Use it over USB with a data-capable USB-C cable, or use Bluetooth if the controller was converted before Google’s official conversion deadline of December 31, 2024. The conversion tool is no longer an option for controllers that missed that deadline.
For the broadest compatibility, connect the controller and configure it through Steam Input. This separates the three issues that are often confused: whether the controller connects to the computer, whether Steam or a launcher detects it, and whether a particular game supports the resulting gamepad input.

Before you start: check the controller’s Bluetooth status
Google’s Stadia Bluetooth conversion was a one-way firmware change. It disabled the controller’s original Stadia Wi-Fi functionality, and the official conversion deadline was December 31, 2024. Google no longer offers that conversion process or ongoing controller updates. See Google’s Stadia Controller support page.

A controller that was never converted can still be used over USB. A controller that was converted can be used over USB or Bluetooth Low Energy.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
To check its status, connect the controller to a computer with a USB cable, open Google Chrome, and visit stadia.google.com/controller. The page may identify the controller’s current mode, but checking the mode is not the same as converting it. If the controller missed the 2024 deadline, do not expect the official site to activate Bluetooth.
Use the Stadia Controller over USB
USB is the simplest option and the fallback for every Stadia Controller, regardless of Bluetooth status.
What you need
- The Stadia Controller.
- A USB-C cable that supports data transfer, not charging only.
- A compatible USB port on the computer.
- A game or launcher with controller support.
A charge-only cable can make the controller appear dead or prevent Windows from detecting it. If possible, use the original cable or another cable known to transfer data.
Connection steps
- Plug the USB-C cable into the controller and connect it directly to the PC.
- Press and hold the Stadia button until the controller powers on.
- Wait for Windows to detect the device.
- Open Steam or your game launcher.
- Start the game and check its controller settings.
The controller should appear as a gamepad, although the exact name and input API can vary. Steam Input can provide a more compatible Xbox-style interface to games that do not recognize the controller directly.
If USB does not work
- Replace the cable with a confirmed data cable.
- Try another USB port, preferably one directly on the computer.
- Remove any USB hub from the setup while testing.
- Restart Steam after connecting the controller.
- Test the controller in Windows’ game-controller settings.
- Temporarily close other controller-remapping utilities.
- Try a different game to determine whether the problem is hardware-specific or game-specific.
If the controller appears frozen, unplug it and hold the Stadia button for about 10 seconds, then try the connection again. Google documents this as a reset procedure.
Pair a Stadia Controller that already has Bluetooth mode
Wireless use requires both a controller that was converted before the deadline and a computer with a compatible Bluetooth Low Energy adapter. Bluetooth pairing by itself does not guarantee that every game will recognize the controller.

- Turn off the controller by holding the Stadia button.
- Turn it on while holding the Stadia button until the status light pulses orange.
- If the orange pairing light does not appear, hold the Stadia button and Y together for approximately two seconds.
- Open the computer’s Bluetooth settings.
- Select the device whose name contains “Stadia.”
- Approve the pairing request if Windows displays one.
A solid white status light indicates that the controller is connected. If pairing fails, remove the old “Stadia” entry from Bluetooth settings, turn the controller off and on again, and retry. Temporarily disconnecting other Bluetooth controllers and rebooting the PC can also help isolate interference or adapter problems.

Configure the Stadia Controller in Steam
Steam is usually the best route for PC gaming because Steam Input can translate controller input and, on Windows, provide games with an emulated Xbox controller interface. Valve describes this behavior in its Steam Input documentation.
- Connect the controller by USB or Bluetooth.
- Open Steam and confirm that it detects the controller.
- Open the game’s controller settings or Steam Input configuration.
- Enable or configure Steam Input for the game.
- Choose a gamepad layout, a community layout, or create a custom layout.
- Test both sticks, the triggers, the D-pad, face buttons, menu buttons, and rumble.
Steam’s labels and menu locations can change between client versions, so look for the game’s controller configuration and Steam Input controls rather than relying on an old menu path.
Why the game shows Xbox button prompts
This is normal when Steam Input presents the Stadia Controller as an Xbox-style gamepad. The physical button labels may not match the prompts shown on screen. Translate the prompts by button position, or use a custom layout if the default arrangement is uncomfortable. Most games will not display Stadia-specific prompts.

Games outside Steam are less predictable. Some Windows games expect an Xbox-style XInput controller and may ignore a generic or DirectInput-style device even when Windows can see it.

