Stranger Than Heaven is an upcoming single-player action-adventure game from RGG Studio and Sega. It follows Makoto Daito across five eras of Japanese history in a story Sega describes as a 50-year search for a place to belong. The game is scheduled for January 15, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Steam. It has not released yet, so its final performance, reviews, and the full depth of its systems remain unknown.
What is Stranger Than Heaven?
Stranger Than Heaven is a period-spanning action-adventure built by RGG Studio, the Sega team known for character-driven stories, dense urban settings, and hand-to-hand combat. Sega presents this project as a five-decade journey rather than a single-period historical game. Its central idea is belonging: a protagonist who is treated as an outsider travels through changing versions of Japan while trying to find somewhere he can call home.

The game is designed for one player. Sega has announced brawling combat, ordinary city activities that influence character growth, and a second path in which Makoto can work as an entertainment impresario. Those features are announcements, not independently tested impressions. No public hands-on evidence yet establishes how extensive the combat, management, exploration, or progression systems will be.

The opening occurs in San Francisco in 1915, while the main five-era structure uses imagined versions of Japanese cities inspired by real places. That distinction matters: San Francisco is the starting point of the story, not one of the five Japanese settings listed by Sega.

What is the story about?
Makoto Daito’s beginning in 1915
Makoto Daito is a teenager born to an American father and a Japanese mother. He grows up in San Francisco in 1915, where Sega says his appearance makes him a target of persecution. After losing his parents, Makoto decides to travel to Japan, his mother’s homeland, in the hope of finding a place where he belongs.

He sneaks aboard a suspicious ship. A fateful encounter during that voyage changes the direction of his life and launches the longer journey told across the game’s five eras. Sega’s published material treats this as the beginning of Makoto’s story, not a complete plot synopsis. The character’s ultimate destination, the full identity of the people he meets, and the way the five periods connect have not been fully revealed.
A story about belonging, not a documentary history
Sega’s English marketing describes the premise as “A Five Decade Battle for a Place to Call Home.” That is official marketing language describing the game’s theme. It should not be read as a quotation from a named person or as a promise that every event is historically documented.

The settings are imagined versions inspired by cities that existed in the relevant periods. The game therefore uses recognizable historical circumstances as dramatic foundations while allowing RGG Studio to create its own characters, conflicts, districts, and story events.
The five eras and their city inspirations
Sega identifies five Japanese era-city settings. Each combines a year, a place-inspired environment, and a social atmosphere that helps define that chapter.

| 1943 | Minami, Osaka | A major entertainment district amid international tensions |
| 1951 | Atami, Shizuoka | A postwar tourist destination |
| 1965 | Shinjuku, Tokyo | A chaotic major entertainment district |
1915: Kokura-inspired industrial city
The first Japanese-era setting is inspired by Kokura in Fukuoka. Its steelworks and active working population suggest an industrial city shaped by labor, manufacturing, and rapid change. This chapter follows the San Francisco opening and places Makoto in the first of the game’s Japanese environments.
1929: Kure-inspired naval city
The 1929 setting draws on Kure in Hiroshima, a city associated in Sega’s description with naval shipyards and a powerful yakuza presence. That combination gives the period a distinctly maritime and criminal atmosphere, although Sega has not disclosed the specific organizations or missions Makoto will encounter.
1943: Minami-inspired entertainment district
The 1943 chapter is inspired by Minami in Osaka. Sega describes it as a major entertainment district operating amid international tensions. The date places the setting in the middle of a turbulent wartime period, while the entertainment focus connects directly to the game’s show-business systems.

The final listed period is 1965, represented by an imagined version of Shinjuku in Tokyo. Sega calls it a major entertainment district and describes its atmosphere as chaotic. It is the latest of the five announced Japanese settings and completes the half-century span.
How the announced gameplay works
Flexible physical combat
Sega describes a flexible combat system intended to convey the raw physicality of brawling. The announcement indicates close-range fighting as a central activity, but it does not establish the final control scheme, number of combat styles, difficulty options, enemy variety, or how combat changes from era to era.
Daily activities and character growth
In a September 2026 update, Sega said ordinary activities such as walking, eating, and recreation connect to character growth and skill unlocks. The amount of time players spend in each era is also said to affect Makoto’s abilities. This makes the cities more than backdrops: the announced design links exploration and leisure to progression.
The precise rules have not been published. Sega has not specified whether activities are optional, how quickly skills unlock, whether choices can be reversed, or how much of the main story can be completed without engaging with them.

Entertainment and show-business systems
Makoto can also act as an impresario and pursue success in entertainment. Sega has not yet detailed the full management structure, the kinds of performers or venues involved, or how this system interacts with the combat story. The 1943 Minami-inspired district and 1965 Shinjuku-inspired district are especially notable in this context because both are described as entertainment centers, but the company has not confirmed that those are the only periods where the system appears.
Who is in the cast?
Sega’s May 2026 overview names a large cast drawn from acting, music, and entertainment. Its June announcement added Tupac Shakur as a character appearance. Sega says RGG Studio worked with Amaru Entertainment and used archival footage and photographs as references when creating Tupac’s character design.

What rating does the game have?
Sega’s September 2026 Japanese update lists a CERO D rating, intended for players aged 17 and older in Japan. That is Japanese rating information. Ratings for other territories have not been confirmed in the published material described here, so the CERO classification should not be presented as the game’s worldwide age rating.

Should you buy the physical or digital version?
The choice is primarily about platform and format rather than a confirmed difference in game content. PS5 is the only platform with an announced physical edition. Xbox Series X|S and Steam are listed as digital-only, while Xbox players also have the announced Game Pass option. The Collector’s Edition is aimed at players who specifically want the SteelBook, box, vinyl record, and DLC vouchers; its Japanese price should not be used to predict a local price elsewhere.
If you want a disc that can be resold or displayed, the PS5 physical version is the relevant announced option. If you play on Xbox or PC, the available choice is digital, with Game Pass providing an additional access route on Xbox. Exact subscription terms and regional storefront pricing should be checked when the game launches.
The bottom line
Stranger Than Heaven is Sega and RGG Studio’s unreleased, single-player journey through five imagined Japanese city settings from 1915 to 1965. Combat, city life, skill growth, and entertainment management are all announced features, but their final quality cannot be judged before release. The confirmed date is January 15, 2027, with PS5, Xbox, PC, cloud, and Steam versions planned and a physical edition announced only for PS5.
