Subnautica is not multiplayer in its unmodified form. The Steam listing identifies the original game as single-player, and its normal menus do not provide built-in co-op. To play with friends, you need Nitrox, a community multiplayer modification with its own launcher and server workflow.

The original Subnautica is officially presented as a single-player game. Its Steam feature metadata says “Single-player,” and the vanilla game does not include a multiplayer or co-op option in its built-in interface. If you launch the unmodified game, you are using its solo play and save workflow.
Co-op is possible through Nitrox, which describes itself as “Your multiplayer Mod for Subnautica.” Nitrox is a community project rather than a mode supplied by the original game, so it adds its own launcher, server process and connection screens. You do not simply invite a friend from Subnautica’s normal pause menu.

The distinction matters when planning a session. Vanilla Subnautica requires no network setup for solo play. A Nitrox session requires an installation on each player’s computer, a host running the server, and a reachable network path between the host and players.

What you need before installing
Every participant needs the Subnautica installation that Nitrox will use, plus the Nitrox files and launcher. Decide who will host before configuring anything: that person will start the server and provide the address that friends enter. The host also needs a network arrangement that can expose UDP port 11000 to the other players.

- Nitrox files: Download the mod and extract it fully. The launcher should not be run from inside the compressed archive.
- Administrator access: The official setup instructions call for running NitroxLauncher as administrator.
- Subnautica folder: The launcher must be pointed to the folder where your copy of Subnautica is installed. The setup guide includes example locations for Steam and Epic installations; select the actual folder on your computer rather than the launcher’s download directory.
- Host networking: The host must make UDP port 11000 reachable, either with router port forwarding or a VPN-style networking option such as Hamachi.
- Firewall access: If connections are blocked, the official server instructions specifically identify Subnautica.exe and NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe as programs that may need firewall exceptions.
How to install Nitrox
Use the launcher workflow rather than trying to start a multiplayer game from the ordinary Subnautica executable.
- Download Nitrox. Obtain the Nitrox package and save it locally.
- Unzip the package. Extract all of its files to a normal folder. Do not launch Nitrox while it is still inside the compressed archive; the launcher must be able to access its extracted files.
- Run the launcher as administrator. Open NitroxLauncher with administrator privileges, as specified by the official installation guide.
- Open Options. In the launcher, select Options.
- Choose Change. Use the Change control to set the game location.
- Select the Subnautica installation folder. Browse to the folder containing your installed copy of Subnautica. Do not select the Nitrox extraction folder unless that is also the actual game location.
- Confirm the path. Once the launcher points to the correct Subnautica directory, use Nitrox’s multiplayer and server controls from that launcher.
If the launcher cannot find the game, return to Options and use Change again. The key requirement is that the selected directory is the installed Subnautica folder, not a shortcut, archive or download location.

How to host a Nitrox server
The host provides the session that other players connect to. Starting the game alone is not enough; the Nitrox server must be running and reachable while friends join.
- Run NitroxLauncher as administrator. Use the same administrator launch method as during installation.
- Choose Server. In the launcher, open the server control.
- Select Start Server. Nitrox starts its server process and displays server information in the server window.
- Make UDP port 11000 reachable. Nitrox uses UDP port 11000. Configure router port forwarding for that port, or use a VPN-style networking option such as Hamachi when that is the arrangement shared by the players.
- Review firewall permissions. If incoming connections are refused, check firewall exceptions for
Subnautica.exeandNitroxServer-Subnautica.exe, the two executables named in the official server guidance. - Copy the IP shown in the server window. Give that address to each friend who will join. The host needs to keep the Nitrox server running and the network path available for the session.
Port forwarding and a VPN-style option solve the same practical problem—giving clients a route to the host—but they are different network arrangements. Use one approach consistently for the group and make sure the IP you distribute is the address reachable by the joining players.
How a friend joins your server
Joining also happens in Nitrox, not in Subnautica’s standard menu.
- Open NitroxLauncher. The joining player starts the Nitrox launcher.
- Select Multiplayer. Use the launcher’s Multiplayer control.
- Choose Add server IP. This opens the form for a saved server entry.
- Enter a server name and the host IP. Type a recognizable name and the IP supplied by the host.
- Press Add server. Nitrox saves the server entry.
- Select the saved server. Highlight the entry you just created.
- Choose Connect to… Start the connection attempt to the host’s running server.
- Enter a username and choose a color. Nitrox asks the joining player for these session details.
- Press Join. The player enters the Nitrox session if the server and network path are available.
If the server is not listed or the connection fails, verify the address against the IP currently shown in the host’s server window. A saved server entry does not create a server by itself; the host still has to start Nitrox’s server and keep it reachable.

