Yes, you can use a PS4 or PS4 Pro to play personal videos, music, and photos. You have three practical options: connect a FAT32 or exFAT USB drive, stream through the PS4 Media Player from a DLNA server on your home network, or use the Plex app with Plex Media Server. USB is simplest, DLNA is a straightforward free network option, and Plex is best for a large, organized library.
The PS4 is normally a media player, not a media server. Your computer, NAS, or another device supplies the files.

Choose the right method
| Method | What you need | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| USB | FAT32 or exFAT USB drive | Occasional playback with no network setup |
| DLNA | DLNA server on a computer, NAS, or compatible device | Simple folder-based playback from an always-on local server |
| Plex | Plex Media Server plus the Plex PS4 app | Artwork, metadata, watched status, multiple libraries, and multi-device use |
DLNA and Plex are both local-network streaming solutions, but Plex does not use the PS4’s DLNA browsing interface. Plex still requires Plex Media Server to run somewhere. Commercial apps such as Netflix, YouTube, and Spotify are different: they stream internet services and do not require DLNA or your own media server.

USB is the only genuinely server-free method for playing your own files. The PS4 reads the files directly from the attached drive; it is not network streaming.

- "Suspend mode" eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button.
- Enables the greatest game developers in the world to unlock their creativity and push the boundaries of play through a platform that is tuned specifically to their needs.
- Engage in endless personal challenges between you and your community, and share your epic moments for the world to see.
- Gamers can share their epic triumphs by hitting the "SHARE button" on the controller, scan through the last few minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game.
- Format the USB drive as exFAT or FAT32.
- Create a folder in the drive’s root directory and copy video files into it. Image files must also be inside a folder.
- For music, create a folder named exactly
MUSICand place your tracks inside it. - Connect the drive to the PS4.
- Open Media Player from the PS4 content area or Library. Select Download first if it is not installed.
- Select USB, open the folder, and choose a file.
FAT32 has an approximately 4 GB single-file limit, so exFAT is usually the better choice for large videos. USB playback avoids Wi-Fi congestion, server configuration, and DLNA discovery problems, but the file still has to use a format the PS4 can decode.
PS4 USB video compatibility
An extension such as .mkv or .mp4 does not guarantee playback. The video codec, profile, level, resolution, audio track, and sometimes subtitles also matter. Sony’s official format table lists these combinations:
| Container | Video | Audio |
|---|---|---|
| MKV | H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2 | MP3, AAC LC, or AC-3/Dolby Digital |
| AVI | MPEG4 ASP or H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2 | MP3, AAC LC, or AC-3/Dolby Digital |
| MP4 | H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2; PS4 Pro also lists Level 5.2 support | AAC LC, AC-3/Dolby Digital, or LPCM |
| MPEG-2 PS | MPEG2 Visual | MP2, MP3, AAC LC, AC-3/Dolby Digital, or LPCM |
| MPEG-2 TS | H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2 or MPEG2 Visual | MP2, AAC LC, or AC-3/Dolby Digital |
Sony also lists AVCHD files such as .m2ts and .mts, plus XAVC S .mp4. For the complete, model-sensitive table, see Sony’s PS4 video, music, and USB support page. A PS4 Pro’s additional 4K or profile support should not be treated as a capability of every standard PS4.

Method 2: Stream from a DLNA server
DLNA is a set of standards that lets a player find media shared by another device on the same local network. In this setup:
- The computer, NAS, router, or media-server application is the DLNA server.
- The PS4 Media Player is the DLNA client/player.
- Your home network connects the two.
The server may send the original file or convert it into a format the PS4 can play. Compatibility therefore depends on both the file and the server’s ability to remux or transcode it.
General DLNA setup
- Install a DLNA-capable media-server application on the computer or NAS containing your files.
- Add the folders containing your videos, music, and photos.
- Enable media sharing or DLNA in the application.
- Connect the PS4 and server to the same local network. Wired Ethernet is preferable for high-bitrate video.
- Open Media Player on the PS4.
- Wait for the server to appear beside connected USB devices, select it, and browse to a file.
The server must remain powered on while you watch. The files normally stay on the computer or NAS rather than being copied to the PS4. “Connected to the same internet” is not enough: guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, separate VLANs, VPNs, and firewall rules can prevent local devices from communicating.

