To use Xbox Remote Play, enable Remote Features on your Xbox, open Xbox.com/remoteplay on the device you want to use, sign in with the Microsoft account linked to your console, connect a controller, and select your Xbox.

Remote Play streams games from your own Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. It is different from Xbox Cloud Gaming, which runs supported games on Microsoft’s servers and generally requires a qualifying Game Pass plan.

What you need for Xbox Remote Play

  • An Xbox One, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X. The current Remote Play feature does not turn an Xbox 360 into a Remote Play source.
  • A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, signed in on both the console and destination device.
  • Remote Features enabled on the Xbox.
  • The game installed on the console and available to your account.
  • A compatible controller, normally paired with the phone, tablet, PC, TV, or headset.
  • A reliable internet connection. Xbox lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data and at least 10 Mbps download speed; its mobile guidance recommends 20 Mbps or more. These figures are not guarantees because latency, packet loss, interference, and network congestion also matter.

Xbox lists Remote Play support for Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Windows 10 and 11 PCs, supported Samsung and LG TVs, certain Amazon Fire TV devices, Meta Quest headsets, and other devices with a compatible browser. Individual models, browsers, regions, and account configurations may differ.

1. Enable Remote Features on your Xbox

  1. Turn on the Xbox and sign in with the account you plan to use remotely.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Find the section for Devices & connections or Remote features. The exact location and wording may vary by console update.
  4. Turn on Enable remote features.
  5. Run the console’s remote-features or Remote Play test if one is offered.
  6. Leave the console powered on or use its supported standby mode so it can remain reachable.

Xbox confirms that Remote Features must be enabled before the console can be accessed remotely. Some Xbox web flows may also let you configure the setting remotely, but enabling it directly on the console is the most dependable starting point.

2. Prepare the game

Remote Play streams games installed on the Xbox. Install the game locally and confirm that it launches before troubleshooting the remote connection.

  • For a digital game, the signed-in account must own it or have access through the console’s sharing or home-console arrangement.
  • For a disc-based game, the required disc may need to be in the Xbox.
  • Game Pass membership is not automatically required for every Remote Play session. What matters first is whether the game is installed and playable on your console.
  • Some games or online multiplayer modes may have separate subscription, account, or service requirements.

3. Start Remote Play

Phone or tablet

  1. Open a supported browser on your Android device, iPhone, or iPad.
  2. Go to Xbox.com/remoteplay.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox.
  4. Follow the prompts to select your console and begin the session.
  5. Connect your controller to the phone or tablet, usually over Bluetooth or USB.

Xbox’s mobile guidance also describes starting at Xbox.com/play, opening the menu, and switching to Remote Play. Use Xbox.com/remoteplay as the direct starting point because the web interface can change.

Windows PC

  1. Use a Windows 10 or 11 PC meeting Xbox’s stated requirements. Xbox’s PC app page lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later for the app route.
  2. Open a supported browser and visit Xbox.com/remoteplay.
  3. Sign in with the account linked to the console.
  4. Connect an Xbox controller or another supported controller.
  5. Select the Xbox and launch the installed game.

The Xbox PC app also supports remotely playing games installed on an Xbox, although the available controls and labels may change as Xbox updates its apps and web experience.

Supported TVs, Fire TV devices, and Meta Quest

On a supported smart TV, Fire TV device, or Meta Quest headset, open the Xbox experience or a compatible browser, sign in with the linked Microsoft account, connect a supported controller, and choose Remote Play when it is offered. Support is model- and region-dependent, so a device category listed by Xbox does not guarantee compatibility with every model.

4. Connect a controller

A standard Xbox Wireless Controller can generally connect to a compatible phone, tablet, or PC through Bluetooth. Put the controller into pairing mode, open the destination device’s Bluetooth settings, and select the controller. A wired USB connection is useful when Bluetooth pairing fails or the controller battery is low.

Phone-mounted or integrated mobile controllers are optional accessories. They do not replace the Xbox or its internet connection. Touch controls are available only in select games; do not assume every remotely played title supports touch input.

Remote Play vs. Xbox Cloud Gaming

Xbox Remote Play Xbox Cloud Gaming
Where the game runs Your Xbox console Microsoft’s cloud servers
Game availability Games installed on your console Supported games in the cloud catalog
Personal Xbox required Yes No personal console is required for supported devices
Game Pass required Not inherently for every Remote Play session Generally requires a qualifying Game Pass plan
Console online Yes Your personal console is not required
Best use Playing your own installed library away from the TV Playing supported games without installing them locally

Cloud-game availability depends on the title, region, plan, and platform. Remote Play is not a way to play Xbox games offline or without your own console connected to the internet.

Improve picture quality and reduce lag

  1. Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when the destination device is close enough to the router.
  2. Connect the Xbox to the router with Ethernet when possible.
  3. Avoid congested guest networks.
  4. Pause large downloads, video streams, and other heavy traffic.
  5. Move the phone, tablet, or PC closer to the Wi-Fi access point.
  6. Restart the router, Xbox, and destination device if the connection suddenly degrades.
  7. Test another network, such as a phone hotspot, to determine whether the home network is responsible.

A speed test does not measure every factor that affects Remote Play. High latency, jitter, packet loss, and wireless interference can cause delayed controls or stuttering even when download speed looks sufficient. Competitive shooters, rhythm games, racing games, and other timing-sensitive titles are especially sensitive to delay.

Mobile data can work when the signal is stable, but streaming may use substantial data and your carrier may charge for usage. Xbox recommends 20 Mbps or more for mobile gaming, while its Remote Play page lists 10 Mbps as a minimum figure.

Fix common Xbox Remote Play problems

Remote Play is missing

  1. Confirm that Remote Features are enabled on the Xbox.
  2. Check that the console is online and signed in.
  3. Sign out of the browser and back in with the account linked to the console.
  4. Open Xbox.com/remoteplay directly instead of using an old app shortcut.
  5. Update the browser and console, then restart both devices.

Older guides may tell you to start Remote Play inside the Xbox mobile app. Xbox moved Remote Play access toward the web, so the current app may direct you to Xbox.com/remoteplay rather than offering the complete streaming experience inside the app.

The console cannot be found

Make sure the Xbox is powered on or in a supported standby state, Remote Features are still enabled, the console has internet access, and the correct Microsoft account is being used. If you own or have access to multiple consoles, verify that you are selecting the intended one.

  • PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.

The stream is blurry, stutters, or disconnects

First improve the Wi-Fi position and switch to 5 GHz. Then use Ethernet for the Xbox, stop other network traffic, and restart the network equipment. If Remote Play works on your home network but fails away from home, router, NAT, firewall, or ISP restrictions may be involved. Faster download speed alone will not necessarily fix input lag.

The controller does not respond

  • Check that it is paired with the destination device, not still connected to the Xbox.
  • Replace or recharge the batteries.
  • Confirm Bluetooth is enabled and that another app is not capturing the controller.
  • Update the controller and destination device if updates are available.
  • Try a wired controller connection as a diagnostic step.

The game will not launch

Confirm that the title is installed, the account has access, and any required disc is in the console. The game may need an update, an online service may be unavailable, or a multiplayer mode may require a separate subscription. The Xbox can also be unavailable if another person is using it locally or through another remote session.

Subscription and access rules

Remote Play itself should not be described as universally requiring Game Pass. A subscription may instead matter because you want Xbox Cloud Gaming, access to a Game Pass catalog, or online multiplayer for a particular title. Requirements vary by game, region, account, and plan; check the game and Xbox service details if a launch or multiplayer prompt appears.
