Steam Remote Play streams a game from your gaming PC to another device, while Remote Play Together lets friends join compatible local multiplayer games over the internet. The host PC still runs the game; Steam sends video and audio to the client and returns controller or keyboard input to the host.
Steam Remote Play lets you play a game on one computer while seeing and controlling it from another device. The game runs on your gaming PC, which acts as the host. Steam streams its video and audio to a phone, tablet, TV, Steam Deck, laptop, another PC, or supported Steam Link client, while your controller or keyboard input travels back to the host.

That means Remote Play is not cloud gaming: the host PC must be powered on, connected to the network, signed in to Steam, and able to run the game. It is also not a conventional remote-desktop session. In a normal session, the client receives the game stream rather than unrestricted access to the host’s desktop.

How to set up Remote Play Anywhere
1. Prepare the host gaming PC
- Install Steam on the gaming PC.
- Sign in to the Steam account that owns the game.
- Install the game on that computer.
- Leave the PC powered on, connected to the network, and running Steam when you want to connect remotely.
- Make sure the firewall allows Steam and the game to communicate. Steam may require permission for both TCP and UDP traffic.
The host performs the actual game processing, including rendering the game and encoding the outgoing video. The client mainly decodes the stream and sends back input, so it does not need to be powerful enough to run the game natively. It does, however, need a supported Steam Link app or Steam client and a stable connection.
On the host, check Steam’s Remote Play or streaming settings and ensure the feature is enabled. Steam’s labels and settings locations can vary by version, so use the Remote Play section in Steam Settings if the client cannot connect.
2. Install Steam Link or use Steam on another PC
For a phone, tablet, TV, streaming box, or other supported device, install the Steam Link app from that platform’s app store. Steam Link is the client endpoint; Remote Play is the streaming feature that connects it to the host.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor a second Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, install Steam and sign in. Valve’s PC-to-PC method is to open the Steam Library on the second computer and start the game remotely from there. For other devices, use the Steam Link app’s connection and pairing flow.
3. Pair the client with the host
- Open Steam Link on the client.
- Start its connection or pairing process.
- Select the computer running Steam when it appears.
- Enter or confirm the displayed pairing authorization code.
- Open the host’s Steam Library and select a game.
Discovery is usually easiest when both devices are on the same home network. The host does not necessarily have to be in the same room, but both devices must be able to reach each other through the network. If the host is missing, confirm that it is powered on, Steam is running and signed in, and the firewall is not blocking Steam.
4. Connect a controller and start the game
Pair a compatible Bluetooth controller, connect one by USB, or use the client device’s keyboard and mouse where appropriate. The controller should generally be connected to the client—the device you are holding or watching—not assumed to be connected directly to the host.

A wired USB game controller for PC gaming can be a straightforward option for a laptop, TV-connected client, or Steam Link setup, but compatibility depends on the client operating system and the game. Steam’s store labels distinguish Full Controller Support from Partial Controller Support. A game with partial support may require a keyboard or mouse for its launcher, menus, or setup even if gameplay works with a controller.

How to use Remote Play Together with friends
Remote Play Together is for games that support local multiplayer, local co-op, shared-screen play, or split-screen play. It can provide an online-style session even when the game itself has no native online multiplayer. The host launches the game and streams the session; invited players do not normally need to buy or install that game.
- Launch the compatible game on the host PC.
- Open the Steam overlay, normally with Shift+Tab on a PC.
- Open the Friends List.
- Right-click the friend you want to invite.
- Choose Remote Play Together.
- Have the friend accept the invitation.
- Use the Remote Play controls to assign controllers and decide whether keyboard-and-mouse sharing is allowed.
In the normal consumer description, Valve refers to sessions of up to four players, with more potentially possible on fast connections. Treat that as a practical guideline rather than a universal technical limit: the game, current Steam behavior, host hardware, connection quality, and the number of video streams all affect what works.
Friends can also participate from a mobile device. Valve describes accepting an invitation through the Steam Chat mobile app, after which the game opens in the Steam Link mobile app. The resulting experience still depends on the invited player’s device, controller support, and network.
What friends can see and control
Remote Play Together shows participants the game stream rather than automatically giving them access to the host’s entire desktop. The host can configure or limit keyboard-and-mouse sharing through the Remote Play controls. Review those permissions before allowing another player to control input, particularly if the game opens external launchers or system dialogs.