Network setup: UDP 11000, forwarding and firewalls
Nitrox’s official server documentation specifies UDP 11000. That number is the first thing to check when a friend cannot connect. The host’s router or chosen VPN-style network must permit traffic to that UDP port, and the computer’s firewall must not block the relevant executables.
When port forwarding is the right approach
Port forwarding creates an inbound route from the host’s network to the computer running Nitrox. The exact router screens differ by model, so the important Nitrox-specific value is the protocol and port: UDP 11000. The forwarding target must be the host computer running the Nitrox server.
When to use a VPN-style option
A VPN-style option such as Hamachi can provide a shared virtual network path instead of configuring the physical router. Everyone must use the same arrangement, and the host should give friends the address that Nitrox and the selected virtual network make reachable.
Firewall checks
Firewall rules can make a correctly configured port appear closed. The official guidance calls out Subnautica.exe and NitroxServer-Subnautica.exe. If a connection attempt fails, check that both programs are permitted on the network profile being used, then restart the server before testing again.

Troubleshooting a failed co-op connection
The launcher cannot find Subnautica
Run NitroxLauncher as administrator, open Options, select Change, and browse to the actual Subnautica installation folder. Running the launcher from an extracted Nitrox directory does not automatically tell it where the game is installed.
Nitrox was started from the archive
Close the launcher, extract the Nitrox download completely, and run NitroxLauncher from the extracted folder. The official installation procedure explicitly requires unzipping before launch.
The friend cannot connect to the host
- Confirm that the host selected Server and then Start Server.
- Confirm that the host shared the IP displayed in the server window, rather than an old or different address.
- Check that UDP port 11000 is reachable through the chosen port-forwarding or VPN-style setup.
- Check firewall exceptions for
Subnautica.exeandNitroxServer-Subnautica.exe. - Have the friend open Multiplayer, use Add server IP, save the current address and choose Connect to… again.
The server disappears when the host closes the launcher
Nitrox uses a client/server session. The host must keep the Nitrox server running and the network route available while others play. Closing the server process removes the endpoint that friends are connecting to.
The same setup behaves differently after an update
Nitrox’s project repository describes the mod as still being in progressional development. Changes to Subnautica or Nitrox can therefore affect behavior and compatibility. Recheck the current Nitrox installation instructions and confirm that every player is using the same current mod setup before treating a new failure as a router problem.

What to expect from Nitrox
Nitrox is the practical co-op route for the original Subnautica, but it is not a built-in feature with a fixed, official compatibility promise. Its own project status language makes clear that development is ongoing. That means the launcher workflow, server behavior and compatibility can change as the game and mod are updated.
No authoritative player-count statistic, formal uptime guarantee or complete compatibility matrix across every storefront and operating-system version is established here. Plan around the documented requirements instead: an extracted Nitrox installation, a correctly selected Subnautica folder, a host server, reachable UDP port 11000 and the Nitrox join flow.
Can you play Subnautica co-op without mods?
No. The original game’s official feature listing is single-player, and its standard interface does not provide built-in co-op. Playing with friends requires a multiplayer modification such as Nitrox and its separate launcher/server process.
Does the host need to leave a server running?
Yes. Nitrox’s setup uses a host-started server. Friends connect to the IP shown in the server window, so the host must keep that server and its network path available for the session.
Which port does Nitrox use?
Nitrox’s official server documentation specifies UDP port 11000. That is the port to address when configuring forwarding or checking whether the host firewall is blocking connections.
Can a friend join from the normal Subnautica menu?
