missing; do not wait for the expiration window to pass.
