How to Use Your Phone as a Handheld PC Gaming Device

By VGSources Team 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can turn an iPhone or Android phone into a handheld PC gaming device by streaming games from a computer. The computer runs the game, while the phone displays the video and audio and sends your controller or touchscreen input back to the PC. Your simplest starting point is Steam Link for games in your Steam library; Moonlight paired with a compatible host such as Sunshine provides a more configurable alternative.

For a convincing handheld setup, pair the phone with a compatible physical controller, begin on the same home network, and improve the network before attempting to play away from home. The phone is a client, not a replacement for the gaming PC: the computer must remain powered on, connected, and capable of running the game.

What you need

Before installing anything, check that you have the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A Windows, macOS, or Linux gaming computer that can run the games you want to play. The exact host operating-system support depends on the streaming method and its current documentation.
  • An iPhone or Android phone with enough free storage for the streaming app and a reliable Wi-Fi connection or mobile-data connection for remote use.
  • The game installed on the host computer. Steam Link is designed around a Steam library; Moonlight streams applications exposed by its compatible host software.
  • A home router. A strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) connection to the phone is recommended, and an Ethernet connection from the gaming PC to the router is preferable.
  • Optional: a phone-compatible gamepad or a telescopic mobile controller. Touch controls can work for menu-driven games, but most PC games are substantially easier with physical sticks, triggers, and buttons.

Streaming quality is determined by the complete path between the computer and phone. A powerful PC cannot compensate for a weak wireless signal, and a new router will not fix a host computer that is connected through a congested or unreliable link.

How PC game streaming works

The host computer renders each frame, compresses the video, and sends the resulting stream to the phone. The phone decodes that stream and shows it on its screen. Audio follows the same path. Inputs from a Bluetooth, USB, or mounted controller travel in the opposite direction to the PC, where the game receives them as ordinary gamepad commands.

This is different from installing a PC game on the phone. The phone does not need the PC game’s files, graphics hardware, or full desktop operating system. It does need a responsive connection: interruptions, interference, or an overloaded host can produce blocky video, dropped frames, delayed controls, or a disconnected session.

Choose a streaming method

Approach Best starting use Host requirement Controller and OS notes Remote-play considerations
Steam Link Games already in a Steam library Steam installed and running on the gaming PC Valve provides separate Android and Apple support paths; verify the current store listing and phone requirements Start on the same home network; internet play depends on the network and account setup
Moonlight with a compatible host such as Sunshine A configurable client/host arrangement, including applications outside a single Steam library A supported host installation, pairing, and host configuration Moonlight documents Android-mapped gamepads and common Xbox and PlayStation controllers; iOS/tvOS 13 or later support includes Xbox One S, PS4 Bluetooth, and MFi controllers Pair locally first. Internet access may require UPnP or another port-forwarding or tunnel method, and is not guaranteed on every network
Console remote play Games installed on a PlayStation or Xbox console The relevant console, configured for remote play Phone and controller compatibility depend on the console app and operating system This is not streaming from your PC; the console remains the host
Cloud gaming Playing supported games without your own gaming PC or console A supported cloud service and an eligible subscription or purchase Service, region, plan, and controller requirements vary Games are streamed from a provider’s servers, not your home computer

For the question “How do I play my Steam games on my phone?”, install Steam Link first. Choose Moonlight when you specifically want its configurable host/client workflow and are prepared to manage host software and networking.

Set up Steam Link on Android or iPhone

1. Prepare the gaming PC

  1. Install the desktop Steam client on the computer that will run the games.
  2. Sign in to the Steam account containing the games.
  3. Leave Steam running while you test the connection. The PC must stay awake and connected to the same home network as the phone.

2. Install the mobile app

Install Steam Link from the phone’s official app store. Valve’s Android documentation states that the app supports Android 5.0 and newer. Apple devices have a separate Steam Link support path; check the current App Store listing for the exact iPhone model and iOS requirement because mobile support can change.

3. Pair the phone with Steam

  1. Open Steam Link and begin its pairing flow.
  2. When the app discovers the computer, select it. If it displays a pairing code, enter that code in the Steam client on the PC.
  3. Complete the connection test. Keep both devices on the same home network for this first setup.
  4. When Steam Link presents the Steam interface, launch a game that you know works with a controller and test video, audio, and input.

