To connect a self-hosted n8n instance to an MCP client, expose n8n’s HTTPS MCP endpoint, choose which workflows are available, authenticate the client, and add the endpoint using that client’s HTTP configuration. n8n offers two different designs: instance-level MCP for centrally managed access to several workflows, and the MCP Server Trigger node for a narrowly scoped server inside one workflow.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click n8n, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
What n8n and MCP do together
Model Context Protocol (MCP) gives AI applications a standard way to discover tools and call them. n8n supplies those tools by turning selected automations into MCP-accessible operations. A client can then discover the exposed workflows and invoke them through an HTTPS connection instead of requiring a custom integration for every workflow.

n8n’s built-in MCP server is intended for supported clients such as Claude Desktop and other MCP-compatible applications. On a self-hosted installation, the client connects to the same stable domain that serves the n8n editor, using an endpoint in the form https://<your-n8n-domain>/mcp-server/http.
The endpoint is not a local socket. A remote client must be able to resolve the hostname and reach it over HTTPS. If n8n is available only as http://localhost or on a private network, an external desktop or command-line client cannot connect until you provide suitable network access and TLS.

Choose the right n8n MCP pattern
Decide the scope before enabling anything. The two patterns have different administrative boundaries and are not interchangeable.
| Decision axis | Instance-level MCP | MCP Server Trigger node |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Select workflows across the n8n instance | Tools wired into one workflow |
| Administration | Centralized instance settings and connected-client controls | Workflow-level configuration |
| Reuse | Convenient when several workflows should be discoverable | Useful when one workflow defines a focused MCP behavior |
| Self-hosted controls | Settings UI and environment variables | Node credentials and workflow settings |
Use instance-level MCP when
- You want an administrator to choose and remove exposed workflows from one settings page.
- Several unrelated workflows should be available to one or more clients.
- You need connected-client management at the n8n instance level.
Use the MCP Server Trigger node when
- A single workflow should define the complete tool surface.
- You want the MCP behavior and its credentials to travel with that workflow.
- Exposing any other workflow from the instance would create unnecessary risk or complexity.
Instance-level MCP is broader and centrally managed; the trigger-node design is narrower and workflow-specific. Treat that difference as an access-control decision, not merely a preference about configuration screens.
Self-hosted prerequisites
Prepare these items before opening the MCP settings page:
- A running self-hosted n8n instance that the intended MCP client can reach.
- A stable DNS name for the n8n editor and MCP endpoint.
- HTTPS with a certificate trusted by the client. Do not use a local-only hostname for a client running elsewhere.
- Instance owner or administrator permissions to change instance-level MCP settings.
- A list of the workflows that may be called by an AI client, including any workflow that can write data, send messages, spend money, or change infrastructure.
- A decision about OAuth versus token authentication. OAuth is the preferred route when the client supports n8n’s documented flow.
A self-hosted VPS or another managed Docker host can provide the public HTTPS reachability required here, but the hosting choice does not replace n8n’s own authentication and workflow permissions.
Set up instance-level MCP step by step
1. Confirm the public base URL
Open the n8n editor through the same HTTPS domain you intend to give to the client. The documented self-hosted pattern is:
https://<your-n8n-domain>/mcp-server/http
Replace only the domain placeholder. Keep the /mcp-server/http path exactly as shown. If a reverse proxy fronts n8n, make sure it forwards this path and preserves the HTTPS connection expected by the client.

- Sign in to n8n with an instance owner or administrator account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Instance-level MCP.
- Choose Enable MCP access.
The page then shows connection details, access controls, and connected-client management. The exact arrangement is version-sensitive: n8n documents the newer connection-details layout and per-client setup from version 2.33.0 onward, while older releases may show a simpler MCP settings screen. If a label in this guide is missing, check the installed n8n version before changing your deployment.

