NHL 94: 2024 Edition by Adam Catalyst is a fan-made ROM hack of EA’s Sega Genesis/Mega Drive NHL ’94. Released in December 2023 for the 2023–24 season, it adds modern teams, players, artwork, arenas, ratings, and gameplay adjustments while retaining the original game’s 16-bit engine and fast arcade-style structure.
Despite the informal “NHL ’24” nickname, this is not EA Sports’ commercial NHL 24, nor is it a port of EA’s modern hockey technology. It is a substantial community modification of NHL ’94.

What is the NHL ’24 ROM hack?
The project’s formal title is NHL 94: 2024 Edition by Adam Catalyst. It uses the Genesis/Mega Drive version of NHL ’94 as its foundation and updates it for the 2023–24 NHL season.
Adam Catalyst is credited with the project, but the release is also the product of the wider NHL ’94 modding community, whose contributors worked on graphics, ratings, gameplay logic, goalie controls, sprites, tools, and bug fixes.

That distinction matters. The hack does not rebuild NHL ’94 from scratch or replace its engine. Its appeal is that it pushes the original game unusually far while preserving the familiar Genesis gameplay.
More than a roster update
The most important thing to understand is the project’s scope. This is not simply a file containing new player names and teams.
- Teams and rosters: Contemporary NHL teams—including newer franchises such as the Vegas Golden Knights—receive updated identities, lines, players, and ratings.
- Player presentation: Player photos, portraits, and other team-specific graphics are refreshed.
- Team artwork: Logos, banners, arena names, menus, and scoreboards are redesigned for the modern season.
- Rink detail: The project revises rink elements, audience details, benches, glass, stanchions, and related presentation graphics.
- Sprites and equipment: Player sprites, sticks, gloves, boots, helmets, and tape receive new artwork.
- Color palette: A new global palette is intended to better reflect current team colors.
- Animation details: Scorekeepers, penalty-box players, and the Zamboni driver are redrawn.
The result remains recognizably NHL ’94, but it presents the game as a modern-season edition rather than an untouched 1990s cartridge.

The redesigned Zamboni driver is a small but revealing example of the project’s approach. The sprite was redrawn to fit the rink’s sideboard perspective more convincingly. That same visual pass included changes to the scorekeepers and penalty-box player, along with many smaller arena and animation refinements.
It is exactly the kind of detail a roster-only hack would leave untouched. Here, the creators revisited the visual language around the game—not just the data inside it.
Gameplay changes in the 2024 Edition
The project documentation describes several changes intended to rebalance the original game and make its behavior feel more contemporary. These are creator-authored design choices, not an official simulation of real-world NHL statistics.

- Hall Effect Joystick Update.
- Compatible with Switch/Switch 2, Windows, Apple, Android, Steam Deck, and Raspberry Pi.
- Compatible with iPhone, iPad, macOS and Apple TV now. (Officially Supported)
- Full-featured retro controller- clickable joysticks, rumble vibration, motion controls, wireless Bluetooth, rechargeable battery, home and screenshot Buttons and a USB-C connector
- Perfect classic d-pad.
- Six-button goalie control: A goalie can be controlled immediately with the Y button on a six-button controller.
- Goalie movement: Goalies move slightly farther toward center ice when they do not have the puck.
- Puck-holding time: Goalies can hold the puck slightly longer before play is stopped.
- Checking and penalties: Checking and aggressiveness effects are reduced to limit some penalty-heavy outcomes.
- Rating variance: Hot-and-cold effects are reduced.
- Scoring area: The effective scoring area in the net is slightly smaller, making posts more likely.
- Speed bursts: The player speed burst is reduced to approximately 25% of its original value.
- Stamina: Custom depletion and recovery rates are used.
- Bug fix: A weight/checking bug is addressed.
The six-button feature is especially useful for players who want more direct defensive control. It also means that a standard three-button controller cannot provide the same input path.

