A complete setup pairs WooCommerce with an LMS, a payment gateway, and a clearly defined access rule. The LMS holds courses, lessons, quizzes, and learner progress; WooCommerce takes payment and records the order; the integration turns a paid order into enrollment or download access.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
For a reliable launch, decide the entitlement first, then install the tools, build the learning material, map a product to it, and test every access state. The most important design rule is to let one system make the final access decision for each course. Running a direct product enrollment and a separate membership rule for the same course can produce contradictory results.

What WooCommerce does—and what an LMS must do
WooCommerce is designed to sell physical products, digital downloads, subscriptions, content, and appointments, according to its developer documentation. It provides the storefront, cart, checkout, payment processing through a gateway, order records, customer accounts, taxes and email triggers supplied by the extensions you install.
It does not, by itself, provide a course curriculum. An LMS supplies the instructional layer: course and lesson pages, quizzes, prerequisites, progress tracking, completion rules, and (when supported) certificates or reports. Sensei, for example, provides courses, lessons, and quizzes. Sensei Pro adds paid-course selling through WooCommerce. LearnDash is another LMS whose WooCommerce integration can enroll purchasers in courses or groups.

A typical paid-course architecture therefore contains four parts:
- WooCommerce: product catalog, cart, checkout, orders, refunds, and customer account records.
- LMS: course structure, lessons, quizzes, learner progress, and completion logic.
- Payment gateway: card, bank, wallet, or other payment authorization connected to WooCommerce.
- Access integration: the rule that changes a successful purchase into enrollment, membership access, or a permitted download.
Keep the responsibilities separate while making the hand-off explicit. A learner should be able to answer three questions from your site: what is being purchased, what access it grants, and when that access ends.

Choose what you are selling before installing extensions
The same course can be sold in several ways. Select the entitlement and billing behavior first; otherwise, product, membership, and LMS settings can overlap.
| Offer type | Payment cadence | Access behavior | Best fit | Decisions to make |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One-time course product | Single payment | Usually ongoing access unless your LMS or policy sets an end date | A self-paced course sold as a complete purchase | Whether refunds revoke enrollment, whether updates remain included, and whether the product is virtual, downloadable, or both |
| Recurring subscription | Automatic renewal at the interval configured in the subscription extension | Access follows an active subscription; cancellation or expiration must be mapped to your LMS rule | Monthly coaching, an ongoing course library, or continuously updated material | Grace periods, failed-payment handling, cancellation, renewal, and expiration behavior |
| Membership plan | Can be one-time or recurring, depending on the products used to grant the plan | One entitlement can govern several courses and other restricted site content | A learning community, course library, or tiered resource area | Which content is restricted, whether access drips over time, and whether purchase auto-enrolls the learner |
| Downloadable educational product | Usually a single payment, though it can be attached to a subscription or membership | Permission to download specified files from the order or account area | PDF workbooks, project files, templates, assets, or recorded lessons delivered as files | File protection, download limits, update policy, and whether a buyer also receives LMS enrollment |
Use a one-time product when the entitlement is simple
Choose a normal WooCommerce product when one purchase should unlock one course or one fixed bundle. This is the easiest model to explain at checkout and the easiest to reconcile with refunds. State whether access is lifetime, lasts for a defined period, or includes future revisions; do not leave that promise implied by the word “course.”
Use subscriptions when payment and access must recur
WooCommerce Subscriptions supplies recurring billing. Use it for an active-service model such as a monthly course library or continuing instructor support. Decide what happens after a failed renewal, a voluntary cancellation, a refund, and an expiration. The subscription status and the LMS enrollment status need a documented mapping so that a payment event cannot leave a learner with unintended access.

Use memberships when one entitlement covers a site area
WooCommerce Memberships can restrict posts, pages, and courses, drip content over time, and grant a membership plan after a product purchase. This model is appropriate when the learner is buying a tier rather than a single course—for example, a game-development academy with several tracks and member-only resources.

