In EA SPORTS College Football 26, a hot route changes a receiver’s route, a smart route adjusts an eligible route’s break depth toward the first-down marker or goal line, and a custom stem lets you adjust route depth yourself. All three are pre-snap tools, and the route options available depend on the receiver and play.

How to use a smart route
- Before the snap, get to the line of scrimmage and press Y on Xbox or Triangle on PlayStation to open the receiver adjustments.
- Select the receiver using the icon shown on screen.
- Press RB on Xbox or R1 on PlayStation to apply a smart route, if the selected route supports it.
CollegeFootball.gg describes the smart route as sending the receiver just past the first-down marker before the route break; near the goal line, the goal line can serve as the reference instead. The resulting depth depends on the distance to that reference. A roughly five-yard hitch on first-and-10, for example, may be adjusted to break a little beyond 10 yards, while a shorter or longer distance to gain calls for a different depth. That can help target the line to gain, but it may leave less open field for yards after the catch. (CollegeFootball.gg; Insider Gaming)
Eligibility depends on the route. CollegeFootball.gg lists ins, outs, posts, corners, and curls among routes that can be smart-routed, and slants, zigs, and crossing routes among those that cannot. Treat those as examples, not a universal rule: check the in-game prompt for the selected route.

How to change a route with a hot route
- Before the snap, press Triangle on PlayStation or Y on Xbox.
- Select the receiver whose route you want to change.
- Flick the left or right stick in the direction corresponding to the desired route option shown at the bottom-left of the screen.
A hot route replaces the selected receiver’s assigned route with a different available route. Use the displayed menu as the authority: the choices are not necessarily the same for every receiver or play. This procedure is described by Insider Gaming.
How to adjust a custom stem
- Before the snap, press Y on Xbox or Triangle on PlayStation.
- Select the receiver.
- Hold LB on Xbox or L1 on PlayStation while moving the left stick up or down to lengthen or shorten the route.
Unlike a smart route, a custom stem does not automatically target the marker; you choose the depth. CollegeFootball.gg warns that tapping rather than holding LB/L1 can be mistaken for the smart-route input. Watch the on-screen prompt and route preview when adjusting.

EA Design Director Scott O’Gallagher described the feature in EA’s June 20, 2025 College Football 26 gameplay deep dive: “Last year, we introduced Custom Stems, giving you the ability to adjust the depth and angle of your offensive routes exactly how you want them.” EA’s College Football 25 gameplay deep dive previously described left-stick one-yard changes and D-pad five-yard increments. That is historical control context from the 2024 game, not a separately confirmed input specification for College Football 26.

Which adjustment should you use?
- Use a hot route when you want a different route concept and the menu offers the option you need.
- Use a smart route when you want an eligible route’s break depth adjusted in relation to the line to gain or goal line.
- Use a custom stem when you want to manually tune a route’s depth instead of having the game target a field marker.
