Windows 11 can use the dedicated Share button on the newer Xbox Wireless Controller to capture screenshots and gameplay clips through Xbox Game Bar. Tap the button once for a screenshot; hold it briefly to start recording a video clip.

This is established functionality that first rolled out on September 30, 2021, during the Windows 11 Insider/Beta build 22000.194 era—not a new August 2026 feature. The original rollout details are documented by Neowin.

What the Xbox Share button does on Windows 11

Action Result
Tap Share once Take a screenshot
Hold Share briefly Record a video clip
Use a remapped Share button Perform the action assigned in Xbox Accessories

Microsoft describes holding the button for “a couple seconds” to begin recording. It does not define a guaranteed exact duration. The feature is provided through Xbox Game Bar, Windows 11’s built-in gaming overlay.

This is separate from the controller’s Xbox button. The Xbox button can open Game Bar or a controller interface depending on configuration, while the smaller Share button is intended for screenshots and recordings.

Which Xbox controller supports it?

You need the newer Xbox Wireless Controller introduced for Xbox Series X|S, identifiable by its dedicated Share button between the View and Menu buttons. Older Xbox One controllers generally do not have the same button, and third-party controllers may expose capture controls differently or not integrate with Windows Game Bar at all.

The controller can connect by USB cable, Bluetooth, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows where supported. Firmware can affect how features work, so update the controller with the Xbox Accessories app if necessary. The app can also remap the Share button, which means a button that no longer captures may simply have been assigned another action.

Windows 11 requirements and the original rollout

The first reported Windows 11 rollout was associated with Insider/Beta build 22000.194 in 2021. That build is historical context, not a confirmed current minimum requirement. Microsoft’s available material does not establish a definitive minimum Windows 11 build for 2026.

On a current PC, the practical requirements are:

  • An updated Windows 11 installation.
  • An Xbox Wireless Controller with the dedicated Share button.
  • Xbox Game Bar installed and enabled.
  • Current controller firmware.
  • A game or application that permits capture.

How to enable and use Share-button capture

  1. Update Windows 11. Install available Windows updates before troubleshooting capture.
  2. Connect the controller. For the simplest first test, use a USB cable. Bluetooth and Xbox Wireless are also supported connection methods where available.
  3. Update the controller. Open Xbox Accessories and install any offered firmware update.
  4. Enable Xbox Game Bar. Open Windows Settings and search for Xbox Game Bar or Game Bar. Settings labels can move between Windows releases, so the search box is more reliable than an old fixed menu path.
  5. Launch the game. Game Bar must be able to recognize the game or application.
  6. Take a screenshot. Tap the Share button once.
  7. Record a clip. Hold the Share button briefly.
  8. Check the capture folder. Open VideosCaptures in your Windows user folder.

If you need to change capture settings, press Win + G to open Game Bar. Standard keyboard alternatives include Win + Alt + PrtScn for a screenshot, Win + Alt + R to start or stop recording, and Win + Alt + G to save the configured replay of recent gameplay. These are the normal defaults and can vary with Windows or Game Bar configuration.

Where Windows saves screenshots and recordings

The normal local destination for Game Bar captures is:

VideosCaptures

Screenshots are typically saved as PNG files and recordings as MP4 files. Treat this as the default rather than an absolute rule: check Game Bar’s capture settings if files are not appearing there. These are PC captures, not the separate capture library created on an Xbox console.

If the Share button does nothing

Work through these checks in order:

  1. Test with USB. A wired connection removes Bluetooth pairing, wireless-adapter, and some power-management variables.
  2. Check Xbox Accessories. Confirm that the controller appears correctly, install firmware updates, and verify that Share has not been remapped.
  3. Open Game Bar with Win + G. If Game Bar itself will not open, fix that issue before diagnosing the controller button.
  4. Confirm capture is enabled. Use Windows Settings search for Xbox Game Bar or Game Bar and review the capture options.
  5. Try another game or application. Some games, protected video services, and other applications can block or restrict recording. Microsoft support guidance notes that capture availability can depend on the relevant app’s gaming features.
  6. Check whether Windows detects Share separately. The Share button can fail while ordinary controller buttons continue to work. Windows controller-testing tools may show it independently from standard XInput controls; a Microsoft support discussion documents this type of failure.
  7. Repair Game Bar. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Xbox Game Bar > Advanced options, then choose Repair. If that does not help, try Reset. Exact labels can differ between Windows 11 releases.
  8. Use keyboard shortcuts. If keyboard capture works but Share does not, the problem is likely with the controller, its firmware, remapping, or connection rather than the capture system itself.

For additional context on Game Bar capture restrictions and failures, see Microsoft’s support discussion and the discussion about controller button detection.

Share-button remapping can change the default behavior

The Xbox Accessories app supports Share-button remapping. Depending on the controller and configuration, the button can be assigned actions such as opening the friends list, opening achievements, or muting the TV. If screenshots and recordings stopped working after customization, restore the default Share assignment before replacing hardware or reinstalling software.

Does it work in every game?

No. The Share button does not guarantee capture in every game or application. Protected video content may block screenshots or recordings, and some games disable or restrict capture. Desktop capture can also behave differently from game capture.

Game Bar alternatives

Xbox Game Bar is the simplest option for this controller because the Share button is integrated with it. It is built into Windows and provides screenshots, clips, widgets, and Xbox-related features, but it can conflict with other overlays or fail in protected applications.

NVIDIA’s app or overlay and AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition can provide GPU-focused recording and performance controls. They are separate capture systems and do not automatically reproduce the same native Share-button workflow.

It introduces powerful new features such as gyro settings, stick curve adjustments, and button-to-mouse mapping, giving you deeper customization and more control than ever before.

OBS Studio is better suited to streamers and advanced recording setups, with scenes, sources, and detailed audio controls. It is considerably more complex than Game Bar for someone who only wants a screenshot. Steam’s screenshot tools are convenient for Steam games but are not a universal Windows capture replacement.

Should you buy an Xbox controller just for this?

Usually, no. The Share button is a convenience, not a unique capture technology. Windows keyboard shortcuts and existing GPU capture tools can already take screenshots and record clips.

The newer Xbox Wireless Controller makes more sense if you also want an Xbox-style layout, wireless Windows play, Xbox console compatibility, Xbox Accessories support, and a physical capture button. If you already own a working controller, buying another one solely for screenshots is difficult to justify.

If Bluetooth is unreliable or unavailable, the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is an option for compatible controllers, but it adds another device and connection variable. The official Xbox Wireless Controller is the straightforward choice for someone who wants both PC and Xbox compatibility.