Sensei’s paid-course guide lists WooCommerce, Sensei LMS, Sensei Pro, and a payment gateway as prerequisites. Other LMS integrations have their own extension requirements, so verify compatibility for the exact WordPress and extension versions you operate.
- Prepare WordPress and accounts. Create administrator, instructor, and learner roles according to your operating needs. Use a staging site or test environment that mirrors production before changing access rules on a live school.
- Install WooCommerce. Complete the store address, currency, tax approach, email notifications, account creation, and checkout settings. Add at least one payment gateway and complete its verification or test-mode setup.
- Install the LMS. Choose the LMS whose authoring, reporting, certificates, group support, and existing WordPress compatibility match your course. Install its WooCommerce connector or the paid-course extension required by its documentation.
- Choose one access authority for each offer. Write down whether the LMS product link, a membership plan, or another integration owns enrollment. This decision prevents two rules from competing later.
- Set customer-account behavior. Requiring an account at checkout generally makes it possible to associate an order with an LMS learner. If guest checkout is enabled, confirm how the integration creates or links the learner account before launch.
Do not assume that installing an extension automatically creates a complete store. You still need a product, a payment path, an access rule, and a tested learner account.
Build the course in the LMS
Sensei workflow
In Sensei, create the course first, then add lessons and quizzes, arrange their order, and configure any prerequisites or completion conditions. Sensei is the documented course, lesson, and quiz layer; WooCommerce becomes the paid transaction layer through Sensei Pro.
Sensei’s course-editor Create Product flow can automatically create a WooCommerce product marked virtual and downloadable. Review the generated product before publishing: confirm its title, price, visibility, payment requirements, and the course it unlocks. If you create the product separately, use the integration’s product-link field rather than relying on a similar product name.

LearnDash workflow
LearnDash’s WooCommerce integration allows a product to be associated with courses and/or groups. The documented behavior is that a qualifying order status enrolls the purchaser in the mapped courses or groups. Use a group when several courses should be granted together or when group-level administration is part of your teaching model.
If you sell access through a WooCommerce subscription, configure and test what happens when that subscription expires. The LearnDash integration can regulate enrollment on expiration, but the exact status transitions depend on the extensions and payment gateway in your stack.
Make the learner promise visible
On the course page and product page, state the number and type of lessons, quiz requirements, prerequisites, included downloads, expected access duration, and support channel. Keep the product description and LMS welcome message consistent. A learner should not have to infer whether purchasing a PDF also enrolls them in the interactive course.
Create and connect the WooCommerce product
- Open the WooCommerce product editor, or use the LMS’s product-creation flow.
- Enter a product name that identifies the course or bundle unambiguously. Avoid multiple products with nearly identical names that could be mapped to different courses.
- Set the price and sale schedule, if applicable. For a subscription, configure the recurring amount and interval in the subscription extension rather than presenting a recurring promise on a normal product.
- Enable the Virtual setting when no physical shipment is required. Enable Downloadable only when the order includes files; attach the correct files and review their permission settings.
- Use the LMS integration field to select the course or group. If a membership plan is the authority, map the product to the plan instead of also attaching the same course through a direct LMS product rule.
- Publish the product and inspect its customer-facing page while logged out. Confirm that the price, billing cadence, included files, and access description match the checkout.
A virtual product does not automatically mean a learner is enrolled. Enrollment comes from the LMS connector, a membership rule, or another explicitly configured access action.
Configure a one-time paid course
For a single course with one payment, the simplest path is a normal WooCommerce product linked directly to the LMS course.

