You can connect two controllers to one PS4, but for two people to play together, assign the second controller to a different local user or guest. Pair the controller by USB, press its PS button, then choose a user when prompted. The game must support local multiplayer.
Connect the second controller to your PS4
- Turn on the PS4.
- Connect the second DUALSHOCK 4 controller to the console with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button on the second controller. The console pairs it and displays a user-selection screen. PlayStation’s DUALSHOCK 4 support instructions explain pairing; its PS4 user guidance describes selecting a user for a controller.
- For two-player local play, select a different existing user for the second controller, or choose New User and play as a guest if appropriate.
- After pairing, disconnect the cable to use the controller wirelessly. Make sure it has enough charge.
- Open a game that supports local multiplayer and follow its on-screen instructions for joining.
What “one account” can mean
One PS4 console
Two controllers can connect to the same PS4. PlayStation states that up to four controllers can be connected to one console. That is a console limit, not a promise that every game supports four players—or even local multiplayer.

One user selected for both controllers
When a controller connects, the PS4 asks which user should operate it. For two people to provide separate player input in a supported local multiplayer game, assign the second controller to a different local user or a guest. PlayStation’s guidance does not establish that assigning both controllers to the same user makes them two independent players.

Primary PS4 setting
Activating a PS4 as an account’s primary console is separate from connecting controllers. It does not pair a controller; pairing is done with the USB cable and PS button. PlayStation says each account can activate one PS4 as its primary console. See PlayStation’s primary PS4 activation guide.

If the second controller will not connect or join
- It does not pair: Connect it to the PS4 with a USB cable and press the PS button again. If pairing still fails, PlayStation’s controller support page advises resetting the controller and links to repair support.
- It connects but cannot join the game: Check that it was assigned to a different user or guest, then confirm the game supports local multiplayer and follow its join instructions.
