Xbox, PlayStation, and PC players cannot join the same game world or party. However, there is limited compatibility: Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can play together, while Steam and Microsoft PC players can play together across all game modes. PC progress also carries between Steam and the Microsoft PC version when both use the same Bethesda.net account, but it does not carry to Xbox consoles or PlayStation.
Fallout 76 crossplay at a glance
| Platforms | Can they play together? | Do they share progression? |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S | Yes, within the Xbox console family | Yes, as part of the Xbox console environment |
| Steam PC and Microsoft PC | Yes, in all game modes | Yes, with the same Bethesda.net account, with important currency exceptions |
| Xbox console and PC | No | No |
| PlayStation and Xbox | No | No |
| PlayStation and PC | No | No |
| PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 | Full cross-platform support is not available between the major platform ecosystems | Platform-specific under Bethesda’s transfer policy |
These distinctions are why both “Fallout 76 has no crossplay” and “Fallout 76 is fully crossplay” are inaccurate. The game supports multiplayer between certain versions, but not a shared Xbox–PlayStation–PC population. Bethesda lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and supported PC systems as supported platforms.

Who can play Fallout 76 together?
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can play together because they belong to the same Xbox console family. A player on Xbox One can therefore join friends using an Xbox Series X|S console, subject to the normal requirements for online multiplayer and the game itself.

Steam PC and Microsoft PC
Steam and Microsoft PC players can play together in every game mode. The storefront does not determine the multiplayer population here: both players are running the PC version of Fallout 76.
Consequently, a Steam player does not need to buy or launch the same PC storefront as a friend using the Xbox app or another Microsoft PC distribution route. The relevant distinction is PC versus console, not Steam versus Microsoft PC.
Xbox, PlayStation, and PC
There is no full crossplay between Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, and PC. An Xbox player cannot join a PlayStation or PC friend’s game world, and a PlayStation player cannot join an Xbox or PC friend.

Does Fallout 76 have cross-progression?
Fallout 76 has limited cross-progression between Steam PC and Microsoft PC. If both versions use the same Bethesda.net account, characters, gameplay progress, and in-game items are shared between those PC storefronts.
That support is narrower than universal cross-save. Bethesda states that PC progress does not carry over to the Xbox console version, and its transfer policy does not provide a way to move characters or progress between Xbox console, PlayStation, and PC. Linking platform accounts to Bethesda.net is useful for account services, but it does not merge separate characters or transfer a save.
What does not transfer between PC storefronts?
Even between Steam and Microsoft PC, shared progression does not mean that every account balance is pooled. Bethesda says the following are not transferable between those two PC storefronts:

- Bethesda Game Studios, the award-winning creators of Skyrim and Fallout 4, welcome you to Fallout 76, the online prequel where every surviving human is a real person. Work together, or not, to survive. Under the threat of nuclear annihilation, you’ll experience the largest, most dynamic world ever created in the legendary Fallout universe
- Reclamation Day, 2102. Twenty-five years after the bombs fall, you and your fellow Vault Dwellers—chosen from the nation’s best and brightest – emerge into post-nuclear America. Play solo or join together as you explore, quest, build, and triumph against the wasteland’s greatest threats
- Atoms, whether earned or purchased
- Season Tickets
- Fallout 1st membership balance
These balances remain associated with the platform on which they were initially received. Your character and in-game items may appear on both PC versions when the same Bethesda.net account is used, while these currencies or membership-related balances remain storefront-specific.
Can you transfer a Fallout 76 character from Xbox to PC?
No. There is no supported character-transfer process from Xbox console to PC. The same applies in the opposite direction, from PC to Xbox, and across PlayStation and the other platform ecosystems.
Using the same email address or linking the same Bethesda.net account does not change this. Bethesda’s published support guidance says it cannot move characters or gameplay progress between platforms. A character created on Xbox console therefore remains in the Xbox console progression environment, while a PC character remains in the PC environment.

Why does the Xbox PC version not load an Xbox console character?
The Xbox app branding can make this confusing. Fallout 76 launched through the Microsoft Xbox app on Windows is still the PC version. It is not an Xbox console copy with access to the console save.
Because Bethesda does not share progression between PC and Xbox consoles, launching the Microsoft PC version will not load the character created on an Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console. If you switch from Xbox console to PC, you should expect to start or use a separate PC progression environment.

- Identify the device, not just the store name. “Xbox” may refer to an Xbox console or the Xbox app on a Windows PC. These are different Fallout 76 progression environments.
- Use the same Bethesda.net account on both PC versions. Steam and Microsoft PC progress sharing requires the same Bethesda.net account.
- Do not expect account linking to migrate a character. Linking accounts does not merge Xbox, PlayStation, and PC saves.
- Check where your Atoms and other balances were received. Shared PC progression does not make Atoms, Season Tickets, or Fallout 1st membership balance transferable between Steam and Microsoft PC.
- Choose the same platform family as your friends. For multiplayer, Xbox console friends need Xbox consoles, PlayStation friends need PlayStation, and PC friends can use either Steam or Microsoft PC.
Is Fallout 76 crossplay coming?
Bethesda creative director Jon Rush said on February 9, 2026, that the team was investigating crossplay. The comments did not announce that crossplay had been added, identify a specific release, or provide a launch date. The feature was described as not being in the team’s immediate plans.
Best Value
- ATOM PACK — Add 500 Atoms to your Fallout 76 balance.
- IN-GAME CURRENCY — Use Atoms as in-game currency in Fallout 76.
- CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION — Spend Atoms on a variety of customization items for your character.
- ATOMIC SHOP — Visit the in-game Atomic Shop to see what is available.
Production director Bill LaCoste also described the work as involving technical issues around platform destinations, entitlements, account purchases, and currency. Those comments indicate that Bethesda is considering the feature, not that a full crossplay rollout is scheduled. Current reporting is available from Windows Central and GamesRadar+.
There is also no current in-game crossplay switch or console command that enables unsupported platform combinations. Crossplay is a platform and account capability, not a setting players can activate manually.
What to do if progress is missing
If you are moving between Steam and Microsoft PC and a character is missing, first confirm that both installations are signed into the same Bethesda.net account. Different Bethesda.net accounts prevent the PC progress-sharing rule from applying.
If you are trying to load an Xbox console character on PC, or a PC character on Xbox console, the missing character is not a normal synchronization delay: Bethesda does not support progression transfers between those environments. The same limitation applies when moving between Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
For supported PC-to-PC sharing, remember that a visible character or item does not imply that Atoms, Season Tickets, or Fallout 1st membership balance will also appear on the other storefront. Those balances remain tied to the platform where they were received.
Bottom line
Fallout 76 is only partially cross-platform. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S players can play together, and Steam PC and Microsoft PC players can play together in all game modes. Full Xbox–PlayStation–PC crossplay is not available, and characters cannot be transferred between console and PC ecosystems. Steam and Microsoft PC share character progress and in-game items through the same Bethesda.net account, but not Atoms, Season Tickets, or Fallout 1st membership balance.