- Create and publish the course, lessons, quizzes, and prerequisites in the LMS.
- Create the virtual WooCommerce product and assign its price.
- Link the product to exactly one course or bundle rule in the LMS connector.
- Configure the payment gateway and ensure successful orders reach the status that the integration treats as paid.
- Place a test order with a dedicated learner account. Check the order status, confirmation email, account page, LMS enrollment, lesson visibility, and quiz access.
- Run a refund test in the staging environment and record whether the integration removes enrollment, leaves access in place, or requires a manual action. Publish a refund policy that matches the observed behavior.
If you promise permanent access, explain whether that includes newly added lessons and downloadable files. If access ends after a period, configure or document the end date rather than relying on an informal support process.
Configure recurring access with subscriptions
Recurring access has two separate concerns: collecting each payment and deciding whether the learner remains entitled to the course.
- Create the course and the recurring WooCommerce product.
- Set the billing interval, renewal behavior, and cancellation policy in the subscription extension.
- Map a successful initial purchase to enrollment.
- Map cancellation, expiration, refund, and failed-payment outcomes to the intended LMS access state. If your integration cannot perform a transition automatically, define a support procedure and disclose the timing to customers.
- Test the complete lifecycle with gateway test events or a staging configuration: initial payment, renewal, failed renewal, cancellation, expiration, and reactivation.
Do not describe a subscription as “lifetime access.” A subscription grants access while its entitlement is active unless you intentionally configure a different rule and communicate it clearly.

Build a membership that includes courses and site content
Memberships are useful when a purchase should unlock several courses, private posts, downloads, or a community area. WooCommerce Memberships supports restriction rules, content dripping, and granting access after a product purchase.
- Create a membership plan and name it by the learner-facing tier.
- Choose the product or products that grant the plan. Those products can be one-time purchases or recurring subscription products.
- Add restriction rules for the courses, lessons, pages, posts, and downloads included in the plan.
- Configure a drip schedule if lessons should appear progressively. State the schedule on the sales page so buyers understand that purchase does not necessarily reveal every lesson immediately.
- Enable auto-enrollment where the LMS integration supports it and where the plan should place the learner directly into a course.
- Test purchase, cancellation, expiration, refund, and plan switching with separate learner accounts.
Important: do not attach the same course directly to a product and also use a membership plan to control that course unless the integration documentation confirms the combined behavior you want. Sensei and WooCommerce Memberships documentation warn that overlapping rules can create access conflicts. Pick one authority for that course and remove the competing rule.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Deliver downloadable educational files safely
Educational products may be entirely file-based or may supplement an LMS course. Use WooCommerce’s downloadable-product settings for workbooks, project files, templates, recorded video files, or other assets.
- Label each file clearly and connect it to the correct product.
- Verify that the file is delivered through the customer’s order or account area rather than exposed as a public URL.
- Decide whether downloads expire, have a limit, or remain available while a membership or subscription is active.
- Explain file formats and approximate sizes before checkout so learners can prepare suitable storage and software.
- If a download is also meant to enroll a learner in an LMS course, test both permissions independently. A successful file download does not prove that LMS enrollment occurred.
For bundles, list every included course and file in the product description and maintain one documented mapping from the product to the entitlements. This makes refunds and support requests easier to resolve.

