How to Use SRS and FFmpeg to Transcode a Playlist for YouTube Live

A practical guide to sequencing prerecorded files with FFmpeg, relaying or transcoding through SRS, and publishing a correctly configured stream to YouTube Live.

To stream a playlist through SRS to YouTube Live, let FFmpeg handle the media and playlist order, let SRS receive or relay the RTMP stream (and optionally launch FFmpeg for transcoding), then publish the final output to the YouTube server URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s Live Control Room. SRS is not a playlist manager: its archived v4 ingest guide says it accepts one input, not a file list, and recommends a script to send files one by one. The steps below separate those jobs and flag where your installed versions matter.

Choose which component sequences the playlist

There are two distinct tasks: selecting what plays next, and encoding the outgoing video and audio. FFmpeg can read and encode media; SRS can act as an RTMP server or relay and, when configured, fork FFmpeg to transcode an incoming stream. You must decide which process owns playlist sequencing before configuring the path to YouTube.

Use a script to publish files sequentially

SRS’s archived v4 ingest guide says, “SRS does not ingest a file list.” Its documented workaround is to use a script as the ingest tool and have FFmpeg publish files to RTMP one by one. This is the clearest documented choice when files should play in sequence, but you must define what happens between files and when the list ends: a gap, a restart, or a return to the first file depends on your script. The archived guide is not proof that every detail is unchanged in newer SRS releases, so verify behavior against the release you install. SRS v4 archived ingest guide.

Use an FFmpeg playlist or concat input

Alternatively, make FFmpeg own the playlist and send its output to SRS. The official SRS documentation reviewed here does not establish one looped concat command that works across FFmpeg builds, formats, and transition requirements. Test your exact input files and FFmpeg version, including end-of-list behavior, before relying on it for a live channel; do not assume that SRS itself will advance a file list.

Map the stream path before you configure it

A common arrangement is playlist files → FFmpeg → SRS → YouTube Live. FFmpeg reads or sequences files and can encode them before they reach SRS. Another documented SRS v6 arrangement is RTMP publisher → SRS → SRS-forked FFmpeg → SRS or another server; use that when you want SRS to start the transcoding process. These are different ownership models, not a requirement to encode twice. Pick one place to control the final codec, dimensions, frame rate, bitrate, and audio settings. SRS’s v6 guide documents both transcoding controls and a `copy` mode for streams that do not need re-encoding. SRS v6 FFmpeg and transcoding guide.

  • Copy/remux: avoids a new encode when the source streams are suitable for the destination. It does not change resolution, frame rate, or bitrate.
  • Transcode: re-encodes so you can change those output properties, at the cost of additional encoding work. The documentation provides no workload benchmark; capacity depends on your input, settings, and host.
  • Playlist owner: a script that advances files or an FFmpeg playlist input. SRS’s archived ingest guide documents the script workaround, not native multi-file ingest.

Set up SRS and publish an input

  1. Install and start the SRS release you intend to run. Configuration syntax is version-specific. The transcoding guide used here is for SRS v6 stable; the RTMP guide surfaced here is v7 and marked unstable, while the file-list limitation comes from archived v4 documentation. Check the guide matching your installed release before copying configuration. SRS v7 RTMP guide (unstable).
  2. Choose the SRS ingest endpoint. SRS’s getting-started page demonstrates a local RTMP endpoint shaped like rtmp://localhost/live/livestream. Its example command, ffmpeg -re -i ./doc/source.flv -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost/live/livestream, publishes one local file to that example endpoint. It is not a ready-made playlist loop or a YouTube destination command. SRS getting started.
  3. Connect your chosen playlist publisher to SRS. For sequential files, have your script invoke FFmpeg for each file and publish to the configured SRS RTMP application and stream name. For an FFmpeg playlist input, confirm that your installed FFmpeg build handles the intended files and desired end-of-list behavior. Keep the SRS endpoint private to your deployment; do not mistake the local example for a public server address.
  4. Decide whether to encode before or after SRS. Encoding in the publishing FFmpeg process puts output settings there. SRS v6 can also fork FFmpeg when configured, mapping SRS parameters to FFmpeg codec, video/audio bitrate, frame rate, dimensions, profile/preset, sample rate, channels, and filters. Configure only the controls you need, and check units: generated FFmpeg bitrate arguments use bits per second (bps), while SRS configuration bitrate values are in kilobits per second (kbps).

Match YouTube’s ingest settings

In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the live server URL and stream key for the stream, then configure the final publisher output with those values. YouTube’s setup guide directs creators to enter its server URL and stream key into the encoder. Never put a real key in a public configuration example, screenshot, article, or log; treat it as a credential. YouTube live streaming setup guide.