4. Configure controls

Steam Link can accept touchscreen controls, but the layout and feel vary by game. For a handheld-style setup, pair a compatible Bluetooth controller with the phone or attach a controller that grips the phone. Confirm that the game recognizes the expected button layout before leaving the house; a game can stream correctly while still requiring a different control profile.

5. Test the whole session

Play for several minutes rather than stopping at the menu. Watch for audio dropouts, delayed inputs, resolution changes, or a phone that becomes hot and throttles. A short local test reveals whether the problem is the game, the controller, the host PC, or the network before you add the complexity of remote access.

Set up Moonlight with Sunshine

Moonlight is a streaming client. It needs a compatible host on the gaming PC. Sunshine is the current host route emphasized in Moonlight’s setup guidance; older host software may appear in legacy documentation, so follow the instructions for the host you actually install rather than mixing configuration steps from different generations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Install and configure the host

  1. Install Sunshine or another host explicitly supported by the current Moonlight documentation on the gaming PC.
  2. Open the host’s configuration interface and allow it to capture the desktop or the games and applications you want to launch.
  3. Keep the host computer awake, connected to the router, and signed in where the game launcher requires it.

2. Install Moonlight on the phone

  1. Install Moonlight from the phone’s official app store.
  2. Open it while the phone and PC are connected to the same home network.
  3. Select the discovered PC. Moonlight displays a PIN; enter that PIN in the host’s pairing prompt.
  4. After pairing, choose a listed game or application and test it locally.

Moonlight recommends completing this local pairing and game test before attempting to play over the internet. On iOS and tvOS, its guidance states that same-network pairing is required under Apple’s guidelines, so remote-only setup is not a reliable first step.

  • 🎮 Hall Effect Joysticks/Hall Trigger: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver 360° seamless pinpoint control, provide the precision and durability that mobile gamers demand. • 🎮 Magnetic Detachable Faceplates: Elevate your G8 Galileo to match your unique style with magnetic detachable faceplates. Effortlessly switch them out to keep your gaming setup fresh and exhilarating, much like you'd personalize your in-game character.

3. Add games or applications

Use the host’s application list to expose the games or desktop sessions you need. Test one game first. If the game opens outside the visible list, add the correct launcher or executable through the host’s documented interface, then reconnect from Moonlight.

Connect a physical controller

Bluetooth gamepad

  1. Put the controller into pairing mode.
  2. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the controller.
  3. Return to Steam Link or Moonlight and verify that every stick, trigger, and face button registers.
  4. Launch the game and check its control scheme. Some titles default to keyboard and mouse until a gamepad input is detected.

Moonlight documents standard Android-mapped gamepads and support for common Xbox and PlayStation controllers. For iOS and tvOS 13 or later, its guide lists Xbox One S and PS4 Bluetooth controllers as well as MFi controllers. Compatibility is not identical across every phone and controller combination: Moonlight specifically recommends testing Android device/controller pairings because some Bluetooth combinations can have latency or disconnection problems.

Phone-mounted controllers

A telescopic mobile controller clamps around the phone and connects through USB-C, Lightning, or Bluetooth, depending on the model. A USB-C phone game controller can reduce wireless controller latency and avoids carrying a separate gamepad, but check four details before buying:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The connector must match the phone. USB-C accessories do not fit Lightning iPhones, and a connector change can affect charging or case clearance.
  • The controller’s physical opening must fit the phone’s height, camera bump, and any case you keep installed.
  • The accessory must support the phone’s current operating system and the input mode used by Steam Link or Moonlight.
  • Confirm that the buttons are mapped as a standard gamepad rather than as keyboard keys if your games expect XInput-style controls.

Remove a thick case during the first fit test. Do not force a connector into a misaligned port, and do not assume that a controller advertised for mobile games supports every streamed PC title.

Optimize the network before remote play

Use the recommended local layout

  • Connect the gaming PC to the router by Ethernet whenever possible.
  • Connect the phone to a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) network. Keep the phone within reliable range of the access point rather than relying on a weak signal at the edge of the house.
  • Pause large downloads, backups, and video uploads while testing. These can compete with the stream even when the internet connection appears fast in a speed test.
  • Keep the router, phone, and host PC firmware and software current enough for the vendor’s supported setup.

These are recommendations, not a promise of a particular latency, frame rate, bandwidth figure, or image quality. Walls, radio interference, router load, host encoding, game settings, and the phone’s decoder all affect the result.