The best first workaround is to add the game’s launcher or executable to Steam as a non-Steam game:
- Use Steam’s option to add a non-Steam game.
- Add the launcher or game executable.
- Connect the Stadia Controller.
- Configure Steam Input for that Steam entry.
- Launch the game through Steam and test the controls.
This is not guaranteed to work with every launcher, game, or anti-cheat system. Avoid making unofficial driver hacks, DLL injection, or third-party XInput wrappers the default solution; they can be game-dependent and may conflict with anti-cheat software.
What works on each platform?
| Platform or use case | Expected support | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows with Steam | Best-supported PC route | Use Steam Input when a game does not recognize it directly. |
| Windows with non-Steam games | Variable | Try the game’s native support or add it to Steam. |
| macOS with Steam | Documented by Google | Compatibility still varies by game. |
| ChromeOS | Listed by Google | Individual games and services may behave differently. |
| Linux | Possible | Some systems may need Google’s udev rules for detection or updates. |
| Steam Deck | Reasonable to try | Use Steam or Bluetooth if the controller was already converted; verify behavior on the specific SteamOS setup. |
| Cloud gaming | Variable | The browser and cloud service impose their own controller requirements. |
Google’s documented testing included Windows 10 and 11 with Steam, macOS 13 with Steam, ChromeOS, and Android. Google also cautions that compatibility with other services and platforms was not substantially tested. The controller supports USB-C and Bluetooth Low Energy, according to its official specifications.
Linux note
Many Linux installations may work without additional configuration. If the controller is not detected, consult the udev rules on Google’s support page and install them through your distribution’s normal udev configuration process. Reload udev or reboot after making the change. Do not assume the rules are required on every distribution.
Features that no longer work as they did on Stadia
- Stadia streaming: Stadia shut down on January 18, 2023.
- Original Stadia Wi-Fi mode: It is not a general PC wireless mode.
- Bluetooth conversion: The official conversion deadline has passed, and the change was permanent.
- Assistant and Capture buttons: They no longer open Google Assistant or capture Stadia clips.
- Headphones over Bluetooth: Wired headphones connected to the controller do not work through the controller in Bluetooth mode. Connect headphones to the computer instead.
- Vibration: Rumble is not guaranteed across operating systems, games, connection types, and remapping layers.
- Firmware updates: Google is no longer providing ongoing controller updates.
When connected by USB, headphone behavior is different from Bluetooth mode, but game and operating-system support can still vary.

The Google controller website does not detect it
Try a data-capable USB cable, another USB port, and a direct connection without a hub. Make sure the controller is powered on. On Linux, missing permissions or udev rules may prevent detection. If the controller was already converted, the site will not perform a second conversion.

Windows sees it, but the game does not
- Confirm that Steam or the launcher detects it.
- Enable Steam Input.
- Restart the game after connecting the controller.
- Launch the game through Steam.
- Close competing controller utilities.
- Try USB instead of Bluetooth.
- Check whether the game requires XInput.
This usually indicates a game-recognition or input-mode problem rather than a failed Bluetooth connection.

Bluetooth connects but the controls do not work
Test Steam Input first, then compare the result with a USB connection. If another game works, the original game or launcher is likely imposing a different controller requirement.
Vibration does not work
Do not treat missing rumble as proof that the controller is defective. Try USB, native game support instead of a remapped layout, another controller-compatible game, and Steam Input’s rumble settings. Google explicitly warns that haptics may not work on all systems.
The controller keeps disconnecting
Charge it, remove and re-pair it, test without other Bluetooth controllers, and move the Bluetooth adapter closer to the controller. A short USB extension can help position a desktop adapter away from interference. If wireless remains unreliable, use USB.
Should you keep the Stadia Controller or replace it?
Keep it if you already own it, it works reliably over USB or Bluetooth, and you mainly play Steam games. Steam Input can address many compatibility problems without requiring a new controller.
Use USB when the controller was never converted, your PC lacks dependable Bluetooth Low Energy, a game behaves poorly wirelessly, or you want the simplest troubleshooting path.
Consider replacing it if you need wireless play but missed the Bluetooth conversion deadline, mainly play non-Steam games that require native XInput, need consistently supported rumble or headset audio, or have a failing battery or USB port.
A standard Xbox Wireless Controller is the most straightforward replacement for Windows users who want familiar Xbox prompts and broad native compatibility. Xbox’s U.S. listings place standard models roughly in the $64.99–$69.99 range, depending on color and bundle; verify the current price before buying. An Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 adds customization and premium controls, but its approximately $199.99 price makes sense only if those features are important—not merely as a Stadia replacement.