3. Select only the workflows that should be tools
Use the instance-level access controls to expose the intended workflows. Start with read-only operations whenever possible. A workflow that can update a database, modify a game build, publish content, or call an external service should be treated as a privileged tool, even if the workflow itself is short.
Give each exposed workflow a clear name and description. The client will use the discovered tool metadata to decide when a call is appropriate, so vague names such as “Webhook 1” make accidental calls more likely. Keep unapproved workflows out of the MCP selection rather than relying on the model to ignore them.
4. Copy the server URL
In Connect a client, copy the server URL supplied by n8n. For a self-hosted instance it should follow the pattern below:
https://<your-n8n-domain>/mcp-server/http
Do not substitute an internal container name, Docker service name, or localhost unless the MCP client runs in the same network namespace and can resolve it. Most desktop and CLI clients need the publicly resolvable HTTPS address.
5. Configure authentication
Choose OAuth when the client supports n8n’s documented OAuth flow. OAuth keeps the authorization exchange separate from the command line or project file and makes revocation easier to manage.
For token authentication, generate the n8n MCP token and send it in the HTTP authorization header:
Authorization: Bearer <YOUR_N8N_MCP_TOKEN>
The token is a credential. Do not paste it into workflow descriptions, screenshots, issue trackers, source repositories, or shared chat transcripts. Store it in the client’s secret-management facility or an environment variable where the client supports one. If it is exposed, revoke it and issue a replacement rather than trying to conceal the leak.

Add n8n to common MCP clients
Each client uses the same server URL but has its own configuration syntax. Replace <your-n8n-domain> in every example with the domain serving your self-hosted n8n editor.
Claude Code
Run the documented command with the HTTP transport:
claude mcp add --transport http n8n https://<your-n8n-domain>/mcp-server/http
If your setup requires a bearer token, add it using the credential or header mechanism supported by your installed Claude Code version; never place a real token in a shell history that other users can read.
Codex CLI
Register the URL as an MCP server:
codex mcp add n8n --url "https://<your-n8n-domain>/mcp-server/http"
Complete authentication using the CLI’s documented credential flow. The URL is the endpoint, not the n8n editor home page.

