Dolphin is a free, open-source emulator for GameCube and Wii games. To use it on Windows, download Dolphin from its official website, extract or install it, add your own legally created game dumps, configure a controller, and launch a game. Start with default graphics settings, then tune performance or image quality one change at a time.

What Dolphin Emulator Does

Dolphin emulates Nintendo GameCube and Wii hardware on a PC. It is not a game collection, storefront, or source of commercial ROMs. Dolphin does not include GameCube or Wii games, and it is not affiliated with Nintendo. The emulator is free and open source; its source code is available on GitHub.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

You should use game dumps created from games you legally obtained, subject to the law where you live. Owning a disc does not automatically make every online download lawful, so do not download commercial ISO files from ROM sites or use unofficial “preloaded” Dolphin packages. Dolphin’s own guidance is available in its game-dump FAQ.

What You Need Before Installing

  • A 64-bit Windows installation. Dolphin’s documented requirement is Windows 10 version 1903 or later; use a current supported Windows release where possible.
  • A modern CPU with strong per-core performance. SSE2 is required, and a modern dual-core processor around 3 GHz or better is a useful baseline. Dolphin generally benefits more from IPC and clock speed than from a very high core count.
  • A GPU supporting Direct3D 11.1 or OpenGL 4.4. Direct3D is often a good first choice on Windows, particularly on many AMD systems, although Vulkan or OpenGL may perform better for a specific game or driver.
  • At least 2 GB of RAM according to Dolphin’s FAQ. RAM is rarely the main performance limit on a modern Windows PC.
  • Game dumps stored in a normal local folder.
  • A controller if you want a better experience than keyboard controls.

Dolphin is relatively lightweight compared with modern PC games, but launching the emulator does not guarantee full-speed performance in every title. Game complexity, CPU performance, graphics drivers, backend, and enhancements all matter. See Dolphin’s system requirements for the project’s current guidance.

  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

Choose the Right Dolphin Build

Download Dolphin only from the official download page. It normally offers three practical channels:

Build Best for Trade-off
Release A fixed version and repeatable setup May not contain newer fixes
Beta Most beginners Less conservative than an established release, but tested and intended to be reliable
Development New fixes, optimizations, or game-specific compatibility work Frequent updates and possible regressions

For most users, choose the latest official beta or release shown on Dolphin’s download page. Try a development build when the Dolphin Wiki or a known issue specifically indicates that it fixes your problem.

Download and Install Dolphin on Windows

  1. Open Dolphin’s official download page.
  2. Choose Windows x64 for a conventional Intel- or AMD-based 64-bit PC. Choose Windows ARM64 only for a compatible ARM-based Windows computer.
  3. Download the archive or installer provided by the official site.
  4. If you downloaded an archive, extract the entire folder to a writable local location such as C:GamesDolphin or D:EmulatorsDolphin.
  5. Run Dolphin.exe. Do not run the program from inside the compressed archive.

An extracted folder can be removed by deleting it. An NSIS-installed version can be removed through Windows’ normal uninstall controls, as described in Dolphin’s uninstallation documentation.

Avoid putting the emulator or its user data in OneDrive, iCloud, a network share, or another synchronized folder while troubleshooting. Cloud synchronization and permissions can prevent settings from being saved or make game files temporarily unavailable.

If Windows reports a missing DLL

If Dolphin reports that MSVCP__.dll or vcruntime__.dll is missing, install or repair the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft’s official page. Do not download individual DLL files from random websites.

Add Your Game Dumps

Dolphin supports several disc-image formats, including GCM, ISO, GCZ, CISO, WBFS, WIA, NFS, and RVZ. RVZ is generally the preferred format when compressing a dump because it is designed to reduce file size while retaining the required game data. WBFS and CISO use lossy compression, so do not convert files without understanding the consequences.

  1. Create a dedicated folder, such as D:GameCube Wii Games.
  2. Place your legally created dumps in that folder.
  3. Open Dolphin’s game-path or library settings and add the folder. Menu labels can vary between builds.
  4. Refresh or rescan the game list.

If no games appear, make sure the files are fully extracted rather than still inside ZIP or RAR archives, use a supported format, add the folder containing the files rather than an unrelated shortcut, and confirm the folder is locally available. Dolphin’s supported-format FAQ lists the current formats.

Configure a Controller

GameCube games

  1. Open Controllers.
  2. For the required GameCube port, select Standard Controller.
  3. Select the keyboard, gamepad, or other input device.
  4. Map the control stick, C-stick, D-pad, A/B/X/Y, Start/Pause, L, R, and Z.
  5. Test stick range, triggers, and rumble, then save a profile if your build provides that option.

An Xbox-style controller is a practical choice for many GameCube games. A genuine or compatible GameCube controller is preferable when original ergonomics, analog triggers, or stick notches matter. A keyboard is suitable for testing but is usually poor for analog movement.

For multiplayer, configure the second GameCube port as Standard Controller, and confirm that the game supports a second player. Dolphin explains this issue in its controller FAQ.

Wii games

Wii games can use either an emulated Wii Remote or a real Wii Remote. An emulated Wii Remote maps keyboard or gamepad controls to buttons, pointer movement, shake, tilt, swing, and extensions. A conventional controller can work well for some titles, but it cannot reproduce every Wii Remote feature, accessory, speaker, or orientation input.

A real Wii Remote requires compatible Bluetooth and, for pointer-based games, sensor-bar hardware or an equivalent setup. Motion-heavy and pointer-heavy games may require this hardware for a satisfactory experience. Do not treat an Xbox or PlayStation controller as a complete replacement for a Wii Remote.

