What does this pledge tier actually include?
A pledge level is the fixed reward bundle you select first. BackerKit defines it as “A fixed bundle backers pick first. It sets which rewards they get.” The bundle may contain a core rulebook, supplements, PDFs, access to a digital edition, dice, maps, miniatures, stretch-goal items, signed material or tier-exclusive bonuses. The exact contents are campaign-specific.

Do not assume that every reward pictured on a campaign page is included in every tier. Campaigns commonly show the full product line, unlocked stretch goals and optional purchases in the same visual area. Read the written contents for the specific tier and record each item before comparing prices.

Make a personal “wanted” list as well as an “included” list. A tier can contain more material but still be a poor choice if most of its contents are items you would not use. Conversely, a higher tier can be cheaper than buying a desired exclusive item separately, but only if the campaign permits that comparison and the additional shipping is acceptable.

Are add-ons included in the pledge price?
No. Add-ons are optional items purchased on top of the selected pledge. BackerKit describes them as “Extra items backers can buy on top of a pledge level while the campaign is live.” A campaign may display add-ons beside tier rewards, but a listed add-on price does not mean the item is included.
Separate the two inventories
- Pledge rewards: items automatically associated with the tier you select.
- Add-ons: optional books, PDFs, dice, miniatures, maps, apparel or other products that you explicitly add.
- Later charges: shipping, tax, VAT, duty or fulfillment fees that may be calculated after the campaign.
Write down the price and availability of every desired add-on. Check whether it can be purchased during the campaign, in a pledge manager, as a late pledge or only at retail. A campaign can change its late-purchase window or close an add-on before fulfillment, so do not treat a future purchase as guaranteed unless the campaign says it is available.
What will my total cost be after shipping and add-ons?
Use this as a planning formula:
Estimated delivered total = pledge tier + desired add-ons + shipping + applicable sales tax or VAT + disclosed import duty or other fulfillment charge.

If a figure is described as an estimate, label your own calculation as an estimate rather than a guaranteed total.

Do not call the pledge amount your delivered total unless the campaign explicitly says the relevant shipping and taxes are included. Leave room in your budget when shipping, duties or tax are still being calculated.

Will I pay shipping now or later?
Campaigns use different schedules. Shipping may be charged with the initial pledge, estimated during the campaign and finalized later, or collected through a pledge manager after the campaign. The campaign’s shipping section and FAQ should state which approach it uses.
Whole-order, weight-based shipping
BackerKit documents a method that calculates shipping from the combined weight of pledge rewards and add-ons. It is practical when the creator knows product weights and has shipping rates prepared. Under this model, a heavy supplement, boxed set or multiple-copy pledge can move the order into a higher shipping bracket even when the add-on itself is inexpensive.

Stackable shipping
Another documented method applies a base or flat rate to the pledge-level rewards and adds separate fees for add-ons. BackerKit gives examples such as a book that qualifies for media mail while a non-book item requires another service, or a poster that must ship separately in a tube. A modestly priced add-on can therefore have a significant shipping effect.
Questions to answer before selecting a tier
- Is any shipping amount already charged?
- Is the displayed shipping number final or an estimate?
- Are add-ons included in the same shipping calculation?
- Does a larger, heavier or differently packaged reward change the shipping class?
- Which countries and regions are covered, and are remote areas treated differently?
- Could the order be split into multiple shipments?
If the page does not answer these questions, contact the creator before pledging. Do not infer a universal surcharge from another RPG campaign: shipping depends on the products, destination, carrier and fulfillment plan.
Are VAT, sales tax, customs or duty included?
Tax handling is platform- and jurisdiction-dependent. Kickstarter’s published guidance says its Pledge Manager calculates applicable tax after the campaign based on shipping location and selected reward in supported jurisdictions, then collects and remits that tax there. Kickstarter also says its basic survey tool can collect addresses and simple information but cannot charge taxes or shipping or offer add-ons.

The same guidance distinguishes third-party pledge managers: the creator retains control of tax decisions and responsibility for compliance and remittance. Therefore, the presence of a pledge manager does not by itself tell you whether tax is included, collected later or payable to another authority.
BackerKit’s tax documentation says its tool can apply tax to pledge levels, add-ons and shipping. That describes a platform capability, not a tax result for every campaign or destination. Your campaign’s disclosure controls what you should expect.
Campaign examples show why the FAQ matters
Paizo’s Pathfinder Quest campaign FAQ stated that shipping, VAT and other applicable fees would be collected through BackerKit after the campaign when the games were ready to ship. A separate RPG campaign using BackerKit stated that shipping would be calculated at shipping time and that duty or VAT was excluded and remained the recipient’s responsibility. These are disclosures for those campaigns, not a universal RPG crowdfunding policy.
How to read the tax language
- “Included”: confirm whether the word covers both the pledge and add-ons, and whether it applies to your destination.
- “Collected later”: expect a separate charge in the pledge manager or fulfillment process.
- “Estimated”: treat the amount as changeable until the campaign provides a final calculation.
- “Recipient responsibility” or “duties unpaid”: budget for a possible charge from the carrier or customs authority.
- No statement: treat the item as unknown and ask the creator rather than assuming tax-free delivery.
Can I add or upgrade rewards in the pledge manager?
A pledge manager may collect reward selections, shipping details, payment information and add-on purchases after the campaign. BackerKit says its pledge manager can support these functions and late pledges. That does not guarantee that every campaign will enable every function.
BackerKit’s FAQ says backers may change or adjust a pledge level and add-ons before a campaign ends. After the campaign, changes or cancellations are at the creator’s discretion and may depend on the fulfillment stage. A planned late pledge or upgrade is therefore not a substitute for selecting the correct tier now.