Move from local to away-from-home play

  1. Prove that the game works on the home network first.
  2. Confirm that the host PC remains reachable and does not sleep when you leave.
  3. Read the current Moonlight and Sunshine networking guidance for your setup. Sunshine documents a UPnP option that can create port forwarding automatically; other networks may require manual configuration or a different connection method.
  4. Test from a separate network, such as a trusted mobile hotspot, before depending on the setup while traveling.

Do not assume that every public Wi-Fi network, carrier network, hotel connection, or home router permits the traffic required for remote streaming. A connection that works at home can fail elsewhere because of firewall rules, carrier-grade NAT, captive portals, or blocked inbound traffic.

Steam Link or Moonlight: which should you choose?

Choose Steam Link when simplicity matters

  • Your games are already in Steam.
  • You want Valve’s guided pairing flow rather than a separate host configuration.
  • You prefer to begin with a local test and add remote access only if the network permits it.

Steam Link is less attractive when your library is spread across launchers or when you need detailed control over host applications and streaming behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Moonlight and Sunshine when control matters

  • You want a configurable client/host arrangement.
  • You are comfortable installing and maintaining host software.
  • You need to expose particular games or desktop applications and are prepared to troubleshoot pairing and network access.

Moonlight is not automatically lower-latency or higher-quality on every phone. Its advantage here is flexibility, while the actual experience still depends on the host, controller, and network.

What this setup is not

It is not native phone gaming

The PC remains responsible for rendering and running the game. If the PC is turned off, asleep, disconnected, or unable to launch the title, the phone cannot continue the session by itself.

It is not console remote play

PlayStation and Xbox remote play require the relevant console. A phone connected to a PC through Steam Link or Moonlight does not satisfy that requirement, and a console remote-play app does not stream games from your PC.

It is not cloud gaming

Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream supported games directly to a phone without an Xbox console when the user has an eligible Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription, according to the referenced support material. Launching Xbox Cloud Gaming from the Backbone App requires Backbone+, according to that same material. Service availability, plan terms, supported games, and regional eligibility can change, so check the current service pages before relying on them. Cloud gaming uses a provider’s servers; it does not use your home gaming PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot the most common failures

The PC does not appear

  • Put both devices on the same home network, not one on a guest network and the other on the main network.
  • Confirm that Steam or the Moonlight host is running and that the PC has not entered sleep mode.
  • Temporarily check firewall permissions for the streaming application using the host software’s documented ports and rules.
  • Restart the app on the phone and the host service on the PC, then repeat local pairing.

The picture is blocky or keeps dropping

  • Move the phone closer to the router and use the 5 GHz network.
  • Wire the host PC to the router.
  • Stop competing downloads and uploads.
  • Lower the stream’s resolution or frame-rate setting if the host encoder or wireless link cannot sustain the selected mode.
  • Test another game. A single title may overload the PC even when the streaming path is healthy.

Controls feel delayed

  • Test the controller locally in the phone’s Bluetooth or USB settings.
  • Try a wired or phone-mounted controller if Bluetooth latency or disconnections persist.
  • Reduce network congestion and move to the recommended 5 GHz connection.
  • Check whether the game is reading controller input or waiting for keyboard and mouse input.

Moonlight pairs but cannot connect away from home

  • Verify local play again; remote troubleshooting is meaningless if the home setup is unstable.
  • Check Sunshine’s UPnP setting and router status.
  • If UPnP is unavailable or blocked, follow the current host documentation for manual forwarding or another supported method.
  • Test from a network without a captive portal. Some hotels, offices, and public hotspots block the required traffic.

The phone becomes hot or drains quickly

  • Reduce screen brightness and close unnecessary apps.
  • Keep the phone ventilated rather than pressed against bedding or clothing.
  • Use a controller that allows charging if your phone and accessory support simultaneous play and charging.
  • Lower the stream workload if decoding a high-resolution stream causes sustained heat or throttling.

A practical first-session checklist

  1. Install Steam on the PC and Steam Link on the phone, or install Moonlight and a supported host such as Sunshine.
  2. Connect both devices to the same home network.
  3. Pair the phone with the PC and complete the displayed PIN or pairing flow.
  4. Launch one known-working game.
  5. Pair and test the intended controller.
  6. Play long enough to expose dropouts, heat, input problems, and sleep settings.
  7. Wire the PC to the router and move the phone to strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi if quality is inconsistent.
  8. Only then test an away-from-home connection and configure remote networking.
