To build a Multiverse portal, install and enable Multiverse-Core and Multiverse-Portals, select a three-dimensional region with /mvp wand (or WorldEdit’s //wand), then create the portal with a destination such as w:worldname, e:world:x,y,z, or p:otherportal. Players must also have the required portal and, when enforced, destination-world permissions.

What Multiverse-Portals does
Multiverse-Portals is an add-on for Multiverse-Core on Bukkit-style Minecraft servers. It creates regions that teleport players to Multiverse destinations. A destination can be a complete world, a named portal, an anchor, or an exact coordinate. That makes it possible to connect worlds that vanilla Nether portals would not connect directly.
The portal shape is only a selection region; it is not required to be a vanilla Nether portal. You can build a visible frame from any block material, and the opening can contain ordinary air or other blocks rather than Nether-portal blocks. The documentation also allows an invisible region: create and select the portal while a frame is present, then remove the frame after the portal exists.

Prepare the server before creating a portal
Install the required Multiverse components
Install and enable Multiverse-Core and the Multiverse-Portals add-on on the server. Start or reload the server using your normal administration procedure and verify that both plugins load successfully before selecting any region. Multiverse-Portals depends on Multiverse-Core, so a portal cannot function if the core plugin is missing, disabled, or failing to load.
Because command names and permission behavior can vary between plugin releases, keep the installed version’s in-game help available. Use /mvp help to confirm syntax if a command shown here is rejected. The current basic-usage documentation was updated on 2026-09-28; older command-reference and permissions pages carry 2019-07-27 and 2018-07-09 modification dates, so the current in-game help should take precedence when they disagree.

Construct a frame or other visual marker around the area players should enter. Any block type works. The selected region is three-dimensional, so include the full height and depth through which a player will walk. If you plan to remove the frame, record the selected boundaries first; the portal continues to exist after its blocks are broken.
Create a Multiverse portal step by step
- Stand at the portal area. Finish the frame or mark the invisible region before selecting it.
- Obtain a selection tool. Run
/mvp wand. When WorldEdit is not being used, the built-in wand is a wooden axe by default. If the server already uses WorldEdit, run//wandinstead. - Mark the two opposite corners. Left-click one corner and right-click the opposite corner with the active wand. These points define the cuboid volume, including its height. Inspect the selection before creating anything; an unexpectedly huge volume usually means a stale selection or a mistaken corner.
- Create the portal and destination. Replace
newportalwith the name you want players and permission nodes to use, then run the appropriate command from the table below. - Walk through it as a player. Test from the intended approach direction and confirm that the destination, permissions, and arrival position are correct before announcing the portal.
Destination commands
| Purpose | Command | What it targets |
|---|---|---|
| Send players to a world | /mvp create newportal w:worldname |
The named Multiverse world |
| Send players to exact coordinates | /mvp create newportal e:world:23,43,1 |
The listed world and the exact x, y, z position |
| Send players to another portal | /mvp create newportal p:otherportal |
The destination portal named otherportal |
| Use the current location as a destination | /mvp create {NAME} here |
The location represented by here in the command syntax |
The command reference gives the general form as /mvp create {NAME} [DESTINATION]. The destination prefix identifies the type: w: for a world, e: for an exact position, and p: for another portal. Keep portal names simple and consistent because the name is used in access permissions and later modification commands.
Link two portals after they already exist
You do not have to create both ends at the same time. Select an existing portal with /mvp select portal_a, then change its destination to the other portal:
/mvp modify destination p:portal_b
Repeat the process in the opposite direction if you want a round trip. Select portal_b and set its destination to p:portal_a. A one-way connection can intentionally point only one way, but a pair of portal-to-portal destinations makes the return route explicit and easier to maintain when several worlds are involved.
Recommended Free Tools
If a destination portal does not exist when the first portal is created, create the destination later and apply this modification afterward. This avoids having to delete and recreate the original selection.

