Unlock the Pal Labor Research Laboratory in the Technology menu, build it within a Palbox area, then choose a research subject and node. Assign a Pal whose matching work suitability meets the node’s required level; research progresses toward persistent base benefits when complete.
Unlock and build the laboratory
Palworld’s 1.0 structure record lists the Pal Labor Research Laboratory at Technology level 19, costing two Technology Points to unlock. The listed build recipe is 30 Ingots and 30 Paldium Fragments per laboratory, and it must be placed inside a Palbox area. Its listed build work is 5,000. These figures come from the Palworld Wiki’s 1.0 structure data record: Pal Labor Research Laboratory.
Older guides give a level-20 unlock and a recipe of 10 Ingots plus 10 Paldium Fragments. Those values conflict with the 1.0 record and should be treated as historical; check the Technology menu in your installed version before collecting materials, since balance or version differences may change the displayed requirements.
Start a research project
- Interact with the laboratory. Select the research subject that matches the type of base work you want to improve.
- Choose an available node. Nodes sit in subject-specific branches. If a node is below another in its branch, complete the preceding node first. Check the selected node’s displayed materials and workload before starting; exact node costs can vary by choice and are not established here.
- Assign an eligible Pal. The Pal needs matching work suitability at least as high as the node’s required research level. For example, a Pal with Handiwork level 2 cannot work on a Handiwork node requiring level 3.
- Allow the project to finish. Once complete, the research reward is applied; Pocketpair describes the laboratory’s research rewards as permanent passives and rewards that increase base productivity, including some work-speed buildings. See the Feybreak update notice (December 22, 2024).
Choose a research subject
There is no universally best first branch. Pick according to the work your base depends on, the reward offered by the node, the materials you can spend, and the prerequisites it opens. Research subjects correspond to work types including Handiwork, Kindling, Mining, Watering, Cooling, Planting, Lumbering, Electricity generation, and Medicine Production.

- Start with a bottleneck: If one type of base work is limiting your output, inspect that subject’s available nodes first.
- Compare the node before committing: Weigh its benefit and material requirement against the next node it unlocks.
- Match the worker to the node: Check the required suitability level shown for that specific research rather than assigning a Pal based only on its species or general usefulness at the base.
Can multiple laboratories research at once?
Available guides describe one active research node shared across laboratories, with additional labs allowing more Pals to contribute to the same project. That supports shared progress, not a reliable claim that separate labs can run independent projects in parallel. The current speed benefit and exact behavior are not firmly established, so confirm what the in-game interface does before building extras solely to accelerate research.