Use this sequence when a campaign says a pledge manager will open
- Save the campaign’s stated survey or pledge-manager deadline.
- Read the notice that explains which rewards and add-ons are available after the campaign.
- Confirm whether an upgrade changes the reward bundle, shipping weight or tax calculation.
- Review the final order summary before submitting payment or address information.
- Keep the confirmation email and note any later date for address changes or additional charges.
Do not assume that a creator will reopen a closed survey, restore a sold-out exclusive or accept a cancellation after production begins. The project’s written deadlines and terms control.
How should I compare two or more pledge tiers?
Compare what you will use, not just the headline price. The worksheet below keeps included rewards and later charges separate.

When the campaign supplies prices, calculate the incremental cost of the higher tier against the price of buying only the additional items as add-ons. Include the higher tier’s shipping and tax effects in that comparison. Without campaign-specific prices and your own preferences, there is no universal “best value” tier.
A step-by-step method for choosing your pledge
- Capture the exact tier contents. Copy the written list of books, PDFs, formats, quantities, stretch goals and exclusive items into your notes.
- Mark your must-haves. Separate items you would definitely use from duplicates, speculative purchases and items included only because they are bundled.
- List add-ons separately. Record each desired add-on’s price, format, availability window and stated shipping treatment.
- Read shipping language. Identify whether the campaign uses a combined weight calculation, stackable charges, a flat rate, a later estimate or another method.
- Read tax and duty language. Note the destination rules, collection timing and any statement that the recipient remains responsible.
- Build a low and high estimate. The low figure can use the campaign’s current stated charges; the high figure should include disclosed uncertainty such as an estimated shipping increase or possible duty.
- Check the change window. Record the campaign end date, survey deadline and any stated limits on upgrades, cancellations or address changes.
- Ask before paying if a material detail is missing. Ask a specific question about your country, desired add-on and expected shipping method, then retain the answer.
- Choose the tier only after the delivered-cost check. If the uncertain amount would make the purchase uncomfortable, select a smaller tier or wait for a clearly documented late-pledge option rather than relying on an assumption.
Common add-on and fulfillment surprises
The “cheap” add-on that raises shipping
A poster, box, miniature case or other non-book item can require different packaging or a separate service. Under a stackable or weight-based model, its shipping effect may exceed its item price. Check the shipping class, not just the add-on line.

Adding a second book or a boxed component can move the whole order into a more expensive carrier bracket. Ask whether the campaign calculates shipping on the combined parcel and whether the displayed estimate already reflects the higher tier.

Tax collected after the campaign
A pledge can appear affordable because tax is not shown at checkout. If the campaign uses a post-campaign tax calculation, your payment request may arrive months later and be based on your then-selected rewards and shipping address.
Duty excluded from the campaign total
“Shipping included” does not necessarily mean import duty or local VAT is included. A statement that duty or VAT is the recipient’s responsibility means the carrier or customs authority may request payment before delivery.
Assuming the pledge manager guarantees an upgrade
Platform capability and campaign policy are different. A service may support upgrades generally while the creator limits a particular project’s inventory, deadlines or post-campaign changes.
Treating a campaign reward like a normal retail purchase
Kickstarter describes a pledge as a promise tied to creating the project, with purchases becoming final when the creator is ready to fulfill. BackerKit states that rewards are not guaranteed by the platform and that creators are expected to deliver them. Read the creator’s updates, fulfillment record and stated risks before committing, and allow for a longer wait than a standard retail order.
What to do when the campaign page is unclear
- Ask whether the listed pledge price includes shipping to your country.
- Ask whether add-ons use the same shipping charge or incur separate fees.
- Ask when sales tax or VAT is collected and who remits it.
- Ask whether customs duty is prepaid or payable on delivery.
- Ask whether your desired tier or add-on will remain available in the pledge manager.
- Ask for the deadline and policy for upgrades, cancellations and address changes.
Look for a written answer from the creator or an updated FAQ. If the answer remains uncertain, keep that uncertainty in your estimate instead of converting it into a confident number.
Platform fees versus your bill
BackerKit’s FAQ currently describes a 3.5% transaction fee on funds raised through its pledge manager for Kickstarter-launched campaigns, including add-ons, pre-orders, upgrades, shipping and taxes. It describes a 5% transaction fee for charges made in its manager for campaigns launched on BackerKit. These are platform-side creator fees, not amounts that should automatically be added to a backer’s bill. Only add a fee to your estimate when the campaign explicitly passes it on to backers. Platform pricing can change, so rely on the campaign’s current terms.
Final decision checklist
- I can list every reward included in my selected tier.
- I have separated included rewards from optional add-ons.
- I know whether shipping is charged now, later, separately or only estimated.
- I know how add-ons affect weight, packaging or shipping class.
- I know whether tax or VAT is included, collected later or left to me.
- I have checked the campaign’s statement about customs duty and import charges.
- I have calculated an estimated delivered total, not just the pledge price.
- I know the deadlines for upgrades, cancellations, surveys and address changes.
- I understand that delivery depends on the creator’s production and fulfillment process.
The safest pledge is the one you can afford after the campaign’s stated uncertainties are included. Select the bundle that contains your priorities, price add-ons as separate purchases, and treat every undisclosed future charge as a question to resolve before you commit.