Use the settings page’s row for your target resolution and frame rate rather than copying a demo bitrate. The following are YouTube Help recommendations, not guarantees of quality; recheck the live encoder settings page because platform guidance can change. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Setting YouTube guidance How to apply it
Protocol RTMP or RTMPS; RTMPS is recommended for encryption. Use the secure ingest URL supplied in Live Control Room when available, and confirm that your chosen SRS/FFmpeg path supports it. SRS documentation includes RTMP/RTMPS examples, but exact support depends on the release and route.
Rate control CBR. Set constant bitrate at the publishing encoder if you are encoding. Choose the platform table row for the output resolution and frame rate.
Video codec and frame rate H.264, H.265, or AV1; up to 60 fps. Ensure the final stream—not merely the source file—matches the selected codec and frame rate. If using stream copy, the source must already be suitable.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly. A two-second interval means keyframes are spaced at two-second intervals in the output.
H.264 video bitrate example For 1080p at 30 fps: 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. This specific row is for H.264 at 1080p30. Do not reuse it for another resolution, frame rate, or codec; consult YouTube’s current table.
Audio AAC or MP3; stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps is recommended in advanced settings. Set the final audio encoder and output properties, or verify the copied source already matches the intended settings.

Keep the selected bitrate within the reliable upload capacity of the machine publishing to SRS or YouTube, depending on your architecture. YouTube advises that stream quality must suit the available connection; the figures above are not a substitute for testing that connection.

Send the final output to YouTube

  1. Copy the ingest URL and key from the relevant YouTube Live Control Room settings.
  2. Set the final publishing output to those credentials, using the secure RTMPS URL when available and supported by your chosen path. If SRS is forwarding to YouTube, configure that output in the part of the system that owns the final publish. If FFmpeg publishes directly, configure it there instead.
  3. Keep credentials out of shared text. Do not hard-code a public key in a script committed to a repository or include it in captured logs. Store it using a private configuration or secret-handling method appropriate to your server.
  4. Start a test broadcast with representative video motion and audio. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Confirm that YouTube receives the intended resolution, frame rate, audio, and stream health before scheduling a real broadcast.

Test playlist behavior and monitor the stream

A stream that works for one file may still fail at a file boundary. Test the full sequence you plan to run, not just the first clip. Verify that the next file starts, that audio remains acceptable across transitions, and that the list behaves as intended at its end. If the stream is meant to continue indefinitely, verify the loop or restart behavior in the script or FFmpeg input; do not assume SRS supplies it.

  • Watch the SRS and FFmpeg process output for input, encoder, and publish errors.
  • Check YouTube’s stream health and preview for dropped connection, bitrate, audio, and format warnings.
  • Verify the chosen output bitrate remains sustainable on the actual publishing connection.
  • Monitor during the event. YouTube Help says to “monitor the stream health and review messages” during a live stream.
  • After changing an encoder setting, repeat the test so you know which process controls the actual output.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
SRS accepts the first file but never advances to the next. The configured ingest is a single input, not a file list. Use a script to publish files one by one, as described in the archived v4 ingest guide, or make FFmpeg own a tested playlist input.
FFmpeg or SRS rejects a transcoding setting. Configuration syntax differs by SRS version, or a bitrate unit was translated incorrectly. Use the guide for the installed release; distinguish SRS kbps values from generated FFmpeg bps arguments.
YouTube does not receive the stream. Wrong server URL/key, wrong publishing process, or unsupported transport on the selected path. Refresh the URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm which process publishes to YouTube, and test the supported RTMPS/RTMP route.
The stream starts but YouTube reports quality or health warnings. Output settings do not match the chosen YouTube row or the connection cannot sustain them. Check final-output resolution, frame rate, codec, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and available upload capacity; run another test.
Video plays without expected audio, or sound changes at a file boundary. Source audio may differ between files, be absent, or be incompatible with the intended copied output. Inspect representative files and configure consistent output audio when transcoding; retest the transitions.
The stream ends when the playlist finishes. No loop or restart behavior is configured by the playlist-owning process. Set and test the desired end-of-list behavior in your script or FFmpeg input; SRS ingest does not supply a documented playlist loop.

Account for copyright and YouTube live rules

Only stream media you have the rights and permissions to broadcast, including music and other embedded audio. YouTube’s live-streaming rules and copyright enforcement apply to prerecorded playlists just as they do to other live content. A technically healthy RTMP feed does not establish that the material is authorized or eligible for monetization. Check YouTube’s current policies and rights for each item before scheduling the stream.
