How to Use External Game Controllers With Steam Games

Connect your controller, test it in Steam, and choose between default, enabled, or disabled Steam Input for each game. This guide also covers remapping, non-Steam games, Bluetooth problems, duplicate inputs, Joy-Cons, and DualSense features.

Connect the controller to Windows or macOS first, confirm that Steam detects it, then choose the right Steam Input mode for the individual game. Start with Use default settings; switch to Enable Steam Input when the game needs translated or remapped inputs, or to Disable Steam Input when native controller support works better.

1. Connect the controller to your computer

Steam can use controllers connected through USB, Bluetooth, or a controller-specific wireless receiver. Steam Input supports Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch Pro, Steam Controllers, DirectInput gamepads, and many third-party devices. Valve says Steam Input supports more than 300 controllers overall. See Valve’s Steam Input documentation.

Windows Bluetooth

  1. Put the controller into Bluetooth pairing mode.
  2. Select the Network, Sound, or Battery icon near the taskbar clock.
  3. Select Manage Bluetooth devices.
  4. Under New devices, select the controller.
  5. Complete any prompts and select Done.

The exact Settings layout differs between Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the pairing process is broadly the same. Microsoft documents the current process in its Bluetooth pairing guide.

For an Xbox Wireless Controller on Windows 11, use Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Everything else, choose Xbox Wireless Controller, and select Done when pairing finishes.

#1 Best Overall
8Bitdo Ultimate 2C Wireless Controller for Windows PC and Android, with 1000 Hz Polling Rate, Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers, and Remappable L4/R4 Bumpers (Green)
  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

PlayStation DualSense

  1. Turn the controller off. If the player indicator is lit, hold the PS button until it turns off.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable.
  3. Hold Create and PS together until the light bar flashes.
  4. Open the computer’s Bluetooth settings.
  5. Select the controller from the available devices.

Sony officially supports DualSense USB and Bluetooth connections on 64-bit Windows 10, Windows 11, and macOS Big Sur 11.3 or later. Feature support depends on the game and connection type: PC haptic feedback requires USB, adaptive triggers require a supported game, and some controller-specific features work only when the game communicates directly with the controller. Sony’s DualSense PC and Mac support page lists the limitations.

macOS

  1. Put the controller into discovery mode.
  2. Open System Settings.
  3. Select Bluetooth in the sidebar.
  4. Point to the controller in the device list and select Connect.

You can also connect a compatible controller by cable. Apple provides the current steps in its Mac game-controller guide.

2. Check that Steam recognizes it

In the Steam desktop client, open Steam > Settings > Controller. Look for Test Device Inputs and select Begin Test. Press buttons, move the sticks, and test the triggers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Steam does not detect the controller: troubleshoot the USB cable, Bluetooth connection, wireless receiver, operating-system pairing, or device drivers first.
  • Steam detects it but a game does not: check that game’s Steam Input setting, native controller support, Steam Overlay, and any external launcher.

A DirectInput or otherwise unrecognized device may also show Setup Device Inputs. Use it to define buttons and axes when Steam needs help interpreting the controller. Valve explains the testing and setup process in its Steam Input guide for players.

3. Choose global Steam Input support

Open Steam > Settings > Controller > External Gamepad Settings. Depending on the client and connected devices, you may see options such as:

  • Enable Steam Input for Xbox controllers
  • Enable Steam Input for PlayStation controllers
  • Enable Steam Input for Switch Pro controllers
  • Enable Steam Input for generic controllers

Enable the category matching your device when Steam Input is necessary. You generally do not need to enable every category manually: Valve optimized default setup for several common controller families, including Xbox, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch Pro, ROG handheld, and 8BitDo Pro 2 controllers. Use the global controls when the default behavior is not working or when you specifically want Steam Input applied.

