After you connect, the remote machine holds the source tree, runs terminals and language services, installs the VS Code Server, and executes builds, tests, game-server tools, and debuggers. Your computer mainly displays the editor and forwards input through an authenticated SSH tunnel.
The reliable method is straightforward: prepare a supported Linux VPS and SSH account, prove that ordinary SSH works, connect with Remote-SSH: Connect to Host…, open the remote folder, and install project dependencies on the VPS. What Remote-SSH changes in a VPS workflow
Visual Studio Code’s Remote – SSH extension opens a folder on a remote machine, virtual machine, or container that has a running SSH server. It installs a VS Code Server on the remote operating system. The local VS Code window remains your interface, but commands and most extensions run on the VPS.
- Files: Your project folder is on the VPS; it does not need to be copied to your laptop.
- Terminal: A terminal opened from VS Code executes on the VPS.
- Language services and debugging: Compilers, interpreters, linters, language servers, and debuggers run against the remote filesystem and remote runtimes.
- Editor: The local window renders the interface and sends operations over SSH.
This arrangement is useful for a game project, modding tool, or dedicated-server codebase when the VPS has the required runtime and you want repeatable builds in the same Linux environment that will run the service. Microsoft describes the extension as providing the full VS Code feature set without requiring source code on the local machine.

Check the VPS before installing anything
Operating-system and runtime requirements
Current Microsoft Linux prerequisites require a glibc-based distribution with these baseline components:

Package names differ by distribution, so use your distribution’s package manager to install missing shell, archive, and download tools. Alpine Linux is not supported as a Remote-SSH host. Alpine remains usable for Dev Containers and WSL, but that is a different connection model.

SSH access and account details
Record the VPS public address or DNS name, the Linux username, the SSH port, and the cloud firewall or security-group rule that permits your client address. The account must have a home directory and permission to create the VS Code Server files and your project files. If the VPS uses a nonstandard SSH port, you can place that port in your SSH configuration or specify it when connecting.
Architecture considerations
Remote-SSH can connect to supported ARM Linux hosts, but individual extensions may contain x86-native binaries and fail on ARM. Check the architecture of every extension your project depends on, especially tools that bundle compilers, debuggers, emulators, or game-development binaries. A successful SSH connection does not guarantee that every extension supports the remote CPU architecture.
Prepare key-based SSH authentication
Password authentication works, but Microsoft recommends keys for convenience and security. Remote-SSH does not save your passwords or alternate authentication tokens, so a key avoids repeated prompts without placing a reusable password in the extension.

Create an Ed25519 key
- On your local computer, open a terminal.
- Run
ssh-keygen -t ed25519. Accept the default file location or choose a dedicated key, and protect it with a passphrase. - Add the resulting public-key text to the VPS account’s
~/.ssh/authorized_keys. Use your provider’s console or an existing administrative session if you cannot log in yet. - Set restrictive permissions on the SSH directory, the authorized-keys file, and your private key. OpenSSH can reject keys when these paths are writable by other users.
RSA 4096 is a fallback for a legacy SSH system that cannot accept Ed25519. Prefer Ed25519 when both the client and server support it.
Test plain SSH first
Before opening VS Code, run:
ssh user@hostnameReplace user and hostname with the exact values you intend to use in VS Code. If the service listens on another port, test that same port with your SSH client’s option or an SSH configuration entry. Confirm that you reach a shell prompt on the VPS, then exit.
This test isolates the network and account. A timeout normally points to DNS, routing, a local or VPS firewall, a cloud security-group rule, or an incorrect port—not to an editor problem. Fix those conditions before proceeding.
Install and connect with Remote-SSH
Install the local components
- Install the current desktop version of Visual Studio Code on your local computer.
- Verify that an OpenSSH-compatible client is available locally.
- Install the Remote – SSH extension from the VS Code Extensions view.
The extension is installed locally. The matching VS Code Server is installed later on the VPS.
Add the VPS connection
- Open the Command Palette.
- Run Remote-SSH: Connect to Host….
- Enter the same
user@hostnamevalue that succeeded in your terminal test, or choose an existing SSH configuration entry. - If VS Code asks which platform the host uses, select Linux. Automatic detection normally handles this, but an explicit selection resolves many first-connection failures.
- Accept the host-key prompt only after checking that the address and fingerprint belong to your VPS.
VS Code opens a new remote window and starts installing the VS Code Server. Follow progress in the Remote – SSH output channel. The first connection can take longer because the server package must be downloaded, transferred or unpacked, and started.

Open the project on the VPS
- In the connected window, choose File > Open… to open a folder, or File > Open Workspace… for a saved workspace.
- Select the project directory on the VPS, not a similarly named local directory.
- Wait for indexing to finish before judging language-service performance.
The remote indicator in the lower-left corner identifies the connected host. Opening a new local window does not disconnect the VPS session; it simply returns you to a local context.
Know where code, commands, and extensions run
Use Terminal > New Terminal in the connected window and run a command that identifies the remote system. The shell prompt, working directory, installed runtimes, and environment variables should match the VPS.
Install project runtimes, package managers, dependencies, linters, debuggers, and build tools on the VPS. Installing a compiler or package locally does not make it available to the remote terminal. Likewise, a language extension may have a local user-interface component and a remote component; VS Code indicates where an extension is installed and may prompt you to install it in the remote environment.
Run and Debug controls also target the remote project. Build outputs, generated files, caches, and logs are created on the VPS unless a tool is deliberately configured to write elsewhere. This is why no source synchronization step is needed for the normal Remote-SSH workflow.