How realistic are the player ratings?
The ratings are community-created approximations rather than official NHL data or an independently audited simulation. The project builds on the NHL ’94 community’s expanded rating work, including a 16-point rating system and contemporary season information. Related documentation describes hundreds of players being evaluated using season data and analytics.
That makes the 2024 Edition more current than the original cartridge, but “realistic” should be understood as the creators’ and community’s interpretation of player performance—not an objective measurement or licensed roster database.
How to play it legally
The usual workflow requires a legally obtained copy or personal dump of the Genesis/Mega Drive version of NHL ’94, plus the correct community patch. The underlying commercial game should not be downloaded from an unauthorized ROM site.
- Use a clean personal dump of the Genesis/Mega Drive cartridge you own.
- Obtain the 2024 Edition patch and release instructions from the project forum thread.
- Apply the documented
.bpspatch with a compatible utility such as Rom Patcher JS. - Load the resulting image in a compatible Genesis emulator, or use suitable flash hardware if you want to play on original-style hardware.
Do not patch an already patched image. A patch can fail if the base ROM is from the wrong region, has been modified, is incomplete, or is not the version expected by the release.

Emulator and hardware compatibility
The project documentation reports testing with Genesis Plus 1.7.4.15 and Genesis Plus GX 1.7.5-RC1 r24-10-2021. That is useful guidance, but it is not a guarantee that every emulator, frontend, flash cartridge, or hardware clone will behave identically.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
For software play, a compatible Genesis emulator is the simplest route. Frontends such as RetroArch can be useful, but users still need to supply their own legally obtained game image and configure the appropriate Genesis core and controller mapping.
On original hardware, a compatible Genesis/Mega Drive flash cartridge may be able to run the patched image. Compatibility depends on the cartridge, console region, ROM format, and the specific image. The same caution applies to cartridge-capable devices such as the RetroN 5: a general backup or cartridge workflow is not a guarantee that this particular hack will work without configuration.
A six-button Genesis-style controller is required to use the new immediate goalie-control feature. Verify that the controller and adapter expose the expected Y-button mapping.

The patch refuses to apply
Check that the base game is the Genesis/Mega Drive edition, that your personal dump is clean, and that you are using the patch format and region specified by the release thread. Make sure you are not applying the patch to a previously patched file.
The game boots with graphical corruption
Try the resulting image in Genesis Plus or Genesis Plus GX, disable unusual emulator enhancements, and recopy the file. If the release provides a checksum or expected file information, compare it with your output. Problems on flash hardware may not indicate a problem with the emulator image; region behavior, transfer errors, and device compatibility can all matter.
Six-button goalie control does nothing
Confirm that the emulator or console is configured for a six-button controller and that the Y button is mapped correctly. A three-button controller cannot offer the same control input.

User records are incorrect
The release notes document a specific issue involving saved user records and the Vegas, Washington, and Winnipeg teams. Main Menu and Player Cards may not display saved records correctly, and records can store incorrect data for those teams. This is a known limitation, not evidence that every team’s save data is broken.
Is it still worth playing?
Yes, if you want modern teams and a heavily refreshed presentation inside the classic NHL ’94 formula. The project keeps the compact matches, familiar controls, and arcade immediacy of the Genesis game while adding a large amount of new art, roster work, and balancing.
No, if you expect EA’s modern NHL 24. This hack does not provide modern physics, franchise modes, online play, contemporary presentation technology, or a current 2026 roster. Its teams and player data belong to the 2023–24 season, and later community editions have followed it.
For current projects, the NHL ’94 community and its forum are better places to look than treating the 2024 Edition as the latest release.
The bigger story: a living 16-bit modding community
The 2024 Edition demonstrates why NHL ’94 remains such a productive platform for fan work. Years of shared editing tools, rating methods, gameplay research, graphics work, and ROM-hacking knowledge make it possible to maintain a 1990s sports game long after its official release cycle ended.
