Use Instinct to quickly locate targets, spot useful objects, and notice people who may complicate an action. Activate it with your configured control, scan the scene, then return to normal view and make your move using cover, an appropriate disguise, and deliberate interactions. Instinct helps you plan; it does not make an action safe or carry it out for you.
How to use Instinct during a stealth approach
- Activate Instinct using your configured control. The exact key or button depends on your platform and bindings; check the controls settings if the displayed control does not match.
- Locate your target and read the nearby people. Note who is an ordinary bystander, who appears suspicious, and who may have witnessed a crime.
- Look for useful objects and environmental opportunities. Marked items can suggest possible approaches, but the highlight alone does not guarantee that interacting with something is safe.
- Return to normal view and choose a route. Use cover to stay out of sight, consider whether a disguise suits the situation, and avoid drawing attention with unnecessary interactions.
Feral Interactive’s Linux manual describes Instinct as a way to assess a situation and identify “threats, targets, or environmental opportunities.” Its documented indicators are useful for gathering information, not a universal safety rating for people or actions. Read the HITMAN Linux manual.

What the Instinct indicators mean
The following indicator descriptions come from Feral Interactive’s Linux HITMAN manual. Treat them as the documented game context for that manual rather than a guarantee that every version or mode presents every situation identically.

| Red outline | A target | Use it to orient yourself, then plan how to approach without assuming the route is clear. |
| Yellow glow | Interactable items or environmental elements | Consider whether an object could support your plan; a highlight does not itself establish that using it is discreet. |
| White outline | Civilians or other non-threats | Account for their presence when choosing where and how to move. |
| White dot | A suspicious bystander | Pay attention to this person as you assess the scene and decide whether to change your approach. |
| Orange glow | A nearby witness to a crime | Take the witness into account when deciding what to do next; the indicator identifies a risk, not a specific remedy. |
How to turn the scan into a stealth plan
Choose an approach, not just a target
Finding the target is only the start. Look at the people and objects around them, then consider whether you can reach the area unseen, use a suitable disguise, or make use of a marked environmental element. IO Interactive describes HITMAN as supporting varied approaches using stealth techniques, disguises, improvisation, tools, weapons, and environmental elements. Compare the trade-offs before committing

These are planning dimensions, not measured performance ratings. Choose based on the specific scene rather than treating Instinct as an automatic stealth solution.
Controls: check your platform and bindings
Controls are not universal. In the Feral Interactive Linux manual, Control is the default keyboard binding for Instinct, but that should not be assumed for other PC versions, controllers, consoles, or customized layouts. Check the in-game controls settings for your setup.

IO Interactive’s October 6, 2022 update 3.130.0 patch notes describe a controller option for the shared Instinct and Reload button: the setting changes which action is held and which is pressed. The notes also say the keyboard setting affects Instinct while Reload has its own binding. This is dated settings documentation, not a complete current control map for every platform. Read the October 2022 patch notes.

In the context described by the Feral Interactive manual, Elusive Targets are not highlighted on the map or identifiable with Instinct. Do not extend that statement into a claim about every current event or mode: the manual is not an exhaustive reference for all of them. For an Elusive Target, study the briefing and use its clues rather than relying on an Instinct highlight to identify the target.