Keep the file free of long-lived secrets when it is part of a shared workspace. Configure authentication through the client’s supported secure settings.
Other clients
Gemini CLI and other MCP-compatible applications likewise need the HTTPS URL and an authentication method. Their configuration keys differ, but the value remains the n8n MCP endpoint copied from Connect a client. Prefer the client’s streamable-HTTP or HTTP transport option when it offers both legacy and current choices.
Validate the connection without creating side effects
Documentation defines the endpoint and permissions, but there is no universal performance benchmark or one-size-fits-all test procedure. Use these operator checks in order:
- Confirm the client accepts the endpoint without a DNS, certificate, or transport error.
- Check that the client can discover the deliberately exposed read-only workflow.
- Inspect the discovered tool name, description, input fields, and required values.
- Call the workflow with a harmless test input that cannot alter production data.
- Compare the returned output with the workflow’s expected output contract.
- Only after those checks pass, expose or call workflows that perform controlled writes.
If discovery works but a call fails, inspect the n8n execution log and the client’s MCP error details separately. A successful TLS connection proves only that the endpoint is reachable; it does not prove that the workflow is selected, the token is valid, or the supplied input matches the workflow’s schema.
Secure a self-hosted n8n MCP endpoint
Require HTTPS and a stable hostname
Terminate TLS at the reverse proxy or at n8n according to your deployment design, and renew the certificate before it expires. A stable hostname prevents every client configuration from breaking when an IP address changes. Do not downgrade to plain HTTP to work around a certificate problem.
Minimize the exposed tool surface
Expose only workflows that are intentionally designed for model-driven calls. Separate read-only and mutating operations where possible. For a mutating workflow, add its own validation, authorization checks, idempotency protections, and confirmation logic; MCP access does not make a workflow safe by itself.
Protect OAuth credentials and bearer tokens
OAuth is the recommended path in n8n’s examples when the client supports it. If you use a bearer token, treat it like a password, limit who can read it, and rotate it after staff changes or suspected exposure. Avoid embedding credentials in JSON files that are committed to source control.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Review connected clients
Instance-level MCP provides connected-client controls in the settings interface. Remove clients that are no longer used and review the workflow selection whenever a client is added. A client that remains authorized can continue to discover whatever workflows are exposed to it.
Disable MCP at the installation level when required
For a self-hosted installation that must remove MCP entirely, n8n documents the environment variable:
N8N_DISABLED_MODULES=mcp
Setting this disables MCP endpoints and removes the related UI. Apply the variable through the environment-management method used by your deployment, then restart n8n and verify that the MCP settings and endpoint are no longer available. This is an installation-wide control, not a way to hide one workflow from one client.
When to use the MCP Server Trigger node instead
The MCP Server Trigger node creates an MCP server inside one workflow. Rather than selecting multiple workflows from an instance-level page, you wire the tools and logic for that server into the workflow itself. This is useful when the workflow is a deliberate API boundary and no other automation should be discoverable.
Design the workflow boundary
- Put only the intended tool logic behind the trigger.
- Define explicit inputs and outputs so a client cannot pass arbitrary values into unrelated nodes.
- Use workflow credentials and permissions appropriate to the operations performed.
- Keep dangerous actions behind validation and, where appropriate, a human approval step.
Choose it for isolation, not convenience alone
The trigger-node approach reduces the number of workflows visible through that server, but it does not eliminate the need for HTTPS, authentication, input validation, or secret handling. Its controls live at the workflow and node level rather than in the instance-level MCP administration screen.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The client cannot resolve the server | Local hostname, incorrect DNS, or blocked network path | Open the editor domain from the client machine and verify that the hostname resolves to the reachable HTTPS service. |
| TLS or certificate error | Expired, self-signed, or mismatched certificate | Use a certificate trusted by the client and ensure its hostname matches the n8n domain. |
404 on /mcp-server/http |
MCP is disabled, the path is not forwarded by the proxy, or the n8n version exposes different UI options | Check Settings > Instance-level MCP, reverse-proxy routing, and the installed n8n version. |
| Authentication fails | Wrong OAuth account, expired authorization, malformed bearer header, or revoked token | Reauthorize through the client’s OAuth flow or issue a new token and send exactly Authorization: Bearer .... |
| No tools are discovered | No workflow is selected, the client is using the wrong transport, or the connected account lacks access | Review the instance-level workflow selection and client transport configuration. |
| A tool is discovered but execution is rejected | Input does not match the workflow contract or the workflow’s credentials cannot perform the operation | Inspect the declared fields, n8n execution details, and the credentials used by the workflow. |
| The settings page is missing | Insufficient permissions, an older n8n layout, or MCP disabled with an environment variable | Sign in as owner or administrator, confirm the n8n version, and inspect N8N_DISABLED_MODULES. |
Operational checklist
- Use a stable HTTPS domain that the client can reach.
- Enable instance-level MCP only with owner or administrator permissions.
- Select the smallest practical set of workflows.
- Prefer OAuth; otherwise store the bearer token as a secret.
- Start validation with a read-only workflow and harmless input.
- Log and review executions for tools that can change data or call external services.
- Remove unused connected clients and rotate credentials after exposure.
- Use
N8N_DISABLED_MODULES=mcpwhen MCP must be removed from the self-hosted installation.
Which setup should you choose?
Choose instance-level MCP when an administrator needs one place to manage several reusable n8n workflows and connected clients. Choose the MCP Server Trigger node when one workflow should define a tightly bounded tool server. In either case, the practical connection is the same: a reachable HTTPS endpoint, explicit authentication, deliberately selected tools, and a client configuration that points to /mcp-server/http. Treat workflow selection and token custody as security controls, not as setup details to postpone.