Both approaches support product-linked course sales, but the deciding factor is the learning workflow rather than the checkout itself.
| Decision area | Sensei-based stack | LearnDash-based stack |
|---|---|---|
| Core authoring | Courses, lessons, and quizzes are provided by Sensei LMS. | Courses and group structures are provided by LearnDash. |
| Paid-course connection | Sensei Pro enables selling courses through WooCommerce; its editor can create a linked virtual/downloadable product. | The WooCommerce integration associates products with courses and/or groups. |
| Bundles and cohorts | Use the product and membership capabilities available in the Sensei and WooCommerce extensions you install. | Map a product to a group when several courses should be granted together. |
| Subscription expiration | Confirm the behavior of your Sensei, subscription, and membership combination in staging. | The integration can regulate enrollment when a WooCommerce subscription expires; verify the exact status mapping in your version. |
| Membership access | WooCommerce Memberships can restrict and drip courses and can auto-enroll learners when configured. | Confirm compatibility between LearnDash groups, memberships, and any other access extension before using overlapping rules. |
| Selection criteria | Choose it when its course editor, quiz workflow, and WordPress stack fit your instructors. | Choose it when group enrollment, reporting, certificates, or existing LearnDash content are central requirements. |
Neither table column establishes a universal winner. Compare the authoring experience, reporting and certificate requirements, group administration, extension compatibility, and the number of systems that will participate in access decisions.
Test the entire purchase-to-learning lifecycle
Documentation establishes the available components, not the outcome of your particular theme, gateway, extensions, and customizations. Test on a staging or test environment before opening sales.
- Browse anonymously: confirm that a logged-out visitor can see the sales page but cannot open restricted lessons or protected files.
- Complete checkout: use a test gateway event or controlled payment. Verify currency, tax display, billing cadence, required account fields, and order confirmation.
- Check order status: confirm that the status recognized by the integration is reached after payment authorization.
- Check enrollment: sign in as the learner and verify the course appears in the LMS dashboard with the correct starting lesson and prerequisites.
- Check quizzes and downloads: open a lesson, submit a quiz, and download each included file. Confirm that unrelated courses remain locked.
- Check emails: review the order, account, enrollment, renewal, cancellation, and refund messages that your extensions generate.
- Test refund and cancellation: observe whether access is revoked, retained, or requires an administrator action, then align your policy and support script.
- Test expiration: for a subscription or timed membership, trigger expiration in staging and confirm both course and downloadable-content permissions.
- Repeat after updates: rerun the critical path after updating WooCommerce, the LMS, the connector, the membership or subscription extension, the payment gateway, or the theme.
Keep a short access matrix showing each product, its granting rule, the courses and files it unlocks, and the event that removes access. This is more dependable than relying on memory when you add a new bundle.

Troubleshoot common access failures
The customer paid but is not enrolled
- Confirm that the order reached the paid status expected by the LMS connector.
- Check that the product is mapped to the intended course or group, not merely named similarly.
- Verify that the buyer’s order email is connected to a WordPress learner account.
- Look for a second rule, such as a membership plan, that is overriding or delaying enrollment.
- After correcting the mapping, use the integration’s documented resync or manual enrollment process and record the action.
The learner can see a course that should be restricted
- Inspect direct LMS enrollment, membership-plan rules, and any administrator-granted access.
- Check whether a completed order or an old subscription remains active.
- Review cached pages and account sessions after changing permissions.
Access remains after cancellation or expiration
- Confirm which system owns revocation and whether the payment gateway sends the cancellation or expiration event.
- Check the subscription-to-LMS status mapping and any grace period.
- Remove duplicate membership or direct-product grants that can keep the learner enrolled.
A download works but the course is locked
File permission and LMS enrollment are separate entitlements. Check both mappings, then decide whether the product is intended to grant one or both. Update the product description if the original promise was ambiguous.
Two courses unlock from one product unexpectedly
Inspect product-to-course mappings, group assignments, membership restrictions, and bundle rules. Give each product a single documented entitlement set and remove accidental associations.
Quick Recap
Operational practices that keep the catalog understandable
- Use a naming convention that identifies the course, tier, and billing cadence in internal product records.
- Maintain a change log for price changes, new lessons, revised files, and access-rule edits.
- Give support staff a read-only access matrix and a procedure for correcting a paid-but-unenrolled learner.
- Keep staging test accounts for a one-time purchase, an active subscription, an expired subscription, and each membership tier.
- When adding a bundle, test that the new entitlement does not duplicate a direct course product or create a second access authority.
- State refund, cancellation, renewal, drip, and download terms before checkout rather than resolving those expectations in support tickets.
Practical launch checklist
- The course has published lessons, quizzes, prerequisites, and completion settings.
- The WooCommerce product has the correct price, billing cadence, virtual/downloadable settings, and mapped entitlement.
- The payment gateway has completed a successful test transaction.
- The learner account is created or linked as expected.
- Logged-out restrictions, enrollment, quizzes, downloads, and account pages behave correctly.
- Refund, cancellation, failed-payment, expiration, and reactivation outcomes are documented.
- Only one system controls access for each course or membership entitlement.
- Customer-facing copy matches the actual access duration, drip schedule, files, and support process.
