Yes. Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) for PlayStation 5. However, Rockstar and PlayStation have not published a confirmed PS5 download size, install size, or minimum free-space requirement in the listings checked through October 13, 2026. Do not treat a number from rumor posts as official.
What is confirmed about GTA 6 on PS5
Grand Theft Auto VI is a PS5 game according to Rockstar’s platform information and the Rockstar Store product listing. Rockstar’s support information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms covered by its current listing. There is no indication in those listings that the PS5 version is limited to a later release or a cloud-streaming edition.

The Rockstar Store currently gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and November 12, 2026 as the start of pre-loading. Those dates were still in the future when the listings were checked on October 13, 2026, and a publisher can change a date before launch. Treat the store page as the place to verify the schedule when pre-loading is close.

That describes the intended performance benefit; it does not disclose how many gigabytes the installation requires.

How much PS5 storage will GTA 6 require?
No official figure has been published in the Rockstar Store, PlayStation Store, Rockstar support material, or PlayStation storage guidance reviewed for this answer. That means there is currently no confirmed number for the download, the installed game, or the amount of free space the console will demand before installation.
Those terms are related but not identical. A download package can be compressed, while the installed game may occupy a different amount of space after it is unpacked. A console can also require temporary working room while it downloads, verifies, and installs an update. Unless Rockstar states a specific requirement and explains what the number represents, converting a rumor into a “safe” target would be guesswork.
Searches for “How many GB is GTA 6 on PS5?” often produce screenshots, social-media claims, or estimates based on the size of other large games. None of those establishes the requirement for Grand Theft Auto VI. The only defensible answer today is that the capacity has not been officially quantified in the current listings.

The most useful time to check is immediately before pre-loading begins. Rockstar’s currently listed pre-load date is November 12, 2026. Reopen the Rockstar Store or PlayStation Store listing at that point and read the installation information shown for the PS5 edition. If Rockstar publishes separate download and free-space figures, keep the wording attached to each figure; do not report one as the other.

PS5 storage choices for GTA 6
PlayStation’s storage guidance describes three relevant locations. They do not serve the same purpose, and only two are intended to be directly usable for playing a PS5 game.
| Storage location | What the official guidance supports | Can a PS5 game run directly from it? | How it fits a GTA 6 plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 console storage | PS5 games and saved data can be stored on the console’s built-in storage. | Yes | The normal installation location. |
| USB extended storage | PS5 game data can be stored on a USB extended-storage drive, but PlayStation says the data must be moved back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to play. | No | Useful for archiving or transferring data, not for launching the PS5 version directly. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | PlayStation supports a commercially available, compatible M.2 SSD for storing games and apps. | Yes, when the drive is installed and meets PlayStation’s current requirements. | An optional way to add directly usable game storage. |
PS5 console storage
The built-in console storage is the straightforward destination for GTA 6. When Rockstar provides the final requirement, compare it with the free space shown on the PS5 itself rather than with the console’s advertised capacity. The amount available to install a new game is the amount remaining after the system software, existing games, captures, and other data have taken their share.
Because no GTA 6 figure is official yet, there is no evidence-based threshold to tell every player to clear today. You can still inspect the Storage screen on the console, identify games you no longer use, and decide whether those titles should remain installed. The decision is practical housekeeping, not proof of a particular GTA 6 requirement.
USB extended storage
A USB drive can hold PS5 game data, but it is not a direct-play expansion for the PS5 version. PlayStation’s rule is explicit: to play a PS5 game stored on USB extended storage, move the game data back to the PS5’s console storage or to an installed M.2 SSD first.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