How to check whether a game supports Remote Play
Look at the game’s Steam store page for Remote Play Together or device-oriented Remote Play information. Valve’s developer documentation associates Remote Play Together with local multiplayer, local co-op, shared-screen, and split-screen capabilities. Other Remote Play indicators describe suitability for streaming to phones, tablets, TVs, or Steam Link clients.
A support label is useful evidence of intended compatibility, but it is not a promise that every setup will feel identical. Remote Play can be technically supported while still being inconvenient because of:
- small text or menus designed for a mouse;
- launchers that do not behave well through the Steam overlay;
- anti-cheat or third-party software limitations;
- games that expect very low latency, such as competitive fighting or rhythm games;
- partial controller support; or
- an unsuitable client display, decoder, or network.
For Remote Play Together specifically, confirm that the store page identifies the feature before inviting friends. Not every local multiplayer game supports it, and not every game with multiplayer support uses the same input arrangement.
How to get lower latency and a clearer stream
Use Ethernet where possible
Valve recommends connecting the gaming PC directly to the router with Ethernet. A wired connection is also preferable for the Steam Link client, TV, or dock when the device supports it. Ethernet is not an absolute requirement—Remote Play can work over Wi-Fi—but it generally reduces interference, handoffs, and unpredictable congestion.
A strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection is the usual alternative. Keep the client within good range of the access point, avoid congested channels where possible, and remember that a mesh system may add another wireless hop or move the device between nodes.
If you need one, an Ethernet cable for Steam Remote Play is a simple upgrade for the host or a compatible client. It does not guarantee low latency, and Cat6 is not required for Remote Play; the point is the stable wired path. Devices without a network port may instead need a compatible USB-C Ethernet adapter or dock. Verify that the particular phone, tablet, Steam Deck, TV, or client supports wired networking before buying one.

Watch Steam’s performance statistics
Steam provides Remote Play performance statistics or advanced client options in supported versions. Enable them while diagnosing a problem and look for measures such as:
- Dropped frames: frames that fail to arrive or display smoothly.
- Network latency or network-related loss: evidence pointing toward Wi-Fi, the router, the ISP path, or firewall/network conditions.
- Host encode time: a possible sign that the host PC is struggling to encode the stream while running the game.
- Client decode time: a possible sign that the receiving device cannot decode the stream quickly enough.
These are practical diagnostic clues, not a guaranteed one-to-one diagnosis. For example, a busy host can create both high encode time and network-looking symptoms, while a congested wireless link can make the whole stream appear slow.
Reduce competing traffic
Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video uploads, and other high-bandwidth activity while testing. Close unnecessary CPU- or GPU-heavy programs on the host. If performance changes at particular times of day, compare another time and consider local network or ISP congestion.
If the stream is unreliable, temporarily lower the streaming quality or resolution. This helps determine whether the limiting factor is network capacity, host encoding, or client decoding. Test another client device as well: if one device works and another does not, the problem may be the receiving device rather than the host.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Audio, surround sound, and TV setups
Steam supports stereo audio from supported streaming host operating systems to supported clients. Windows clients can also stream four-channel and 5.1 surround audio. Linux and macOS clients may require manual speaker configuration for 5.1.
For a TV or receiver setup, six-channel PCM support may be required. Valve notes that HDMI is usually needed for that PCM path on a Steam Link rather than optical audio. An HDMI cable for a Steam Link gaming TV setup is therefore relevant when connecting a compatible client to a television or receiver, but it is not required for ordinary phone, tablet, or PC Remote Play.

