Use Paint when you want to restore or create something in Wasteland; use Thinner when you want to alter the environment or look for a hidden route or secret. The choice is deliberately consequential. Official descriptions for Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed say that Paint restores beauty and harmony, while Thinner changes the environment and can uncover hidden secrets. The same descriptions explain that your choices influence the story and contribute to multiple endings.
The game does not reduce every encounter to a universal “correct” spray. Look at what the target, puzzle or route is asking you to accomplish, select the material that matches that goal, and observe the result before committing to a longer action. Because official product pages do not publish a complete list of object reactions, resource rules or default button mappings for Rebrushed, use the live control settings and the feedback on screen rather than relying on instructions written for an older game.

Paint and Thinner at a glance
| Tool | Primary purpose | When it is the sensible first choice | What is officially established |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paint | Restores or creates elements in the world | You want to repair, rebuild, preserve or bring back a feature | PlayStation, Nintendo and other official descriptions present Paint as the restorative or creative option |
| Thinner | Alters the environment and may expose hidden secrets | You are probing for an alternate path, removing an obstruction or investigating suspicious scenery | Official descriptions say Thinner alters the environment and can uncover hidden secrets |
| Either, depending on the situation | Shapes a consequential choice | The same scene offers a safe-looking solution and a more destructive or exploratory one | Official listings state that choices affect the story and that the game has multiple endings |
These are purposes, not guarantees that every object responds in one fixed way. A product page can establish the design intent without documenting the behavior of every wall, platform, character or puzzle. Treat the table as your decision rule, then let the particular scene confirm whether your choice worked.
What Paint does
Restoring damaged or incomplete scenery
Paint is the option for bringing a world element back toward a complete, harmonious state. When a bridge, platform, decoration or other piece of scenery appears damaged, faded or absent, Paint is the logical material to try first. The official wording describes it as restoring beauty and harmony and as creating or restoring parts of the world.

That description does not promise that every painted surface becomes a permanent platform or that every missing object reappears. The exact result belongs to the individual encounter. Aim at the relevant object, apply Paint according to the control prompt shown by your platform, and check whether the environment has visibly changed before moving on.
Creating a route or interaction
Some situations are about making something exist rather than removing something. Paint can serve that creative role: it may complete a visual element, restore a usable section of scenery or make an intended interaction possible. If a route looks as though it was designed to be repaired, filled in or reconstructed, Paint aligns with the game’s stated purpose.
Do not assume that Paint is always the benevolent or optimal answer. A restored element can close off an alternate line of investigation, and the game advertises choices that influence the story. If you are pursuing a particular narrative result, record your decision and consider a separate save before experimenting.

What Thinner does
Changing the environment
Thinner is the alteration tool. The official product descriptions specifically connect it with changing the environment rather than restoring it. In practical terms, use it when you want to test whether a visual barrier, surface or structure is concealing something or can be changed to open a different possibility.
“Alter” is intentionally broader than “destroy.” The official material does not establish that a named object always disappears, how long an effect lasts, or whether every target can be affected. Watch the target and the surrounding geometry after applying Thinner; a successful change may be subtle, temporary or useful only from a new position.

Searching for hidden secrets
Thinner can uncover hidden secrets, making it the natural investigative choice when scenery looks suspiciously solid, layered or out of place. Search methodically instead of spraying every surface. Examine the scene for unusual seams, blocked recesses, inaccessible-looking ledges and visual elements that contrast with their surroundings. Apply a controlled amount, look for a newly visible opening or object, and then reassess the route.
A hidden discovery is not the same as a guaranteed reward or a required objective. If thinning a surface creates an unsafe drop or removes a convenient landmark, pause and decide whether exploration is worth the trade-off in that encounter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Define the goal. Decide whether you are trying to repair a route, create a missing element, alter a barrier, or investigate for something concealed.
- Inspect the target. Look at the object and the space around it. Damage, incompleteness and a restoration theme point toward Paint; suspicious blockage or a possible concealed recess points toward Thinner.
- Check the current control prompt. Rebrushed’s official pages do not provide a complete universal button list. Use the controls or bindings screen for your platform and input device before acting.
- Apply a short test. Use the smallest practical action first. This lets you confirm the target’s reaction without assuming that a mechanic documented for another title also applies here.
- Read the result. Look for a repaired or created element after Paint, or an environmental change or newly exposed area after Thinner.
- Decide whether to continue. If the result is not useful, reposition and inspect the target again. Do not repeatedly hold the input merely because the first attempt produced no obvious change.
- Protect a consequential choice. When the scene appears tied to a character, objective or route, make a separate save if the game permits it. Official listings describe a broader choice system with multiple endings, not a single spray that guarantees one ending.
Controls: find the correct buttons on your platform
Exact Rebrushed mappings are not established by the official pages used for this guide, and a button assignment can differ between a controller, keyboard and the platform’s accessibility layout. Do not copy a trigger combination from an Epic Mickey 2 manual and assume it applies here.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4
The official PlayStation listing confirms PS5 and PS4 versions and lists controller remapping among the accessibility features. Open the game’s settings from the title screen or pause menu, choose the controls or controller section, and identify the commands labeled for Paint and Thinner. If you remap them, write down the new positions or restore the default layout before switching devices so that an old binding does not confuse your next session.
Nintendo Switch
The official Nintendo store listing confirms a Switch edition. Open the in-game options and inspect the controls for the controller style you are using, such as Joy-Con or a paired gamepad. The labels shown in Rebrushed are more reliable than a generic control chart because they reflect your current input configuration.

The official Steam listing identifies the PC version. Check the keyboard-and-mouse bindings and any controller profile before entering a puzzle. If a key appears to do nothing, verify that the game window has focus, that the action is bound, and that you are aiming at an eligible target rather than an unrelated part of the scene.

