Query Monitor finds what is slowing a WordPress request by showing the SQL, PHP, hooks, templates, assets, and HTTP calls generated during that exact request. Reproduce the slow page, dashboard screen, AJAX action, REST endpoint, or redirect while logged in, open the Query Monitor toolbar panel, and work from Timeline to the component-level panels. Treat every plugin or theme name as an investigation lead, not proof of fault.

This workflow is suitable for a video-game site with dynamic archives, embeds, search, user accounts, and editorial tools. Use a staging copy whenever possible, limit access to trusted users, and remove verbose debugging when the investigation ends.

What Query Monitor can and cannot tell you

Query Monitor profiles the current WordPress request. It does not provide a historical database of earlier page loads. If an article page took 12 seconds five minutes ago, that information is not available after the request has finished; reload the same URL or repeat the same action while the problem is present.

For each captured request, the toolbar summary reports four values in order:

  1. Page-generation time in seconds.
  2. Peak memory usage.
  3. Total time spent in SQL queries.
  4. Total number of SQL queries.

The panels then add context: which component called a query, whether queries are slow, duplicated or erroneous, what remote HTTP requests returned, which PHP warnings occurred, and how WordPress selected hooks, templates, blocks, scripts and styles. A report describes what ran; it does not rewrite a query, prove that one component is the sole root cause, or measure every browser-side delay.

Requirements and current compatibility

The WordPress.org listing captured on 20 June 2026 records Query Monitor 4.0.7, more than 200,000 active installations, WordPress 6.2 or later, and PHP 7.4 or later. The listing reported testing through WordPress 7.0.7 at that time. These values can change, so check the plugin listing before installing on a production site.

Requirement or condition What to verify Why it matters
WordPress 6.2 or newer for the captured 4.0.7 release Older cores may be unsupported.
PHP 7.4 or newer for the captured release Check the PHP version used by the web process, not only the command-line binary.
Access Administrator on single-site, or Super Admin on multisite by default The toolbar and panels are capability-restricted.
Environment Prefer local or staging for verbose debugging Debug collection can expose request data and adds processing and memory overhead.

Query Monitor is free and open source. It can be installed and updated from WordPress.org, from its GitHub project, or through Composer. Use the distribution method that matches your deployment process, then activate it from Plugins.

Install it and capture the right request

Install and activate

  1. Make a current backup and, if available, clone the site to staging.
  2. In WordPress, open Plugins → Add New, search for Query Monitor, install the plugin published under that name, and select Activate. A deployment team can instead install the package from GitHub or Composer.
  3. Sign in as an Administrator on a single-site installation. On multisite, use a Super Admin account unless a deliberately granted capability allows another account.
  4. Open the URL or admin screen that exhibits the problem. Query Monitor adds a menu to the admin toolbar; the captured data belongs to that request.

Record the reproduction conditions

Before interpreting numbers, write down the exact URL or admin action, whether you were logged in, the account role, the device or browser, and whether the request was a normal page load, AJAX action, REST request, cron-like operation, or redirect. For a game site, distinguish an article page, search results, a taxonomy archive, a logged-in profile, and an editor preview: each can execute different code.

Open the toolbar on the request that is actually slow. Opening Query Monitor on a fast homepage and then examining a slow AJAX call will not show the AJAX call; repeat the failing request itself.

Read the toolbar summary before opening panels

The top figures provide a baseline for one page generation. Compare like with like: the same URL, query string, login state, cache state and request type. A logged-in editor view commonly runs different code from a logged-out reader view, and a cold cache can differ from a warm cache.

  • High page-generation time with low SQL time: inspect PHP execution, hooks, remote calls, template rendering and other non-database work.
  • High SQL time: open Queries and Queries by Component, then inspect the named caller and query pattern.
  • Many queries but modest total SQL time: look for duplicate queries, repeated metadata reads and missing caching; count alone is not a diagnosis.
  • High peak memory: inspect requests that load large result sets, build complex blocks, or produce hundreds of queries.

Because no historical capture is retained, save your own before-and-after notes or screenshots if you need to compare a change.

Start with Timeline

Open the Timeline panel first. Its visual sequence gives the fastest overview of where request time is spent and helps you decide which detailed panel to open next. A long interval before SQL begins points toward PHP or a remote call; a dense SQL section points toward database work; late rendering and asset events point toward templates, blocks, scripts or styles.

