Run Watchtower as a Docker service next to the containers it manages, give it access to the Docker API, and configure exactly one update trigger: a polling interval or a six-field cron schedule. For production, combine an enable-label allow-list with monitor-only mode while you verify behavior, then enable restarts for services with a documented rollback plan.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click Docker, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
The safest rollout is deliberate: scope the containers, choose a maintenance window, observe one or more checks without changing anything, and enable image cleanup only after deciding how you will recover the previous version.

What Watchtower does when an image changes
Watchtower periodically asks the Docker daemon which images are available for the containers it is watching. When it detects a newer image, it carries out its documented replacement and restart behavior for eligible containers. It is an image-and-container automation service; it does not replace application-level deployment checks such as database migrations, configuration validation, or health testing.
Watchtower must be able to communicate with the Docker daemon used by the target containers. In a conventional single-host deployment, that means running Watchtower on the same Docker host and exposing the host’s Docker API through the deployment’s normal mechanism, commonly a mounted Unix socket. Follow your host’s security policy when granting that access because it gives the service control over Docker resources.

Every container is not necessarily a candidate. Watchtower can inspect a broad set of containers, or it can operate as an explicit allow-list. It can also check for updates and send notifications without changing a container, which is useful when a human must approve an upgrade.
Decide what should be updated before you deploy
Inventory the containers and their rollback needs
List the containers on the Docker host, the image each one uses, its data volumes, and the way you would return to the previous image. Separate stateless services from databases, queues, and other stateful workloads. A container that can be recreated quickly is a different operational decision from one whose upgrade could require a coordinated data or schema change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Identify the services that may be restarted automatically.
- Identify services that require a maintenance window or a human review.
- Record an image tag or digest, configuration source, and data-backup procedure for each critical service.
- Decide who will review notifications and logs after a scheduled run.
Choose an explicit targeting policy
For a small development host, watching all discovered containers may be acceptable. For production, use the enable-label allow-list. With --label-enable, or the equivalent WATCHTOWER_LABEL_ENABLE=true, Watchtower selects only containers carrying com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable=true. Add that label only after the service has an approved maintenance and rollback plan.
Separate observation from authorization
Monitor-only mode checks for newer images, sends notifications, and invokes configured pre- and post-update hooks, but does not perform the update. Use it for databases, stateful services, or images that require a compatibility check. It lets you confirm image discovery, timing, and notifications before allowing a restart.
Choose one way to schedule checks
Watchtower supports two mutually exclusive timing modes. Configure either a fixed polling interval or a six-field cron schedule; do not configure both.
| Timing mode | Flag | Environment variable | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed interval | --interval |
WATCHTOWER_POLL_INTERVAL |
Repeat a check after a consistent number of seconds. |
| Six-field cron | --schedule |
WATCHTOWER_SCHEDULE |
Run checks in a defined maintenance window. |
Use an interval for a simple cadence
The documented default poll interval is 86,400 seconds, or 24 hours. Set a different value when you want checks more or less frequently. For example, this command starts Watchtower with an hourly poll and an enable-label allow-list:

docker run -d --name watchtower --restart unless-stopped -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock containrrr/watchtower --label-enable --interval 3600
The command illustrates the timing choice: it supplies --interval 3600 and does not supply --schedule. Adapt the Docker API connection to the mechanism used by your host.
Use cron for a maintenance window
A schedule uses six cron fields. The official example 0 0 4 * * * runs daily at 04:00. The extra field compared with many traditional five-field cron examples is significant; copy the six-field form exactly.
docker run -d --name watchtower --restart unless-stopped -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -e WATCHTOWER_SCHEDULE='0 0 4 * * *' containrrr/watchtower --label-enable
If the window must follow a particular local timezone, set TZ in the Watchtower container. Otherwise, a schedule can run at a different clock time than the one operators expect because the container and the host may use different timezone settings.
docker run -d --name watchtower --restart unless-stopped -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -e WATCHTOWER_SCHEDULE='0 0 4 * * *' -e TZ='Europe/London' containrrr/watchtower --label-enable
Use one timing configuration in either command. Supplying both an interval and a schedule creates an ambiguous configuration and is contrary to the documented interface.

Label only approved services
Apply the enable label to the service definitions that have passed your maintenance review:
services:
web:

labels:
- 'com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable=true'
database:

With label-enforcement enabled, the web service is eligible and the database service is not. The example uses familiar images only to show placement of the label; choose image tags and data-management procedures appropriate to your applications.

Keep sensitive services in monitor-only mode
You can combine the allow-list with monitor-only behavior so that only labeled containers are checked, while no container is replaced automatically:
docker run -d --name watchtower --restart unless-stopped -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock containrrr/watchtower --label-enable --monitor-only --interval 3600
During this phase, review Watchtower’s output and notifications for the expected image changes. A notification without a restart is the intended result in monitor-only mode, not a failure.