Configure permissions so players can travel
By default, only players with multiverse.portal.access.<portalname> can use a portal. Portal names are case-insensitive, but the permission still needs the correct portal name. For a portal called spawn_gate, grant multiverse.portal.access.spawn_gate through your permissions manager.
When world-access enforcement is enabled, the player also needs multiverse.access.<worldname> for the destination world. A player may therefore have permission to enter the physical portal and still be denied travel because the destination world is restricted.
| Permission | Controls | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
multiverse.portal.access.<portalname> |
Use of the named portal | Required by default for portal entry |
multiverse.access.<worldname> |
Access to the destination world | Required when world-access enforcement is enabled |
Open every portal to everyone
If the server is deliberately public and you do not want per-portal access checks, run:

An older permissions page lists /mv conf enforceaccess false for legacy syntax. Confirm which form your installed release supports with /mvp help before applying it. Disabling enforcement changes the access model for all portals, so use it only when unrestricted travel is intended; otherwise grant the specific nodes instead.
Allow boats, minecarts, and mobs to cross
Players are the default travelers. Vehicles and other entities require both global settings and a per-portal setting.
- Enable vehicle teleportation with
/mvp config teleport-vehicles true. - Enable entity teleportation with
/mvp config teleport-entities true. - Select each portal that should accept non-player travelers, then run
/mvp modify <portal-name> teleport-non-players true. - Perform a full server restart after changing the global vehicle or entity settings. The per-portal change alone is not enough.
Apply the per-portal option selectively. A public lobby portal may need to move a boat or minecart, while a narrow staff-only portal may be intended for players on foot.
Modify, inspect, and diagnose an existing portal
Select before modifying
Run /mvp select PORTAL before changing a portal. Where supported, you can pass -p PORTAL to identify the target directly. The command reference lists editable properties including owner, destination, location, price, currency, and safety. Change only the property required for the intended behavior, then test again.

Use debug mode instead of teleporting
Run /mvp debug on while investigating a problem. In debug mode, entering a portal shows its details instead of teleporting, which lets you verify the selected portal, destination, and other settings without repeatedly moving players. Turn it off with /mvp debug off when diagnosis is complete.
Remove a portal safely
Use /mvp remove NAME to delete a portal. Breaking its frame does not delete the portal definition, so rebuilding or removing blocks is not a substitute for this command. Any portals linked to the removed portal will have their links broken, so inspect dependent portals before removal and retarget them if they must continue operating.
Choose the right selection method
| Choice | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
Built-in /mvp wand |
Available as part of the portal workflow; uses the default wooden axe when WorldEdit is not installed | Requires administrators to learn the Multiverse selection controls |
WorldEdit //wand |
Convenient when the server already standardizes on WorldEdit for region selection | Adds a WorldEdit dependency and exposes its permission model to staff |
Use the built-in wand on a minimal Multiverse installation or when you want portal selection permissions isolated from a larger building toolkit. Use WorldEdit when staff already rely on it and its selection workflow is familiar. Whichever tool you choose, verify the cuboid volume before creation.
Choose a destination model
| Destination type | Best fit | Maintenance implication |
|---|---|---|
World destination, w:worldname |
One-way travel to a world’s normal arrival area | Simple to configure; changing the arrival point requires editing the destination location or switching to an exact position |
Exact position, e:world:x,y,z |
A hub, arena entrance, or other fixed arrival coordinate | Precise, but coordinate changes require a portal modification |
Portal destination, p:otherportal |
Explicit paired routes and controlled return travel | Easy to understand as a network, but removing the target breaks linked destinations |
World destinations are usually the least maintenance for a simple one-way gateway. Portal-to-portal destinations are clearer for round trips and for networks where each entrance should return to a specific exit. Exact positions are useful when the world’s default arrival point is not where players should land.
Plan names, permissions, and maintenance before going live
Treat each portal name as an identifier, not merely a sign label. The same name appears in selection commands, modification commands, destination values, and permission nodes. A consistent scheme such as hub_gate, survival_gate, and arena_return makes mistakes less likely than names that differ only by capitalization or punctuation.
Decide whether a route is one-way or two-way before assigning destinations. A world destination is convenient when every traveler should arrive at that world’s standard location. A portal destination is preferable when the return point must be a particular gate. For a larger network, write down each source, target, and required world-access node so removing one gate does not leave unnoticed broken links.
Also distinguish visual construction from portal data. A frame is optional decoration after creation; the cuboid and destination are the functional definition. Removing, rebuilding, or changing the frame does not update the stored region. If the entrance must move, select or modify the portal data rather than assuming new blocks will be detected automatically.