Timeline is a map, not a complete explanation. Use the interval to choose a component and then confirm it in the relevant panel. Do not infer that the visually longest event is an intrinsically bad plugin: it may be waiting on an external service or handling unusually large input for this request.

Find database bottlenecks with Queries

Inspect individual queries

The Queries panel shows the SQL issued during the request. Use its notices and details to check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Total SQL time and the contribution of individual statements.
  • Slow queries, duplicate queries and queries that returned errors.
  • Query type, the calling function, and the arguments or SQL text needed for code review.

Look for a statement repeated for every item in a list, a metadata lookup executed dozens of times, an unbounded query on a large table, or a failed query that triggers fallback work. A slow statement may be caused by data volume, missing indexes, an inefficient caller, or a temporary database condition. Query Monitor reports the statement that ran; it does not establish which remedy is safe.

Group work by component

Select Queries by Component to aggregate database activity by WordPress core, the active theme, and individual plugins. Compare each component’s query count and aggregate SQL time with the individual statements in Queries. A component with the highest aggregate is a strong lead for code review and a controlled test, not a verdict that the component is defective in every context.

For a controlled test on staging, disable one suspected plugin or switch to a minimal theme, reproduce the identical request, and capture the same four toolbar measures. Re-enable the component and test again before changing another variable. Check whether the feature still works; a lower SQL total that breaks game listings or login is not a successful fix.

Consider caching and indexes

If repeated reads dominate, inspect query arguments, relevant database indexes and whether a persistent object cache is available. Query Monitor can flag the absence of persistent object caching. WordPress’s default object cache is non-persistent, so values are normally discarded at the end of a request; a persistent cache can reuse results across page loads. Treat cache installation, key design and invalidation as infrastructure changes: test updates, deletions and cache clearing on staging before deployment.

Diagnose slow server-to-server calls

Open HTTP API Calls when Timeline or page-generation time suggests a remote dependency. For every call, record the destination URL, response code, duration, timeout behavior and responsible component. An external game-data feed, analytics endpoint or license service can be intermittent even when the browser itself appears fast, because the call occurs on the server during page generation.

Test the remote service separately and inspect the responsible code’s timeout and retry policy. Add bounded timeouts and appropriate retries in that code rather than hiding the symptom by ignoring the panel. A successful response can still be too slow for a page request; a fast error can still trigger expensive fallback processing.

Instrument Guzzle requests

Requests made through WordPress’s HTTP API are visible in the HTTP API panel. Applications that use Guzzle can add Query Monitor’s documented middleware so those requests are collected as well. Verify that the middleware is enabled only in the environment where you are debugging and that request headers or bodies do not expose credentials.

Trace PHP warnings, notices and fatals

The PHP Errors panel lists warnings, notices and fatal errors captured during the request. Open each entry, note the component name, file and stack trace, and reproduce with the same user role and request parameters before editing code. A warning emitted only for a logged-in editor or only on an AJAX endpoint may require a different fix from one emitted for every visitor.

The related “Doing it Wrong” notices identify API misuse such as an action run too early or an invalid parameter. Follow the stack to the hook and caller that generated the notice. In a public bug report, remove passwords, authentication tokens, personally identifiable request data and private URLs; stack traces can contain all of them.

Use hooks, templates and blocks for rendering problems

When the symptom is incorrect output rather than a slow database, use the rendering panels:

  • Hooks and actions: inspect which callbacks ran, their priorities, and whether a callback from a theme or plugin altered the result.
  • Template and block information: confirm the selected template hierarchy, active theme template, and blocks responsible for the output.
  • Scripts and styles: check enqueued files, dependencies, versions and ordering when a gallery, video embed, menu or editor control fails.

Compare the problematic site with a minimal theme or an isolated plugin set on staging. Change one component at a time. If a script loads late, first establish whether its dependency chain or an enqueue callback caused the order; do not simply remove an asset that another feature needs.