Network access required for installation and extensions
The initial server setup needs HTTPS access from the local machine to update.code.visualstudio.com and vscode.download.prss.microsoft.com. Depending on how downloads are configured, the remote host may also need outbound access to those endpoints. Installing extensions through the user interface can require marketplace.visualstudio.com and *.gallerycdn.vsassets.io.

These are outbound connections; they are separate from the inbound SSH rule that lets your computer reach the VPS. A restrictive VPS egress policy can therefore allow SSH while still preventing server installation.
When the VPS cannot download the server
If the remote host has no permitted route to the download endpoints, set the VS Code setting remote.SSH.localServerDownload so the client downloads the server locally and transfers it to the VPS. This still requires the SSH session to remain usable and the remote account to have enough disk space and permission to unpack the files.
Secure the connection and the host
After setup, client-server communication travels through an authenticated, secure SSH tunnel. Protect the VPS itself with a current operating-system security policy, a narrow inbound SSH rule, and key management appropriate to the people who administer it.
Use keys and verify host identity
Keys avoid password storage in the extension, but a private key should still be protected with a passphrase and an appropriate local agent. Treat an unexpected host-key change as a security event: verify the VPS identity through your hosting console or administrator before accepting a replacement key.
Consider socket mode on shared hosts
For multi-user Linux or macOS SSH hosts, Microsoft documents the optional Remote.SSH: Remote Server Listen On Socket setting as a security improvement. Enable it when its isolation benefits fit your host’s user and permission model, and test the connection with the same account that will use the workspace.

Troubleshoot failures in a fixed order
1. The connection times out
- Run
ssh user@hostnameoutside VS Code. - Check DNS resolution and the VPS public address.
- Verify the SSH daemon is running and listening on the expected port.
- Review the VPS firewall and cloud security-group rule for your client IP.
- Check local network egress rules, VPN routing, and whether the VPS was stopped or reassigned.
Do not reinstall the extension until ordinary SSH succeeds.
2. Authentication fails
- Confirm the username; logging in as an administrator account is not equivalent to logging in as the project owner.
- Ensure the public key is in that account’s
authorized_keys, not another user’s file. - Check ownership and permissions on the home directory,
~/.ssh, andauthorized_keys. - Run SSH in a terminal with verbose diagnostics if the client appears to choose the wrong key.
3. VS Code chooses the wrong platform or cannot start the server
Open the Remote – SSH output channel and inspect the first error. Explicitly select Linux when prompted. Then verify /bin/bash, tar, and either curl or wget exist on the VPS. Compare the host’s kernel, glibc, and libstdc++ versions with the current prerequisite values, paying particular attention to the glibc 2.28 requirement introduced for prebuilt servers in VS Code 1.99.
4. The server download fails
Test outbound HTTPS from the VPS and from the local machine according to your organization’s proxy policy. Allow the documented Visual Studio Code download endpoints, or configure remote.SSH.localServerDownload to transfer a client-downloaded copy. A successful SSH login alone does not prove that either endpoint is reachable.
5. The server starts but extensions fail
- Check whether the extension was installed in the remote context.
- Confirm that the VPS architecture is supported; ARM hosts can reject extensions containing x86-native binaries.
- Check RAM and CPU pressure. The documented minimum is 1 GB RAM, while 2 GB and two cores are recommended for a smoother session.
- Review the extension’s own output channel for missing system libraries or runtime versions.
6. An error reports bad permissions
Inspect permissions on the SSH key files, the remote home directory, and the project path. Correct ownership and remove group or world write access where OpenSSH requires strict permissions. Reconnect after making the change so VS Code retries with a clean session.
Remote-SSH versus file-mount and synchronization tools
Remote-SSH is an interactive remote-execution model, not a general-purpose file synchronizer. Choose the workflow that matches the task:

Do not mount a remote folder merely to make local tools appear remote. If builds and debugging must execute on the VPS, connect with Remote-SSH and install those tools in the VPS environment.
A VPS decision checklist for remote development
Before provisioning or migrating a VPS, evaluate these six axes:

- Ed25519 key authentication works with
ssh user@hostname. - The host meets kernel 4.18+, glibc 2.28+, and libstdc++ 3.4.25+ guidance.
/bin/bash,tar, andcurlorwgetare installed.- Outbound HTTPS policy permits the Visual Studio Code download endpoints, or local server download is configured.
- Remote – SSH is installed locally and the Linux platform is selected.
- The remote folder is opened from the connected window.

- A new integrated terminal confirms that commands execute on the VPS.