Remote Play troubleshooting
Steam Link cannot find the host
- Confirm that the host PC is powered on.
- Confirm that Steam is running and signed in.
- Check that both devices are on a reachable network and not isolated by guest-network settings.
- Recheck Remote Play or streaming enablement in Steam Settings.
- Check the firewall and create an exception for Steam and, where needed, the game.
- Restart Steam Link and Steam, then try pairing again.
Do not leave the firewall permanently disabled. If you temporarily disable it only as a diagnostic test and the host then appears, restore the firewall and create the appropriate Steam exception.
The stream is blurry, stutters, or has input delay
- Connect the host directly to the router with Ethernet.
- Connect the client by Ethernet if practical.
- Move a wireless client closer to the access point or try a less congested 5 GHz channel.
- Stop downloads, uploads, backups, and other competing traffic.
- Lower stream quality or resolution temporarily.
- Check Steam’s performance statistics to separate network, host-encode, and client-decode symptoms.
- Test a different client device.
Remote Play cannot eliminate latency: input must travel to the host, the host must run and encode the game, and the client must decode and display it. The game itself and the display pipeline also affect how noticeable the delay feels.
Controller input does not work
- Pair or plug the controller into the client device.
- Check the game’s Full or Partial Controller Support label.
- Launch the game through Steam and verify that the Steam overlay is available.
- Try a different controller or connection method.
- For non-Steam games and independent launchers, expect that controller and overlay behavior may be limited and require additional configuration.
The Remote Play Together invitation is missing
- Confirm that the game supports Remote Play Together.
- Launch the game before sending the invitation.
- Open the Steam overlay and use the friend’s context menu.
- Confirm that the friend is signed in on a supported device.
- Check account, friend, privacy, and communication restrictions.
Steam’s friend documentation notes that limited accounts cannot send friend invitations, although they can receive them. That restriction is separate from whether the game supports Remote Play Together.
Audio is missing or channels are wrong
- Check the client and game volume.
- Review Steam’s Remote Play audio and speaker configuration.
- On Linux or macOS clients, manually select the correct stereo or surround layout if necessary.
- For TV surround playback, verify the HDMI connection and six-channel PCM compatibility of the client, TV, or receiver.
Remote Play limitations to understand before you start
- The host PC must remain available to run the game; this is not cloud gaming.
- Remote Play Together is limited to games that support the feature.
- Performance depends on the host, client, game, local network, internet path, and display—not just your internet download speed.
- A controller that works on one client or game may not work identically on another.
- Remote Play support labels indicate intended compatibility, not guaranteed lag-free play.
- Device support, minimum operating systems, feature labels, and Steam interface wording can change over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Steam Remote Play cloud gaming?
No. Steam Remote Play streams a game from your own computer. The host PC must be powered on, connected to the network, signed in to Steam, and able to run the game.
Do friends need to own the game for Remote Play Together?
Usually, only the host needs to own and install the game. The title must support Remote Play Together, and it must be compatible with local multiplayer, co-op, shared-screen, or split-screen play.
Does Steam Remote Play require Ethernet?
Yes, Remote Play can work over Wi-Fi, but Valve recommends Ethernet for the host and compatible client because it is generally more stable and less affected by interference. A strong 5 GHz connection is the preferred wireless alternative.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I know if a Steam game supports Remote Play?
The game should identify Remote Play Together on its Steam store page. Device-oriented Remote Play labels can separately indicate whether streaming to phones, tablets, TVs, or Steam Link clients is intended.
The Bottom Line
To use Steam Remote Play, keep the game installed and running-capable on a powered-on Steam host, pair a Steam Link client or second PC, connect the controller to that client, and start the game from the host’s Library. For friends, launch a compatible local multiplayer game and invite them with Remote Play Together from the Steam overlay. Ethernet on the host and, when possible, the client is the most reliable way to reduce stutter, but no setup can guarantee zero latency.