How to test Paint or Thinner safely
Use a controlled area first
When learning the tools, test them in an open section with a visible object and a nearby safe place to stand. Keep the camera steady, target one surface, and apply a brief action. The purpose is to learn the feedback of the current encounter, not to empty a resource bar or alter an important story location before you understand the result.
Change one variable at a time
If the target does not react, do not immediately switch materials, camera angle and position all at once. Move closer while keeping the same material, then adjust the aim, and finally try the other material if the scene still suggests it. This makes it easier to tell whether the issue is targeting, distance, an ineligible object or an intentional puzzle condition.
Confirm the world state
After an apparent success, walk around the changed area. A restored or altered object may affect a jump, a line of sight or a passage that is not visible from your original position. Check for environmental movement, a newly reachable ledge, a revealed recess or a changed character interaction before assuming that nothing happened.
Paint versus Thinner: a decision framework
| Your immediate objective | Start with | Reason | Check after use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repair or complete a damaged feature | Paint | It is the restorative and creative choice | Whether the feature is usable or visually restored |
| Make a missing part of the world appear | Paint | Official descriptions connect Paint with creating or restoring elements | Whether a route or interaction has become available |
| Investigate a suspicious barrier or surface | Thinner | It alters the environment and can reveal hidden secrets | Whether a recess, path or object has been exposed |
| Preserve a structure while you explore | Paint first | Restoration better matches a preservation goal than alteration | Whether the restored state blocks an alternate approach |
| Choose between visibly different outcomes | Pause and assess | The broader choice system can affect the story and endings | The scene, objective and later consequences rather than one immediate animation |
Story consequences and multiple endings
Official listings describe choices that influence the story and say the game has multiple endings. That makes Paint and Thinner more than interchangeable visual effects. The evidence does not publish a decision-by-decision chart, a percentage of influence or a rule saying that one use always locks a specific ending.

Use a simple record if you want to understand your own route: note the location, the object, the material selected and the visible result. Keep a save before a major choice when possible. This lets you compare outcomes in your own playthrough without treating an unverified online checklist as authoritative.
A single action should not be described as guaranteeing an ending. Endings are presented as the result of choices across the game, so interpret a Paint or Thinner decision as one contribution to a larger path.

Using the wrong material for the goal
If you are trying to repair a route but repeatedly use Thinner, you are pursuing the opposite design purpose. Re-evaluate the objective and test Paint on the damaged or incomplete element. If you are searching for a concealed passage, repeated Paint applications may preserve a surface that needs to be altered instead.
Assuming every object is interactive
Official descriptions explain the tools at a high level, not an exhaustive list of eligible targets. A surface that looks paintable may be decorative, out of range or part of a later puzzle. Move to a clear angle, check for a prompt and test nearby intended-looking elements before concluding that the mechanic is broken.
Holding the input without watching feedback
A long application can make it difficult to tell what changed and may create an unwanted state. Begin with a short test, release the input, inspect the scene and continue only when the result supports your plan.

Copying Epic Mickey 2 instructions
A manual for Epic Mickey 2 describes Paint as filling objects and befriending characters and Thinner as erasing objects and battling enemies, along with short sprays, held streams and specific trigger mappings. Those instructions belong to that earlier game. They are not verified control or behavior documentation for Rebrushed, so they should not be used as a button guide for this title.
Expecting a published resource number
The official product materials do not state exact Paint or Thinner quantities, durations, ranges or regeneration rules. If your game displays a meter, use the meter shown in your current session; do not substitute a number from another edition, video or manual.
Troubleshooting when nothing seems to happen
- Verify the binding. Reopen the controls menu and confirm which button or key is assigned to each material. Check whether a remapped controller profile is active.
- Improve the aim. Move closer, center the reticle or camera on the intended object, and try a slightly different angle.
- Look for an interaction state. Some targets may require you to stand in a particular location, approach from one side or complete another objective first.
- Use the goal as a diagnostic. If the goal is restoration, test Paint on the damaged element; if it is discovery, test Thinner on an unusual barrier. A mismatch between goal and material is more likely than a universal failure.
- Inspect the surroundings. A successful change may be visible behind, above or below the point you sprayed. Circle the area before repeating the action.
- Reload only after recording the choice. If the scene appears consequential, note what you did and reload a prior save only when you are sure you want to compare states.
What the official product information confirms
PlayStation’s product page describes using Paint to restore beauty and harmony and Thinner to alter the environment and uncover hidden secrets. It identifies PS5 and PS4 editions, gives the game’s September 24, 2024 release date and lists controller-remapping support among accessibility features.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Nintendo’s official store page presents the same broad Paint-and-Thinner distinction for the Switch edition. Steam’s official listing describes Rebrushed as a 3D platformer set in Wasteland, identifies Purple Lamp and THQ Nordic, and states that choices influence the story and lead to multiple endings.
Those pages establish the tools’ roles and the existence of consequential choices. They do not establish default buttons, exact target-by-target outcomes, spray range, effect duration, resource costs or a complete ending formula. For those details, the in-game settings and the feedback from the particular encounter are the appropriate authorities.
Quick checklist before you commit to a choice
- What am I trying to do: restore, create, alter or investigate?
- Does the target look damaged and incomplete, or suspiciously blocked?
- Have I checked the current Paint and Thinner bindings for my device?
- Can I test briefly from a safe position?
- Did the surrounding environment change in a way I can verify?
- Could this decision affect a character, route or story outcome?
- Should I make a separate save before choosing?
In short, Paint is Rebrushed’s restoration and creation tool, while Thinner is its environmental alteration and secret-finding tool. Match the material to your immediate objective, confirm the result in the scene, and treat major choices as part of the game’s wider multiple-ending system rather than as isolated guarantees.