That makes USB storage useful when you want to archive a large game without deleting it permanently, or when you need a place to move less frequently played titles while making room for a new installation. It also means a USB drive does not solve a last-minute launch problem by itself. If GTA 6 is on USB on release day, the transfer back to playable storage must happen before you can start the game.
Do not describe USB extended storage as a way to run GTA 6 directly. The distinction matters even if the drive has ample capacity: storage space and the PS5’s ability to execute the game from that location are separate questions.
Compatible M.2 SSD storage
PlayStation supports adding a commercially available M.2 SSD for game and application data. An M.2 drive is therefore the optional expansion route for players who want more storage that remains directly usable for PS5 games, provided the drive is compatible with the current PS5 specifications and is installed correctly.
The word “compatible” is important. PlayStation’s support guidance sets requirements for the type of M.2 drive that can be used. Check the current Sony specifications immediately before buying, because a drive’s physical format, interface, performance characteristics, and cooling arrangement all have to match the console’s requirements. This article does not establish a particular model or price, and GTA 6’s unknown size is not evidence that anyone must purchase an expansion drive.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
If you already have a compliant M.2 SSD with sufficient free space, it can be the destination for the installation instead of the built-in storage. If you do not have one, wait for Rockstar’s confirmed capacity and then decide whether deleting or archiving existing games is preferable to buying additional hardware.
What to do before pre-loading
- Verify the schedule. Near November 12, 2026, open the current Rockstar Store or PlayStation Store listing and confirm that the pre-load and release dates have not changed.
- Read the PS5 installation details. Look for an official download-size or required-free-space figure attached specifically to the PS5 edition. Record the wording exactly enough to distinguish download data from installed data.
- Check usable space. On the PS5 Storage screen, compare the console’s available space with the newly published requirement. If you use an M.2 SSD, check its available space as well.
- Choose what to move. Send seldom-played PS5 games to USB extended storage if you want to keep them, remembering that they must be moved back before playing. Alternatively, remove games you can redownload later.
- Use an M.2 SSD only if it is compliant. Confirm the drive against PlayStation’s current compatibility requirements before installation. A generic M.2 label alone is not enough.
- Leave room for the installation process. Use the free-space figure shown by Rockstar or PlayStation rather than inventing a buffer from rumors. If the listing gives separate installation instructions, follow those instructions as written.
This sequence avoids the two common mistakes: preparing around an unverified rumor and assuming that a USB archive drive can launch a PS5 game without a transfer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the SSD statement does not reveal the game’s size
PlayStation’s description of near-instant load times refers to how GTA 6 uses the PS5’s ultra-high-speed SSD during play. A storage device can be fast enough to stream game data efficiently without the publisher disclosing the total amount of data installed on it. Performance language therefore cannot be converted into a capacity estimate.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLikewise, the fact that GTA 6 is expected to be a large, detailed open-world game does not establish a number. Other games, leaked screenshots, download timers, and estimated hardware requirements measure different things under different conditions. None replaces a capacity figure published for this PS5 release.

Will GTA 6 require an M.2 SSD?
There is no evidence in the current official material that GTA 6 requires a separately purchased M.2 SSD. The built-in PS5 storage is the standard installation location, and PlayStation presents an M.2 SSD as an optional way to expand game and app storage.
An expansion drive becomes relevant if the final requirement exceeds the free space you want to maintain on the console, or if you keep enough games installed that deleting and redownloading them is inconvenient. It is a capacity-management choice, not a stated launch requirement for GTA 6.
When will the answer become definite?
The unresolved fact is the final PS5 storage requirement. The listings checked on October 13, 2026 supplied the platform and schedule but no capacity number. Rockstar may add that information before pre-loading, in the store metadata, or as part of the download process. Check the official listing again around November 12 rather than relying on an older article or a social-media post.
The release date currently shown is November 19, 2026. Since both the pre-load and launch dates are publisher-provided schedule entries, they remain subject to change until Rockstar confirms them again. The platform listing, the storage requirement, and the date are separate facts; an update to one does not automatically confirm the others.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Quoting a rumor as a requirement: no official PS5 size is established in the reviewed listings.
- Confusing download size with free space: those values can describe different stages of installation.
- Planning to play from USB: PS5 game data must be moved to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before play.
- Buying an expansion drive prematurely: GTA 6 has not been shown to require one, and its capacity is still unknown.
- Assuming the schedule is permanent: recheck the Rockstar listing near pre-load and launch.
Bottom line for PS5 owners
GTA 6 is listed for PS5, with November 19, 2026 currently shown as the release date and November 12 as the pre-load date. The official listings checked through October 13 do not state how much storage the PS5 version needs. Prepare by checking your available console or compatible M.2 storage, use USB only as an archive or transfer location, and wait for Rockstar’s own capacity figure before treating any number as fact.
