Yes, Steam works on Mac—but installing the Steam client and running a particular game are separate questions. Your Mac should use macOS 12 Monterey or later, and each game must list macOS support and meet your Mac’s processor, memory, graphics, storage, and operating-system requirements. This guide covers the complete path from checking compatibility to installing Steam, downloading a game, using a controller, and fixing common problems.
Yes—you can use Steam on a Mac to download and play games, but two compatibility checks matter: Steam itself must support your macOS version, and the individual game must have a current macOS version that meets your Mac’s hardware requirements. Installing Steam does not make Windows-only games playable on macOS.

For a current setup, use a Mac running macOS 12 Monterey or later. Valve ended Steam support for macOS 11 Big Sur on October 15, 2025. Apple-silicon Macs can run many Intel Mac applications through Rosetta, but Rosetta is not a guarantee that every Intel game, launcher, graphics component, or anti-cheat system will work.
Before you install Steam: check your Mac
1. Check the macOS version
- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner.
- Choose About This Mac or System Settings > General > About, depending on your macOS version.
- Note the macOS version and whether the Mac uses an Intel processor or Apple silicon.
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and install an available compatible update if appropriate.
A Mac running macOS 11 Big Sur should not be treated as a supported Steam configuration for this guide. Upgrade to macOS 12 or later before relying on the current Steam client. If your Mac cannot upgrade beyond macOS 11, Steam may not provide a supported client experience.

2. Check the game—not just Steam
Steam’s macOS support only tells you that the client can run. Every game has separate requirements for its operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage, and sometimes third-party launchers or anti-cheat software.
On the game’s Steam store page, look for the System Requirements section and confirm that macOS is listed. Steam’s store search includes a macOS platform filter, but the individual store page is the more important check. A game can appear in your Library and still be Windows-only, have an obsolete Mac build, or require hardware your Mac does not have.
Apple silicon, Intel games, and Rosetta
Apple-silicon Macs—models with an M-series chip—can use Apple’s Rosetta translation technology to run many Intel-based Mac applications. macOS may ask you to install Rosetta the first time you open an Intel-based application.

Do not assume that Rosetta makes every Intel game compatible: a game may depend on an incompatible graphics API, an outdated 32-bit component, a separate launcher, or anti-cheat software that does not support your Mac.
How to download and install Steam on a Mac
Download Steam from the official Steam website. Avoid software mirrors and unofficial “Steam Mac installer” downloads.

- Open a browser and go to Steam’s official download page.
- Choose the macOS download.
- Open the downloaded disk image or installer package.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. If macOS displays an application window, drag Steam to the Applications folder when instructed.
- Open Applications, double-click Steam, and allow macOS to verify or open the application if prompted.
- Sign in with your Steam account, or choose the option to create an account.
macOS commonly installs downloaded applications by opening a disk image or package and following its installer instructions. If Gatekeeper prevents an app from opening, first confirm that you obtained Steam from the official source rather than bypassing security for an unverified copy.
How to find a Mac-compatible game in Steam
- Open Steam and select Store.
- Search for a game or browse the store.
- Use Steam’s macOS platform filter if you want to narrow the results.
- Open the game’s individual store page.
- Read the Mac system requirements and compare them with your Mac’s processor, memory, graphics capability, available storage, and macOS version.
Do not rely only on a game’s presence in your Library. A Steam purchase does not necessarily include a Mac build, and a title that once supported macOS may no longer have a current or playable version.

- Select Library in the Steam client.
- Choose the game you want to install.
- Click Install.
- Choose a Steam Library location if Steam asks where to put the game.
- Review the required disk space and confirm the installation.
- Wait for Steam to download and install the files.

There is no reliable fixed download time. The wait depends on the game’s size, your internet connection, Steam’s content server, available storage, and other downloads or applications using the Mac.
Where Steam stores Mac games
Steam stores games inside a Steam Library folder. You can create or select additional library locations from Steam’s storage controls and move installed games using the client’s built-in move function where available.
- Open Steam’s settings.
- Open Storage.
- Select an existing library location or add another drive and create a Steam Library folder.
- Select a game and use the available move option if you want to transfer it.
Keep more free space than the game’s initial download requires. Updates, temporary installation files, shader data, and saved games can need additional room.

A portable external SSD for Mac can be a practical way to expand a game library, especially when the Mac’s internal drive is small. Configure the external drive as a Steam game-library location rather than automatically moving the whole Steam application. Valve warns that installing the Steam application itself on an external hard drive is not recommended because of possible performance issues. An external SSD is optional and does not automatically increase a game’s frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePlay with a keyboard, mouse, or controller
You do not need a controller to use Steam on a Mac. Many games work with a keyboard and mouse, while others are more comfortable with a gamepad.
Steam’s Big Picture mode provides a television-style, controller-oriented interface and is documented for Macs running macOS 12 or later. Steam lists support for Steam Controller, Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers. Exact behavior still depends on the controller, connection method, macOS version, and game.
Steam distinguishes between two useful store labels:
| Steam label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Full Controller Support | The game can be downloaded, launched, and played using only a controller. |
| Partial Controller Support | You may need a keyboard or mouse for setup, menus, text entry, launchers, or some in-game functions. |
If you want a gamepad, look for a Mac-compatible game controller with Bluetooth or USB-C connectivity. Treat controller support as a game-by-game feature rather than assuming every Steam title will recognize the same controller.
Connect a controller to a Mac
- Put the controller into pairing mode if you are using Bluetooth, then pair it in System Settings > Bluetooth.
- For a wired controller or wireless receiver, connect it to a compatible port.
- If your Mac has no USB-A port, use a USB-C connection or a suitable USB-C adapter for a gaming controller.
- Open Steam and test the controller in Steam’s controller settings or in a game that lists controller support.
macOS may ask you to approve a newly connected device. If a paired controller is unresponsive, check System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring and look for Steam. Some Steam trackpad- or mouse-control features may also require Steam under Accessibility. Input Monitoring and Accessibility are sensitive permissions, so grant them only to software you trust and understand what the permission allows.
What to do when a Mac game will not launch
Work through these checks in order. File verification is useful, but it cannot fix every compatibility problem.