Common setup pitfalls
- Creating before checking the volume: a stale wand selection can include a huge area and make an unintended region usable. Always inspect both corners and the approximate height and depth first.
- Testing only as an operator: administrators often have broad permissions that ordinary players lack. Test with a representative player account to catch missing portal or world-access nodes.
- Changing global entity settings without restarting: the vehicle and entity configuration changes require a full server restart, even when the per-portal setting is already enabled.
- Deleting blocks instead of deleting data: broken frames leave active portal definitions behind. Use
/mvp remove NAMEwhen the gateway itself must disappear. - Removing a target without retargeting sources: linked portals lose their destinations when the target is removed. Update surviving portals before or immediately after the change.
- Copying old command syntax blindly: older documentation may show abbreviated commands. Check
/mvp helpon the installed release whenever syntax or permissions differ.
Troubleshoot the problems administrators see most often
The portal does nothing when a player enters
- Confirm Multiverse-Core and Multiverse-Portals are both enabled.
- Check that the player has
multiverse.portal.access.<portalname>. - If world-access enforcement is active, grant
multiverse.access.<worldname>for the destination. - Verify that the player is entering the selected three-dimensional region, not merely touching the decorative frame.
- Use
/mvp debug onto inspect the portal rather than teleporting.
The destination is wrong
- Select the portal with
/mvp select PORTAL. - Run debug mode and read the stored destination.
- Correct it with
/mvp modify destinationfollowed by the appropriatew:,e:, orp:value.
Players are denied even though portal access was granted
Portal access and world access are separate checks when enforcement is enabled. Confirm both permission nodes and verify the exact world name used in the destination. Since portal names are case-insensitive, capitalization is not usually the cause of a portal-name mismatch, but a typo in the name or world identifier still prevents the intended permission from matching.
The selected area is enormous
Do not create the portal until the volume is correct. A huge selection generally means one corner was not set as intended or an old selection was reused. Re-run the wand selection, left-click one corner, right-click the opposite corner, and inspect the region again.
A portal-to-portal link stopped working
Check whether the target portal was removed. Removing a portal breaks links to it. Create or restore the target, then select the source and set /mvp modify destination p:portal_b again.
Boats, minecarts, or mobs remain behind
Confirm both global settings are enabled, restart the server after changing them, and set teleport-non-players true on that specific portal. Enabling the global options does not automatically opt every portal into non-player travel.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Breaking the frame did not remove the gateway
This is expected. The frame is visual construction; the portal definition is stored separately. Run /mvp remove NAME when the portal itself must be deleted.
A practical two-way setup
For a hub in the main world and a return gate in an adventure world, first select and create the hub portal with a world or exact-position destination. Build and select the adventure-side region, create it with its own name, then convert both destinations to explicit portal links:
- Select the hub portal:
/mvp select hub_gate. - Point it to the adventure gate:
/mvp modify destination p:adventure_gate. - Select the adventure portal:
/mvp select adventure_gate. - Point it back:
/mvp modify destination p:hub_gate. - Test with a player account that has both portal-access nodes and the destination-world access nodes required by the server.
This arrangement keeps the return location explicit. If either portal is later moved or removed, use selection and modification commands to update the surviving link rather than relying on the old frame.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a Multiverse portal to another world?
Install Multiverse-Core and Multiverse-Portals, select the portal region with /mvp wand or WorldEdit’s //wand, then run /mvp create portal_name w:worldname. Grant users the matching portal-access permission and, when enforced, access to the destination world.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What command links two Multiverse portals?
Select the source with /mvp select portal_a, then run /mvp modify destination p:portal_b. Repeat in reverse for a two-way route.
Why can’t players use my Multiverse portal?
Check that both plugins are enabled, the player has multiverse.portal.access.<portalname>, and the destination-world permission multiverse.access.<worldname> is present when world-access enforcement is enabled.
Can I use WorldEdit to select a Multiverse portal?
Yes. Run //wand, left-click one corner, and right-click the opposite corner. The built-in /mvp wand is an alternative when WorldEdit is not installed.
Do Multiverse portals need Nether-portal blocks?
No. The frame can use any block material, and the opening does not need vanilla Nether-portal blocks. The selected region can even become invisible after the frame is removed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill breaking a portal frame delete the portal?
No. Breaking blocks only removes the visual frame. Delete the stored portal with /mvp remove NAME.
Can boats, minecarts, or mobs use a portal?
Yes, but enable teleport-vehicles and teleport-entities, restart the server, and set teleport-non-players true on each portal that should accept them.
How can I inspect a portal without teleporting?
Use /mvp debug on, enter the portal to display its details, then disable debugging with /mvp debug off.
The Bottom Line
Reliable Multiverse portals come from three things: a correctly selected cuboid, an explicit destination, and matching access permissions. Use portal-to-portal links for controlled round trips, exact positions when arrival coordinates matter, and the built-in or WorldEdit wand that best fits your staff workflow. Test with a normal player account, restart after global entity changes, and remove portal data with /mvp remove instead of breaking the frame.
