The Bow works best when you keep your charge moving: aim and charge, fire, follow with Power Shot when it is safe, then use Charging Sidestep to evade and reposition without giving up your rhythm. Keep enough stamina in reserve to dodge, and use attacks at their effective distance. The button inputs below are PS5 defaults; confirm bindings and current move details in your platform settings and the in-game Hunter’s Notes.
Bow controls: the default PS5 inputs
These are the PS5 defaults listed by the GameConductor Bow controls guide. Xbox uses corresponding buttons; Steam controls depend on keyboard and mouse settings. Your bindings may differ, so check the controls for your platform and the Hunter’s Notes. Capcom’s official manual entry point links to the game manuals.

A beginner’s firing loop
- Aim and charge. Point at a useful monster part and hold the fire input to build charge.
- Fire, then assess. Release to shoot. Add Power Shot if the monster is not about to retaliate.
- Move with Charging Sidestep. Use it to avoid an attack and reposition while maintaining the Bow’s charge rhythm.
- Extend only when safe. Power Volley adds another committed attack. Use it only when the opening allows it and you have stamina left for your next evasive move.
- Time Discerning Dodge. The Title Update 4 guide says a successful Discerning Dodge preserves charge and restores stamina and Trick Arrow Gauge. Treat it as a timed response to an incoming attack, not a reason to spend stamina recklessly.
Bow has no guard action, and its firing and movement rhythm uses substantial stamina. If an attack is coming, evade rather than finishing a combo. The RedGauge Bow guide, which covers Title Update 4, describes stamina management and the fight loop; move performance can change with updates.
Choose attacks by distance and opening
Bow attacks are not interchangeable: each has a different effective-distance band, and physical shot damage drops when you are too close or too far. Watch the effective-distance indicator and choose a move that fits the opening as well as your position.
#1 Best Overall
- Wild New Adventure – Monster Hunter Wilds follows the story of a special Research Commission investigating the Forbidden Lands. Fully voiced for the first time in the series, the hunter is joined in their journey by a colorful cast of characters, including a Palico partner, Guild-appointed Handler Alma, trusty smithy Gemma, and the mysterious child Nata. Together, the team ventures into an unexplored new frontier where surprises await around every corner.
- A Living World – The Forbidden Lands spans multiple biomes with dynamic identities, such as the Windward Plains and Scarlet Forest, where the ecosystems shift between vibrant seasons brimming with life, and unforgiving climates where monsters fight over limited resources. Changes in the landscape will impact the creatures that live there and push hunters to adapt as well.
- New Monsters and Wildlife – Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of new creatures, ranging from herds of small species to large monsters – some of which roam the Forbidden Lands in packs. Every creature hunters encounter in the wild has carved out a special place in its habitat and possesses unique attacks and behaviors.
- Players can also now ride atop the Seikret, an agile new mount enabling hunters to traverse difficult terrain, perform actions like sharpening weapons on the move, and switch between two weapons while out on hunts!
- Evolved Hunting Action – The series’ acclaimed action-packed gameplay is back and more exciting than ever! Hunters can look forward to tracking down monsters with an array of new moves, special abilities, equipment, and more. The action also now flows seamlessly from cutscenes to gameplay, resulting in a new level of immersion.
| Move | Distance guidance | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Thousand Dragons | Very close range | Use only when you can safely close in. |
| Regular shots and Power Shots | Fairly close range | Keep a workable distance instead of firing from far away. |
| Level-2 charged shot | Mid-range | Useful when you can maintain that distance. |
| Dragon Piercer | Long range | Choose it when distance and the opening suit the attack. |
These distance descriptions come from the GameConductor guide; the Title Update 4 guide also warns that physical shot damage falls outside the effective band. Check the current in-game indicator rather than treating the descriptions as exact measurements.
Manage coatings, Trick Arrow Gauge, and Tracer
In the Title Update 4 guide, coatings use Trick Arrow Gauge rather than pouch items. Attacks and a successful Discerning Dodge refill the gauge. Each bow supports a particular set of coatings, so check the equipped bow’s list instead of assuming every coating is available.

- Hunt giant nature-infused bests – Survive their attacks, learn from their behaviors, and use your Karakuri and your weapons in combination to cut these creatures down to size.
- Craft your hunting grounds – You are the only one in Azuma able to wield the Karakuri technology.
- Hunt in a pack, or be a lone wolf – In WILD HEARTS you can face the Kemono alone or unite with up to two friends (or other players) to stalk and hunt your prey.
- Gear up to hunt, hunt to gear up – Create your character, then gather materials from each hunt and build an array of armor and weapons.
- Power coating: choose it for its physical-damage benefit.
- Close-range coating: consider it when you can remain in its shorter range band.
- Status coatings: repeated hits build the named status.
Tracer spends the same gauge. It marks a monster part and guides Bow attacks toward it, which can help keep shots on a moving target; it does not make that part a better hitzone. Your decision is whether a coating’s damage or status value now is worth more than using Tracer to steer later arrows toward a useful part. The Title Update 4 guide describes these resource mechanics; recheck them after major updates.
Use Focus Strike: Arrow Rain on wounds deliberately
Bow’s Focus Strike is called Arrow Rain. The Title Update 4 guide says it locks onto wounds and turns them into a burst of tracking arrows. Destroying a wound gives an immediate burst, while leaving it available can preserve later Weakness Exploit benefits. Choose based on the current opportunity: take the burst when immediate damage matters, or leave the wound for continued targeting when that is more valuable. The details are guide recommendations, so check the current in-game move text.

How to keep charge without losing your escape
- Use Charging Sidestep to combine repositioning with charge maintenance.
- Take Power Shot and Power Volley only when the monster’s recovery gives you time to finish and move again.
- Keep stamina available for an evasion; do not spend the full bar extending a combo.
- When distance is wrong, reposition rather than repeatedly firing from outside a move’s effective range.
- Use Discerning Dodge when you can time it against an incoming attack; the Title Update 4 guide says success preserves charge and restores stamina and Trick Arrow Gauge.
Exact inputs and move behavior are patch-sensitive. GameConductor lists its controls guide as updated 2026-09-29, and RedGauge identifies its Bow strategy coverage as Title Update 4. Confirm current controls in the Hunter’s Notes and platform settings.