Launch Your First Game

  1. Open Dolphin and confirm the game appears in the library.
  2. Double-click the game.
  3. Allow shaders to compile or cache. The first run may pause or stutter briefly.
  4. Check that the title screen appears, input works, audio plays, and emulation speed stays near 100%.
  5. Exit and relaunch once before applying extensive graphics changes.

Temporary shader stutter is common during an initial run. Persistent audio crackling or stuttering usually means the emulator is not maintaining full speed, rather than indicating a separate audio-device problem.

Beginner Graphics Settings

Start with Dolphin’s defaults and native internal resolution. Once the game runs correctly, change one setting at a time:

  • Backend: Try Direct3D first on Windows, especially on AMD hardware. Test Vulkan or OpenGL if performance or compatibility is poor.
  • Internal resolution: Increase it gradually for a sharper image. This raises GPU load.
  • Anti-aliasing: Smooths edges but uses additional GPU resources.
  • Anisotropic filtering: Improves texture clarity at angles and usually has a modest cost.
  • Ubershaders: Can reduce shader-compilation artifacts or improve accuracy but may require substantially more GPU power.
  • Texture packs: Can use considerable VRAM and introduce title-specific problems.
  • Widescreen hacks: May improve presentation but can create incorrect framing or visual glitches.
  • V-Sync: Can reduce tearing but may add input latency.

Software rendering is mainly for debugging, not normal gameplay. Dolphin documents its available video backends and options in its command-line documentation.

There is no universal “best settings” preset. Check the specific game’s Dolphin Wiki page before overriding global settings. Game-specific configuration can protect a title from known graphical or accuracy problems, and changing global graphics options can interfere with those defaults.

Improve Slow or Uneven Performance

  1. Confirm that the game is genuinely below full speed rather than simply displaying a different frame-rate number.
  2. Close demanding background applications, recording tools, and overlays.
  3. Update GPU drivers from AMD, Intel, or NVIDIA.
  4. Plug in a laptop and select a performance-oriented power profile.
  5. Confirm that Dolphin is using the dedicated GPU rather than integrated graphics.
  6. Lower internal resolution.
  7. Try another graphics backend.
  8. Disable expensive enhancements and texture packs.
  9. Check the game’s Dolphin Wiki page.
  10. Test a current development build only if it is relevant to the issue.

Do not arbitrarily change the emulated CPU clock, disable dual-core mode as a universal fix, or install unofficial “FPS boost” builds. Speed hacks can reduce accuracy, and the goal is normally the game’s intended console speed—not an artificially increased frame rate. Dolphin’s laptop-performance FAQ covers dedicated-GPU and power-saving problems.

Save Games and Save States

Use the game’s normal save system as your primary method. GameCube saves are stored through the emulated memory-card system, while Wii saves use emulated Wii system storage.

Save states are snapshots of the emulator’s current state. They are useful for testing or difficult sections, but they can become unreliable after changing Dolphin versions, controllers, settings, or the game state. Keep multiple slots, do not treat save states as backups, and return to an in-game save if a state crashes or behaves incorrectly.

Before upgrading Dolphin or making major configuration changes, back up the emulator’s user directory. Its location can vary depending on whether the build is portable or installed, so use Dolphin’s current user-folder behavior rather than assuming one universal Windows path.

Common Dolphin Problems

Problem What to try
Dolphin will not start Install or repair the official Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.
MSVCP__.dll or vcruntime__.dll is missing Install the current official Visual C++ runtime; never download individual DLLs from an untrusted site.
XINPUT1_3.dll is missing Repair or update the relevant Microsoft DirectX and controller components.
0xc000007b Remove manually installed DLLs and reinstall the correct official runtimes.
Games do not appear Add the actual local folder containing supported dumps, extract archives, and rescan the library.
Controller is detected but does nothing Choose the correct input device and verify the emulated controller type and port.
Second GameCube controller fails Set the second port to Standard Controller and confirm that the game supports multiplayer.
Audio crackles or stutters Reduce graphics load and fix below-full-speed emulation first.
Laptop performs poorly Connect power, select a performance profile, and assign Dolphin to the dedicated GPU.
One game has graphical glitches or crashes Check the game’s Dolphin Wiki page and issue tracker rather than applying global hacks.
Game runs faster than intended Restore the normal emulation-speed limit and undo arbitrary speed settings.
Settings do not persist Move Dolphin to a writable local folder and check for cloud-sync or permission conflicts.

Dolphin’s troubleshooting FAQ covers many of these cases. Use the issue tracker when the Wiki confirms that a problem is known or needs reporting.

How Compatible Is Dolphin?

Dolphin has broad GameCube and Wii compatibility, but it does not run every title perfectly. Individual games may have graphical errors, audio defects, crashes, multiplayer problems, motion-control limitations, or performance issues. A different backend, enhancement, driver, or Dolphin build can change the result.

For a specific title, check the Dolphin Wiki first. It is more reliable than applying a universal graphics preset. The issue tracker can help determine whether a problem is known or fixed in a newer development build.

When Original Hardware Makes More Sense

Original GameCube or Wii hardware remains the simplest choice for authentic controllers, accessories, and motion controls, although it requires the console, physical media, display setup, and maintenance of older hardware. Dolphin is the more flexible option when you want higher resolutions, save-state convenience, controller remapping, or PC-based capture and display.