- Confirm macOS support. Reopen the game’s store page and make sure it lists macOS, not only Windows or Linux.
- Compare the requirements. Check the Mac’s processor, memory, graphics hardware, storage, and macOS version against the game’s requirements.
- Update macOS. Use System Settings > General > Software Update to install an available compatible update.
- Restart Steam and the Mac. This can clear a stuck client process or temporary system problem.
- Close unnecessary applications. Quit other games, launchers, browsers with many tabs, recording tools, and background utilities before trying again.
- Verify the installed files. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
Verification can help when files are missing, textures are unavailable, or a game crashes because an installed file is damaged. It may take several minutes. Steam may report that one or more files failed verification because they are local configuration files; that can be normal. Verification does not solve an unsupported macOS version, incompatible hardware, a broken third-party launcher, or every anti-cheat problem.
If Steam says a game is uninstalled
Steam may lose track of a game when its library folder has moved, an alternate drive is disconnected, or the client is looking at a different library location.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Confirm that the external drive or other library location is connected.
- Open Steam’s Storage settings and add or select the library where the game files already exist.
- Start the game’s installation process again. Steam may detect the existing files instead of downloading everything from scratch.
- Make sure you are signed into the Steam account that owns the game.
Also check for hidden games and confirm that the purchase completed. Missing games are often caused by the wrong Steam account, a hidden-game filter, or an incomplete purchase rather than deleted files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reinstall Steam without immediately deleting your games
Reinstalling Steam should be a later troubleshooting step, not the first response to a single game crash. Before removing it, confirm that you know your Steam account credentials.
- Quit Steam completely.
- Remove the Steam application from the Mac.
- In Finder, navigate to
Library/Application Support/Steamin your user account. - If you want to preserve downloaded game data, remove the Steam files and folders except the
SteamAppsfolder. - Download and install Steam again from the official Steam website.
- Sign in and allow Steam to rediscover the existing library if necessary.
Deleting the entire Steam folder removes all Steam data from that Mac. Make sure important saves are synchronized or backed up where applicable before deleting data. Also remember that Steam is required to launch games purchased through Steam; removing the client is not a way to play those games independently.

Start a download remotely
Steam can let you manage downloads from the web or the Steam Mobile app. The Steam client must be logged in on the home Mac or PC that will receive the installation. From the web or mobile app, select a game and start its installation on that active computer.
Recommended Free Tools
Use remote downloads only with a private, secured computer. Do not leave your Steam account signed in on a shared or public machine, and remember that the destination Mac still needs enough storage and must meet the game’s macOS requirements.
Steam on Mac: the practical compatibility checklist
- Use macOS 12 or later; macOS 11 Big Sur is no longer supported by Steam after October 15, 2025.
- Download Steam from the official Steam website.
- Check the individual game page for macOS support and hardware requirements.
- Do not assume Apple silicon or Rosetta can run Windows-only games.
- Install games through Library > Install and leave room for updates.
- Use Steam’s Storage settings for alternate libraries and game moves.
- Keep the Steam application on the Mac’s internal drive when possible; use an external SSD for a game library only when configured appropriately.
- Check the game’s controller-support label before buying or pairing a gamepad.
- Use Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files for missing or damaged game files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can every Steam game run on a Mac?
Yes, but only if the individual game has a Mac version and your Mac meets its requirements. Steam’s macOS filter is useful for browsing, but always check the game’s own store page. Windows-only games do not become Mac-compatible because they are in your Steam Library.
What macOS version does Steam require?
Steam’s current supported configuration is macOS 12 Monterey or later. Valve ended Steam support for macOS 11 Big Sur on October 15, 2025.
Does Rosetta make all Steam games work on Apple-silicon Macs?
No. Rosetta can translate many Intel-based Mac applications on Apple-silicon Macs, but it does not run Windows games and cannot guarantee compatibility with every Intel game, launcher, graphics component, or anti-cheat system.
Do I need a controller to play Steam games on Mac?
No. A controller is optional. Check the game’s Steam page for Full Controller Support or Partial Controller Support; the latter may still require a keyboard or mouse.
Can I install Steam games on an external SSD?
Yes, Steam lets you add alternate library locations and move installed games through its Storage settings. Valve does not recommend installing the Steam application itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues.
The Bottom Line
Steam works on Mac when the client, macOS version, and individual game are all compatible. Update to macOS 12 or later, install Steam from its official website, verify macOS support on each game page, and use Steam’s Storage and file-verification tools when installation or launch problems occur.
