The supported way to use a Steam Deck as a controller for another PC is Steam Remote Play through Steam Link. The PC runs the game, while the Deck receives its video and audio and sends its controls back over the network. The Deck does not normally pair with Windows, Linux, or macOS as a generic Bluetooth or USB gamepad.

What you need

  • A Steam Deck with SteamOS and the Steam client working normally.
  • A host PC with Steam installed, running, and signed in.
  • The game installed on the host PC and launchable through Steam.
  • Steam Remote Play enabled on the host.
  • Both devices connected to the same home network. Steam Support recommends the same router for discovery.

Remote Play is a streaming connection, not a conventional controller cable. The host PC renders the game, streams the picture and sound to the Deck, and receives the Deck’s input in return. Valve describes the interaction as occurring within milliseconds, but actual latency depends on Wi-Fi, Ethernet, interference, encoding, decoding, and the game.

Enable Remote Play on the PC

  1. Open Steam on the host PC and sign in.
  2. Open Steam’s settings.
  3. Open Remote Play. Older Steam versions may call this In-Home Streaming.
  4. Enable Remote Play.
  5. Leave Steam running and prevent the PC from going to sleep during the session.

If the computer does not appear on the Deck, make sure Steam is signed in, Remote Play remains enabled, and the host firewall allows Steam. Guest Wi-Fi, wireless-client isolation, and VPN software can prevent local discovery.

Connect the Steam Deck

  1. Connect the Deck to the same network as the host PC.
  2. Open Steam Link on the Deck, or start a Remote Play session from the Deck’s Steam interface.
  3. Select the host PC when it appears.
  4. Complete the pairing or authorization prompt if Steam displays one.
  5. Start the connection and launch the game from the Remote Play interface.

SteamOS and Steam client navigation can change between releases, so the exact location of the Steam Link shortcut may differ. The important distinction is that the Deck must connect as the Remote Play client; simply docking it or plugging it into the PC does not create a controller connection.

Make the Deck controls work

If the game displays correctly but ignores the controls, open the Steam Link settings and check:

Settings → Streaming → Advanced Options → Input Streaming → Enabled

Then disconnect and reconnect the session. Also check that the game has focus, that it was launched through Steam, and that another controller or remapping utility is not taking control of the input.

Steam Input lets the Deck do much more than a standard gamepad. Depending on the game and layout, you can assign:

  • Gamepad buttons, sticks, triggers, and D-pad commands.
  • Keyboard keys and mouse clicks.
  • Trackpads as mouse surfaces, virtual buttons, or radial menus.
  • Gyro aiming for fine camera control.
  • Rear grip buttons for keyboard commands or frequently used actions.
  • Touchscreen actions and separate action layers for aiming, driving, inventory, or map screens.

Start with the game’s default or official Steam Input layout. Use Edit Layout to add missing actions, map rear buttons to commands you use often, and test the layout in a safe area before playing. Steam Input supports major PC input paths including XInput, Raw Input, DirectInput, and Steam Input, but the game and launch method determine which mappings actually work.

Network settings and latency

For the most responsive connection, connect the host PC to the router with Ethernet and use a strong 5-GHz or newer Wi-Fi connection for the Deck. Keep both devices near the access point, avoid guest networks, and close bandwidth-heavy applications.

If video stutters or controls feel delayed, reduce Remote Play’s stream quality or bandwidth, move closer to the router, and test another game. Turn-based games, RPGs, strategy games, couch co-op, and most single-player games generally tolerate streaming delay better than competitive shooters, rhythm games, or other latency-sensitive titles.

Using non-Steam games

Steam games are the most dependable use case because Steam can launch the game and apply a Steam Input configuration. For a non-Steam game:

  1. Add the game or its launcher to Steam on the host PC.
  2. Launch it from the Steam library rather than from a desktop shortcut.
  3. Check whether Steam Overlay and Steam Input are active.
  4. If the game ignores the controller, try a keyboard-and-mouse layout.
  5. Test whether a launcher opening in a separate window or an anti-cheat system is interfering.

Adding an executable to Steam does not guarantee that every launcher, anti-cheat system, or externally started game will work correctly. Steam Link can also stream desktop applications, but controlling a desktop with a Deck is less precise than using a real mouse and keyboard.

Common problems and fixes

The host PC does not appear

  1. Confirm both devices are connected to the same home network and router.
  2. Temporarily disable a VPN and try again.
  3. Restart Steam on the PC.
  4. Re-enable Remote Play in Steam’s settings.
  5. Restart Steam Link on the Deck.
  6. Allow Steam through the host PC’s firewall.
  7. Check that the PC is awake.

Do not leave the firewall disabled. If disabling it is used as a short diagnostic test, turn it back on and create an appropriate Steam exception afterward.

The Deck connects, but there is no input

Confirm Steam Link → Settings → Streaming → Advanced Options → Input Streaming → Enabled. Then reconnect, make sure the game is focused, inspect the active controller layout in the Steam overlay, and test a game known to support controller input.

The game shows keyboard prompts

The selected layout may be emulating keyboard and mouse, or the game may be detecting DirectInput rather than an XInput-style controller. Try the game’s default controller layout and then an XInput-style layout if one is available. Prompt icons may change when you switch layouts.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Video works, but controls are delayed

Use Ethernet for the host, improve the Deck’s Wi-Fi signal, reduce stream quality, close other network-heavy programs, and test another game. If only one title is affected, its input or launcher configuration may be the problem rather than the network.

The session disconnects or the Deck sleeps

Long sessions can be interrupted by low battery, sleep behavior, or power-management settings. Keep the Deck charged and review the current SteamOS display and power settings. Menu names may differ by SteamOS release.

Can you connect the Deck directly by Bluetooth or USB?

Do not assume so. Valve’s documented method for using the Deck as an external PC controller is Remote Play. The official documentation does not establish a normal procedure that makes the Deck’s built-in controls appear to another computer as a generic Bluetooth gamepad or ordinary XInput device over USB-C.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth and USB-C can connect peripherals to the Deck, and a dock can provide display, Ethernet, and USB-hub functions. Neither ordinary Bluetooth pairing, a USB-C cable, nor a docking station should be treated as a native “Deck controller over USB” mode.

Steam Deck Remote Play vs. a normal controller

Requirement Steam Deck via Remote Play Normal USB/Bluetooth controller
Trackpads and gyro Yes Depends on the controller
Requires host Steam and a network Yes Usually no
Lowest latency No; streaming adds delay Usually better
Keyboard and mouse emulation Yes, through Steam Input Sometimes
Works outside Steam Inconsistent Usually better
Extra purchase No if you already own a Deck Yes
Battery use Uses the Deck’s battery Uses its own battery or a cable

If you already own a Deck, Remote Play is worth trying. If you need reliable native control outside Steam or the lowest possible latency, a standard wired or Bluetooth controller is the simpler choice.

Alternatives

  • Play locally on the Deck: This avoids network latency and host-PC setup, although performance and compatibility may differ from the PC version.
  • Use a normal controller: Best for competitive games, non-Steam software, and launcher setups that do not cooperate with Remote Play.
  • Use a dock or USB-C hub: Helpful for Ethernet, charging, external displays, and peripherals, but it does not unlock a controller mode.
  • Use third-party USB-over-network software: Tools such as VirtualHere may appeal to enthusiasts, but they are separate from Valve’s supported Remote Play method and can require additional setup, Desktop Mode, or paid software. Compatibility depends on the exact software versions.