How PlayStation controllers behave

PlayStation support is not simply an always-on or always-off choice. Steam’s default behavior can use a game’s native PlayStation controller support when available and fall back to Steam Input when the game lacks it. You can still globally enable or disable PlayStation support in the controller settings. As a result, the same DualShock or DualSense may operate natively in one game and through Steam Input in another. See Valve’s Steam client update notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Set Steam Input for a specific game

Game-specific settings override the general behavior.

  1. Open Library.
  2. Right-click the game.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Select Controller in the left column.
  5. Open the controller override menu.

The available choices are:

Setting Use it when
Use default settings You want Steam to follow the game’s normal controller policy and your global settings. This is the best first choice.
Enable Steam Input The game does not recognize the controller, supports only Xbox/XInput, needs remapping, or lacks native controller support.
Disable Steam Input The game has reliable native support, Steam Input causes duplicate inputs or wrong prompts, or direct access is needed for gyro, haptics, or adaptive triggers.

After changing this option, fully exit and relaunch the game. Some games and launchers do not detect a changed input path until their processes restart.

When to enable Steam Input

Steam Input can translate controller actions into gamepad commands, keyboard keys, mouse movement, or mouse clicks. Enable it when a PlayStation, Switch, DirectInput, or third-party controller is not recognized by a game that expects XInput. It is also useful when you want to remap controls, use a community layout, or play a keyboard-and-mouse-only game with a controller.

Enabling Steam Input does not create native controller support. The game must still accept the translated gamepad, keyboard, or mouse commands, and some anti-cheat systems or launchers may block emulated input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to disable Steam Input

Disable it when the game already supports your controller reliably and Steam Input introduces problems. Native support may be preferable for PlayStation button prompts, gyro, haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, or other controller-specific features. Disabling Steam Input only stops Steam from translating the device; it does not make an unsupported controller compatible.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.

5. Remap buttons and create a layout

Open the game’s Library page and select the controller icon to open its controller configuration. You can inspect the active layout, edit bindings, and browse shared configurations. Steam Input layouts can assign:

  • Controller buttons, sticks, triggers, and axes
  • Keyboard keys
  • Mouse movement and clicks
  • Gamepad commands
  • Gyro and motion controls on supported controllers
  • Mode shifts and context-sensitive commands
  • Menus and multi-command controls

A gamepad-only layout still requires the game to accept gamepad input. If it has no gamepad support, create keyboard-and-mouse bindings instead. Valve’s Steam Input documentation describes the available input sources and actions.

6. Check the game’s controller-support label

Steam’s store and library metadata distinguish between Full Controller Support and Partial Controller Support.

  • Full Controller Support: the game can be downloaded, launched, and played using only a controller.
  • Partial Controller Support: the controller may work during gameplay, but a keyboard or mouse may still be needed for installation, configuration, menus, or other parts of the experience.

These labels describe the game’s supported experience, not a guarantee that every controller model, button layout, vibration feature, or prompt style will work. Steam itself recognizing a controller does not mean every game supports it. See Steam’s controller-support explanation.

7. Use a controller with a non-Steam game

You can use Steam Input with many non-Steam games by adding a shortcut:

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Select Games in the top menu.
  3. Select Add a Non-Steam Game to My Library…
  4. Select the game or application, or browse to its executable file.
  5. Select Add Selected Programs.
  6. Launch the added shortcut from the Steam Library.

Valve also documents an alternative path: Steam > Settings > Library > Add a Non-Steam Game.

  • Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.

This creates a Steam shortcut only. It does not add ownership, install updates through Steam, or turn the game into a Steam license. Steam must be running for Steam Input to work with the shortcut. See Valve’s guides for adding non-Steam games and Steam Controller limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

External-launcher problems

Adding a launcher shortcut may not be enough. Steam Controller functionality can fail when:

  • The launcher or game runs with administrator privileges.
  • The launcher or game blocks the Steam Overlay.
  • Anti-cheat blocks emulated input.
  • The game cannot be added to the Steam Library.
  • You launch the game outside the Steam shortcut.

When another launcher is involved, disable that launcher’s overlay where possible. External overlays such as Ubisoft Connect or Origin can take priority over the Steam Overlay.