Use different Watchtower instances only with a clear ownership model
If one host needs separate schedules or policies, document which Watchtower instance owns each container. Overlapping instances can both discover the same service and make troubleshooting harder. A simpler arrangement is one instance with labels, one timing mode, and an explicit exception list handled outside the automatic update path.
Understand replacement, restart, and no-restart behavior
When an eligible newer image is found and monitor-only mode is not enabled, Watchtower performs its documented update and restart workflow. Expect a brief service interruption unless the application and its surrounding architecture provide redundancy. Schedule checks when that interruption is acceptable and verify the service after the run.
What --no-restart changes
The --no-restart option changes the normal restart behavior. It can be useful when a separate process controls when a service is restarted, but it also changes the point at which the new image becomes active. Test this option with the exact image and orchestration arrangement used in production rather than assuming it behaves like a routine rolling deployment.
Watchtower’s self-update exception
Watchtower can encounter a special case when it updates its own container. Current documentation warns that combining --no-restart with --cleanup during a Watchtower self-update can leave a renamed Watchtower container running without starting a new one. Review this warning before using those two options together, and keep a manual recovery procedure for restoring the Watchtower service.

Decide whether to remove old images
--cleanup removes the old image after Watchtower restarts a container with a newer image. This limits accumulated image storage, but it also removes the immediately previous image from the local cache. Cleanup is therefore a storage policy and a rollback decision, not merely housekeeping.
Leave cleanup disabled while establishing confidence
During an initial rollout, keep the previous image available. If the new container fails a health check or exposes a compatibility problem, the old local image may be useful for a fast manual recovery. Confirm exactly which image reference and configuration produced the last known-good container.
Enable cleanup only after choosing another rollback path
Once you enable cleanup, retain a separate rollback method for important services. That may be an immutable image digest recorded in deployment configuration, a registry copy of the known-good image, or an operational backup that allows the container to be recreated. Watchtower does not turn cleanup into a version-history system; it removes the old local image after replacement.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.

The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
docker run -d --name watchtower --restart unless-stopped -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -e WATCHTOWER_SCHEDULE='0 0 4 * * *' -e TZ='UTC' containrrr/watchtower --label-enable
Change TZ to the timezone that defines your maintenance window. Do not add --interval or WATCHTOWER_POLL_INTERVAL to this deployment.
Observe first, then authorize
Start with the same target labels and schedule but add --monitor-only. After you have reviewed several checks and confirmed that notifications identify the intended services, remove monitor-only mode in a controlled change. Keep cleanup disabled until rollback is proven.

| Storage hygiene | --cleanup |
Remove the old image after replacement and restart, reducing local image retention. |
Roll out Watchtower step by step
- Confirm Docker API access. Run Watchtower on the intended Docker host and connect it through the host’s normal Docker API mechanism. Verify that the service can inspect the containers it is meant to manage.
- Label the approved set. Add
com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable=trueonly to services with a maintenance and rollback plan. If you are not using label enforcement, document why the broader scope is safe. - Select one timing mode. Use an interval for a repeating cadence or a six-field schedule for a fixed window. Configure only one of the two.
- Set the timezone when using cron. Define
TZso the scheduled hour matches the operators’ intended local time. - Start in monitor-only mode. Observe image checks, notifications, and hooks without changing containers. Confirm that the selected services and timing are correct.
- Approve the first update window. Remove monitor-only mode during a period when operators can watch logs and verify the application after its restart.
- Record the resulting image. Capture the new image reference and configuration so that a known-good state is identifiable.
- Decide on cleanup. Enable
--cleanuponly after a separate rollback method is available. Leave it off if immediate local rollback is more valuable than disk savings. - Review the self-update setting. If Watchtower itself is eligible for updates, do not combine
--no-restartand--cleanupwithout a tested recovery procedure.
Troubleshoot common outcomes
No update happens at the expected time
- Check that exactly one timing mode is configured. A schedule and interval should not be supplied together.
- For cron, verify all six fields and confirm that
TZrepresents the intended timezone. - Confirm that the image registry contains a newer image than the one currently used by the container.
- Check that Watchtower can reach the Docker API and inspect the target container.
The intended service is never selected
If label enforcement is active, inspect the container’s labels and ensure the key is exactly com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable with the value true. A service without that label is intentionally excluded.
A container is checked but not changed
Monitor-only mode is designed to produce this result. Remove --monitor-only only after the image and restart have been approved. Also check whether --no-restart is changing the expected activation behavior.
The previous image is unavailable
If cleanup was enabled, Watchtower may have removed the immediately previous local image after replacement. Recover using the separately retained image reference, registry copy, or other rollback method recorded for the service.
Watchtower stops after updating itself
Review whether --no-restart and --cleanup were enabled together. The documented self-update warning describes a renamed Watchtower container remaining without a newly started replacement. Use the manual recovery procedure for the host and revise those options before the next run.

Recommended defaults by environment
| Environment | Targeting | Action | Timing | Cleanup |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Development host | All discovered containers only when the host is disposable | Automatic updates can be acceptable | Interval chosen for the team’s workflow | Enable when local disk use is a concern and rollback is easy |
| Staging | Enable-label allow-list | Start monitor-only, then apply updates during a staffed window | Interval or a scheduled test window | Delay until the new image passes checks |
| Production | Enable-label allow-list with sensitive services excluded or monitored only | Apply only with an approved restart and rollback plan | Six-field cron schedule aligned with maintenance | Enable only after an independent rollback path is verified |
Bottom line
Watchtower is easiest to operate safely when its permissions and scope are narrow: give it the Docker API access it needs, select either an interval or a six-field cron schedule, and use enable labels as a production allow-list. Monitor-only mode provides a low-risk observation phase. Treat restarts, image cleanup, and Watchtower’s own self-update behavior as explicit operational choices, not defaults to enable blindly.