Check request context and the environment

Before changing code, open Query Monitor’s request and environment information. Confirm the query variables, rewrite state, conditional tags, selected template, current user capability, PHP limits, active theme, object-cache status and other environment values. These details explain many apparent inconsistencies:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A taxonomy archive can select a different template and query than a single post.
  • A REST or AJAX request may not load the same template or toolbar output as a browser page.
  • Capability checks can make an expensive admin callback run only for editors.
  • Different PHP memory or execution-time limits can turn a warning into a fatal error.
  • A cache hit can remove the code path you are trying to measure.

Also inspect the request, redirect, conditionals, transients, REST and Guzzle-related panels when the symptom points there. Use the environment values to make your reproduction match the failing context instead of assuming that two URLs execute identical code.

Debug AJAX, REST and redirect requests

AJAX

  1. Open the browser action that triggers the failure, such as loading more game posts or saving an editor field.
  2. Identify the exact AJAX request in the browser’s Network panel and repeat it while logged in with Query Monitor access.
  3. Open the Query Monitor output associated with that request, then inspect Timeline, Queries, HTTP API Calls and PHP Errors.
  4. Record the action name, user capability, response code and server-side duration before changing code.

A front-end page may be fast while its AJAX request is slow; profile the request that performs the work, not only the page that starts it.

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

REST

Repeat the exact REST method, route, parameters and authentication state. Use request and REST information to verify route callbacks, permission checks and response construction. A REST response can fail before template rendering, so a template panel that looks normal does not clear the route callback.

Redirects and cron-like operations

For redirects, capture both the initiating request and the destination when possible. For cron-like or command-triggered work, reproduce the same hook and arguments in staging; a normal browser page will not contain the same context. Query Monitor’s current-request model means each leg must be examined separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Interpret attribution without blaming the wrong component

Query Monitor attaches queries, errors and calls to a plugin, theme, WordPress core or caller when that information is available. Attribution answers “which code path ran?” It does not answer “would this component be slow on every site?” A plugin may appear responsible because it received a large result set, waited for a remote service, or was called by another component.

Use this investigation loop:

  1. Capture a baseline on staging with the exact failing request.
  2. Choose one lead from Timeline or a component aggregate.
  3. Inspect the specific function, query, hook or remote call.
  4. Change one variable, such as a setting, index, cache configuration or isolated component.
  5. Reload the same request and compare page time, memory, SQL time and query count.
  6. Run functional checks for publishing, login, search, embeds and any game-specific feature affected by the change.
  7. Promote only a tested change, with a rollback plan.

If deactivating a component makes the page faster, continue investigating its code path and interaction with other components. Do not publish a blanket claim that the plugin is inherently slow from one request.

Access control, sensitive data and production safety

By default, Query Monitor output is shown to Administrators on single-site installations and Super Admins on multisite. Keep that restriction unless another trusted user genuinely needs access.

An authentication cookie can grant Query Monitor access to a logged-out or otherwise unauthorized user. Enable that mechanism only deliberately, transmit it through a protected channel, and remove or rotate the access after troubleshooting. Never share screenshots or bug reports containing cookies, authorization headers, tokens, passwords, email addresses or private request payloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official FAQ describes Query Monitor’s impact on page generation as small, while noting that memory use can rise on requests containing hundreds of database queries. Debugging collection is still work: it records query timing and caller information and can change the behavior of a marginal request. WordPress’s Advanced Administration Handbook advises using WP_DEBUG and related tools on local or staging installations rather than live sites. If SAVEQUERIES is enabled, it stores each query with timing and caller data and has a performance cost; turn it off when debugging ends.

A repeatable close-out checklist

  • Reproduce the exact URL, screen, AJAX action, REST route or background operation.
  • Record login state, role, cache state and the four toolbar measurements.
  • Use Timeline to locate the dominant interval.
  • Confirm SQL leads in Queries and Queries by Component.
  • Check HTTP API Calls for remote latency, response codes and timeouts.
  • Review PHP errors and “Doing it Wrong” stacks.
  • Inspect hooks, templates, blocks, scripts and styles for rendering or asset symptoms.
  • Verify request variables, capabilities, limits, theme and object-cache state.
  • Test one change at a time on staging and repeat the same request.
  • Run functional checks, deploy with a rollback plan, disable unnecessary collection and turn off SAVEQUERIES.

Used this way, Query Monitor turns a vague complaint such as “the site feels slow” into a reproducible server-side path that a developer can inspect, test and fix without guessing.