DLNA troubleshooting
The server does not appear
- Confirm the server application is running and DLNA sharing is enabled.
- Check that both devices are on the same router and not separated by guest-network isolation.
- Temporarily test with the computer’s firewall disabled, then create a proper media-server exception rather than leaving it disabled.
- Turn media sharing off and on, restart the server application and Media Player, and check whether a VPN or security suite is blocking discovery.
- Restart the router only after checking these simpler causes.
The server appears but folders are empty
- Verify the folders were added and indexed.
- Rescan the library.
- Check file permissions and the account used by the server.
- Check whether the server filters unsupported file types.
A file appears but will not play
- Test a small H.264 MP4 with AAC audio.
- Check the audio track separately; unsupported audio is a common failure point.
- Remux or transcode the file to a PS4-compatible combination.
- Treat subtitles separately. Do not assume every subtitle format works in the built-in player.
Playback pauses or buffers
- Use Ethernet for the PS4 or server where possible.
- Reduce the video bitrate or use a smaller encode.
- Stop other high-bandwidth activity on the home network.
- If the server is transcoding, check its CPU/GPU capacity.
- Do not assume a faster internet plan will fix a problem occurring entirely inside your home network.
Method 3: Use Plex without the PS4’s DLNA interface
Plex provides its own library and player interface. It does not remove the server requirement: personal files still come from Plex Media Server running on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, compatible NAS, or NVIDIA SHIELD.
- Install Plex Media Server on the device holding your media.
- Add your video, music, and photo libraries.
- Sign in to Plex.
- Install the Plex app on the PS4 from the PlayStation Store, where available.
- Sign in or link the app to your server.
- Choose a library and start playback.
Plex is more involved than basic DLNA, but it adds posters, descriptions, categories, watched status, and user profiles. The PS4 app’s availability depends on PlayStation Store region; the United States is listed, but readers elsewhere should search their local store.
Plex Direct Play, Direct Stream, and transcoding
- Direct Play: the PS4 plays the original file with no conversion.
- Direct Stream: Plex repackages compatible streams without converting the underlying video or audio.
- Transcoding: Plex converts the media because of an unsupported codec, container, audio track, subtitle format, resolution, or bandwidth setting.
Plex’s PlayStation guidance says content most likely to Direct Play includes MP4 video at 1920×1080 or below, H.264 Level 4.1 or lower, AAC/AC-3/E-AC-3 audio, and a bitrate of 20 Mbps or lower; Plex recommends approximately 8 Mbps for better results. PS4 Pro guidance lists 4K HEVC support. Plex also says MKV files are not Direct Played by the PlayStation app, although compatible streams may be Direct Streamed. DTS audio may require transcoding, and subtitles can be burned into the video, also forcing transcoding.

A compatible file that Direct Plays is usually least demanding. A weak server can struggle with multiple simultaneous transcodes. See Plex’s current supported-format guidance for the latest details.
DLNA versus Plex
| Factor | DLNA through Media Player | Plex app |
|---|---|---|
| Separate server required | Yes | Yes |
| DLNA required | Yes | No |
| Setup | Lower | Higher |
| Library organization | Usually basic folder browsing | Artwork, metadata, categories, and watched status |
| Transcoding | Depends on the DLNA server | Built into Plex’s server/client model |
| Remote access | Not the normal built-in use case | Supported, subject to Plex account and plan requirements |
| Best use | Simple local playback | Large libraries and multiple devices |
Plex describes its basic local personal-media server and streaming functionality as free. Premium features and remote personal-media streaming have separate qualifications, so Plex Pass is not automatically required for ordinary in-home playback.
Other PS4 media features
Background music
The PS4 Media Player can continue music playback while you return to the home screen or start a game. Hold the PS button and select Media Player from the Quick Menu to access controls such as pause and volume. This documented behavior applies to music started through Media Player; do not assume every third-party app supports it, and games may impose their own audio restrictions.
Best Value

Closed captions
Enable Settings > Accessibility > Closed Captions > Display Closed Captions. Restart Media Player, start a video, and press OPTIONS to activate captions. Subtitle support still depends on the file and playback route.
Parental controls
Family managers can restrict access to Media Player content through the PS4’s parental-control settings.
Commercial streaming
Apps such as Netflix, YouTube, Spotify, and other services are separate from local-file playback. They stream from the internet and do not need DLNA or Plex Media Server. Plex also offers separate ad-supported Movies & Shows and Live TV content on PlayStation; that catalog is not the same as your personal library.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Which option should you choose?
- Choose USB if you have only a few files, the computer is not always on, or you want the least setup.
- Choose DLNA if your files should stay on a computer or NAS, basic folder browsing is enough, and you want to use the built-in Media Player without a Plex account.
- Choose Plex if you have a large library, want metadata and watched status, use several devices, or need remote access and have a capable server.
- Choose neither as your primary player if you mainly need modern 4K/HDR playback, broad codec and subtitle support, or a current appliance with wide streaming-service support. A modern streaming stick, smart-TV app, or dedicated media box may be a better fit, while the PS4 remains useful for games and occasional local playback.
For a quick test, start with a small H.264 MP4 containing AAC audio. If that works but your original file does not, the problem is usually codec, profile, audio, subtitle, bitrate, or transcoding compatibility—not the basic PS4 connection.