8. Fix common controller problems

Steam sees the controller, but the game does not

  1. Go to Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Device Inputs and confirm that the inputs register.
  2. Open the game’s Properties > Controller page.
  3. Change Use default settings to Enable Steam Input.
  4. Relaunch the game from Steam.
  5. If it still fails, try Disable Steam Input, particularly when the game has native controller support.

There is no universally correct setting: the game may require either its native input path or Steam’s translated path.

Duplicate inputs or menus moving twice

This usually means the game can see both the physical controller and a virtual controller. Common causes include Steam Input running alongside native support, DS4Windows or InputMapper running alongside Steam Input, another controller-emulation tool, or multiple controllers assigned to the same player.

Steam works, but the game does not

Test the Steam Overlay by pressing the controller’s guide button or Shift+Tab on the keyboard. If the overlay does not open, Steam Input may not be able to apply the game configuration correctly. Check the game’s overlay and launcher settings before rebuilding the layout.

Wrong button prompts

A PlayStation controller may display Xbox prompts when Steam Input translates it into XInput. That is expected in games that provide only Xbox/XInput glyphs. Disabling Steam Input can restore PlayStation prompts only when the game itself supports those symbols.

Only one controller works in local multiplayer

In games using XInput, Steam Input assigns controller slots according to the order in which devices generate input. Connect all controllers first, then have each player press a button. If the game has its own controller-assignment screen, use that instead. Valve has documented this player-order behavior in its Steam client update notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth disconnects or feels slow

  • Forget the controller and pair it again.
  • Update the controller firmware.
  • Reduce nearby Bluetooth congestion.
  • Try USB to determine whether the issue is wireless rather than Steam Input.
  • Move a wireless receiver away from USB 3.x devices, Wi-Fi access points, capture cards, and other potential interference sources.

Firmware, congestion, signal obstruction, and nearby-device interference can all affect wireless controller stability and latency.

9. Special controller cases

Nintendo Switch Joy-Con pairs

After connecting both Joy-Cons, open Steam > Settings > Controller > External Gamepad Settings and enable Combine Joy-Con Pairs before launching the game. Otherwise, Steam may treat the Joy-Cons as separate controllers.

DirectInput gamepads

Steam Input supports DirectInput devices, but individual gamepads may expose unusual button, axis, or hat-switch mappings. Use Test Device Inputs and, when available, Setup Device Inputs to define the controls.

Gyro, haptics, and adaptive triggers

Steam Input can use motion controls on supported controllers. PlayStation 4 controllers, DualSense controllers, and Steam Controllers have gyro hardware recognized by Steam Input; Xbox controllers do not have gyro support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For DualSense controllers, adaptive triggers require game support, PC haptic feedback requires USB, and the headset jack requires a wired PC or Mac connection. Some game-specific features work only when the game communicates directly with the controller, so disabling Steam Input may be necessary when native support offers the feature you want.

What Steam Input can—and cannot—do

  • You do not normally need to enable every controller checkbox in Steam.
  • Enable Steam Input is not always the right choice; native support can be more reliable.
  • Steam Input supports far more than the Steam Controller, including Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, DirectInput, and third-party devices.
  • A Steam layout does not guarantee controller support. It can translate inputs, but the game must accept the resulting commands.
  • PlayStation controllers do not automatically require DS4Windows. Running it beside Steam Input can create conflicts.
  • Adding a non-Steam game creates a shortcut, not Steam ownership, Steam updates, or guaranteed overlay compatibility.

A reliable setup order

  1. Connect the controller by USB, Bluetooth, or its wireless receiver.
  2. Confirm it works in the operating system.
  3. Check Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Device Inputs.
  4. Leave the game on Use default settings first.
  5. Use Enable Steam Input for unsupported formats, remapping, or keyboard-and-mouse translation.
  6. Use Disable Steam Input for reliable native support or when Steam Input causes conflicts.
  7. Relaunch the game after changing the controller override.
  8. Close other remappers and check the Steam Overlay if problems remain.
