Fortnite is already back on iPhone and iPad in most regions. Epic announced on May 19, 2026, that the game had returned to Apple’s App Store “around the world,” but Australia remained excluded. The earlier claim that Fortnite was returning to iOS without the App Store referred mainly to its August 2024 European Union launch through the Epic Games Store and AltStore PAL.
Where native installation is unavailable, cloud gaming may still be an option. Availability depends on your country, Apple Account region, device, operating-system version, and the distribution method you choose.

What changed?
The phrase “Fortnite is coming back to iOS, but not on the App Store” is now outdated unless it is specifically describing the European Union launch in 2024.
- App Store: Fortnite is available in most regions, according to Epic, but Australia is the stated exception.
- Epic Games Store: An alternative native installation route remains available in supported markets, including the EU and selected additional regions.
- AltStore PAL: An alternative route for eligible EU users.
- Cloud gaming: A possible fallback where native installation is unavailable and the relevant service supports Fortnite in that location.
Epic’s regional pages are not perfectly synchronized, so check the latest Epic installation guidance before attempting to install the game. A supported country does not automatically mean every iPhone or iPad is compatible.

The Fortnite-on-iOS timeline
- August 13, 2020: Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store after Epic enabled a direct-payment option that Apple said violated its developer agreement. Epic’s account of the dispute appears in its court filing.
- August 16, 2024: Fortnite returned to iOS for EU users through the Epic Games Store. Epic also identified AltStore PAL as a supported route.
- May 19, 2026: Epic announced that Fortnite was back on Apple’s App Store “around the world,” while specifically excluding Australia.
These were separate developments. The 2024 return demonstrated alternative app distribution in the EU; the 2026 announcement concerned Fortnite’s return to Apple’s App Store in most regions.
Where can you get Fortnite on iPhone or iPad?
| Situation | App Store | Epic Games Store | AltStore PAL | Cloud gaming |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Yes, according to Epic’s current materials | Not the normal iOS route | No general route | Possible where supported |
| European Union | Epic lists App Store access | Yes | Yes | Possible |
| Japan | Epic lists Fortnite availability | Epic lists iPhone availability | Not identified as the general route | Possible |
| Brazil | Epic lists Fortnite availability | Epic lists iPhone availability | Not identified as the general route | Possible |
| Australia | No App Store availability, according to Epic | Check Epic’s current regional page | Do not assume availability | Main practical fallback if supported |
| Other regions | Varies | Varies | Usually unavailable | Often the practical option |
“Worldwide” should therefore be read as Epic’s description of broad availability, not as a guarantee for every country. In particular, Epic’s announcement and support documentation identify Australia as an exception.
How to install Fortnite from the App Store
- Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad.
- Search for Fortnite and confirm that the listing is published through the official distribution channel.
- Tap Get or the download button.
- Open the game and sign in with your existing Epic Games account.
If Fortnite does not appear, check your Apple Account country or region, physical location, device model, and iOS or iPadOS version. Do not assume that changing your region will solve the problem; doing so can affect subscriptions, payment methods, account balances, and purchased content.

How to install it through the Epic Games Store
Use this route only if Epic’s current regional page says it is available where you live.
- Confirm that your iPhone runs iOS 17.6 or later, or that your iPad runs iPadOS 18 or later.
- Open Epic’s official iOS installation page.
- Follow Epic’s instructions to install the Epic Games Store marketplace.
- Open the Epic Games Store from your Home Screen.
- Select Fortnite, then tap Get.
- Sign in to the correct Epic Games account.
Epic describes the marketplace app as requiring approximately 25 MB. That is the size of the store app itself, not a complete storage estimate for Fortnite. The marketplace may also require extra permissions, confirmation screens, and separate update management compared with the App Store.

How to use AltStore PAL
AltStore PAL is an alternative marketplace route for eligible users in the European Union; it is not a general worldwide sideloading method.

What if native installation is unavailable?
Cloud gaming can let you play Fortnite through a supported browser or service without installing the native iOS version. Options may include Xbox Cloud Gaming, NVIDIA GeForce NOW, or Amazon Luna, depending on current regional support.
Cloud gaming is not identical to native installation. It requires a stable, low-latency internet connection, and the experience can vary with queues, service policies, browser support, touch controls, resolution, and available peripherals. Service plans and regional access change frequently, so check the provider’s current page before paying for a subscription. Fortnite itself is free-to-play, but a cloud service may have its own account or plan requirements.

- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Why was Fortnite removed from the App Store?
Epic objected to Apple’s App Store payment rules and commission structure. In August 2020, Epic added its own payment option to Fortnite, attempting to avoid Apple’s in-app-payment system. Apple treated that as a breach of the developer agreement and removed the game.
The dispute became a major fight over app-store control, payment rules, commissions, competition, and alternative distribution. Epic has characterized Apple’s conduct in strongly critical terms, but those advocacy claims should not be treated as universal legal findings in every jurisdiction. The fact that Fortnite has returned does not mean the broader disagreement over payments and alternative marketplaces has disappeared.
In the European Union, the Digital Markets Act led Apple to introduce alternative app distribution and related changes for qualifying apps. That regulatory environment enabled the 2024 EU return through marketplaces outside Apple’s App Store.
Accounts, progress, and gameplay
Epic says the mobile version supports the full Fortnite experience, cross-platform play, and cross-platform account progression. Sign in with the Epic Games account you already use on console, PC, or another device. Creating a second account can make your progress and purchases appear to be missing when you have simply signed into the wrong account.
Availability of Fortnite does not guarantee identical performance on every iPhone or iPad. Device compatibility, battery use, graphics quality, controller support, storage, and feature parity can vary. Do not confuse a marketplace’s minimum operating-system requirement with a promise of a particular frame rate or gameplay experience.

What happens if an EU user travels?
Epic’s 2024 EU announcement said that an EU resident who installed Fortnite through the Epic Games Store could continue playing outside the EU for up to 30 days, subject to Apple’s policies. That detail does not create worldwide eligibility for non-EU residents, and travel rules can change. Check Epic’s current documentation before relying on it.
Old iOS versions and unofficial downloads
The Fortnite build that existed before Apple’s 2020 removal is not a substitute for the current mobile game. Epic said the August 2020 version no longer worked on iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or Android.
Avoid random “Fortnite IPA” files, certificate services, fake download pages, and unofficial signing tools. They can expose your device or Epic account to malware and theft, rely on revoked certificates, stop working without warning, and fail to update. Epic says third-party software is not officially supported and should be used at the user’s own risk.
Quick fixes when Fortnite is missing
- No search result: Check your Apple Account region, physical location, device, and operating-system version.
- Installation blocked: Return to Epic’s current regional installation page rather than following an old workaround.
- Existing copy will not update: Open the marketplace that originally installed Fortnite and check there for an update.
- Progress has disappeared: Sign out and use the Epic Games account connected to your console or PC profile.
- You are in Australia: Do not expect native App Store access based on the 2026 “around the world” announcement. Check supported cloud options or wait for an official change.
- You are outside the EU: Do not assume AltStore PAL or the EU Epic installation flow applies to you.
The bottom line
Fortnite is no longer simply “coming back to iOS without the App Store.” As of August 16, 2026, Epic says it is back on Apple’s App Store in most regions, while Australia remains the prominent exception. EU users may still choose the Epic Games Store or AltStore PAL, and cloud gaming remains the main alternative where native installation is unavailable.
