Verify an SCP: Secret Laboratory server in four layers: prove that players can reach its public address and port, confirm that its configuration survives a clean restart, meet Northwood Studios’ Community Server Guidelines and request Verified List placement, then inspect the server through the in-game browser before joining. A direct connection proves reachability, not official-list status; Remote Admin proves that an authorized administrator can manage the server, not that Northwood has verified it.

What “verified” means for an SCP: Secret Laboratory server
Players and owners use “verified” to describe several different checks. Keeping them separate prevents the most common misunderstanding: a server can work perfectly through a direct connection and still be absent from the official browser until Northwood approves it for the Verified List.

Northwood’s Community Server Guidelines, effective June 27, 2025, define the “Verified List” as the publicly available SCP: Secret Laboratory server list accessible in-game and through servers.scpslgame.com. The same guidelines state that the minimum requirement for using the service is a publicly available server. That policy decision is separate from whether your machine is running and accepting connections.
Layer 1: Prove that the server is online and reachable
Start with an external connection test. Browser visibility is not a substitute for this test: if the server cannot be reached from outside its host, changing its listing information will not solve the underlying problem.

1. Start the dedicated server and wait for readiness
Launch the dedicated server and wait until its status indicates that it is online or ready. Do not test while the process is still loading plugins, applying configuration, or creating its initial game state. Record the address and port that players are expected to use. The relevant address is the externally reachable address, not a local-only address that works only from the host’s own network.
2. Confirm the public address and port
Write down the exact external address and port shown or assigned by your hosting setup. Treat the pair as one destination: an accurate address with the wrong port fails just as surely as a wrong address with the right port. If you use managed hosting, obtain the public endpoint from its control panel or support documentation. If you self-host, verify that the address points to the machine running the dedicated server and that the chosen port is forwarded or exposed as required by your network.

From a game client outside the server’s local environment, use the direct-connect option or the game’s add-server function and enter the recorded address and port. A successful connection demonstrates that the process is listening and that the route from an external player to the server works. Repeat the test from a second network when possible, such as a different household or a mobile connection, because a test from the same local network can conceal routing or firewall problems.
4. Treat browser absence as a separate diagnosis
A server may accept direct connections while remaining absent from the browser. Hosting documentation from OmneHosting specifically warns that extra ports can affect browser visibility. Check every port required by the hosting arrangement, including any additional query, communication or listing port specified by that arrangement, rather than assuming that the gameplay port alone controls discovery. Do not infer that a missing browser entry means the game process is offline until the external direct-connect test has also failed.

- Direct connect succeeds, browser entry is missing: investigate listing, port exposure and Northwood verification separately.
- Direct connect fails and browser entry is missing: begin with the process state, external address, port forwarding, firewall and host-side network settings.
- Only local clients connect: the server is not yet proven publicly reachable; test from outside the local network before requesting verification.
Layer 2: Check configuration and the console after a restart
Verification is easier when the server presents stable, intentional information. A setting that appears correct before a restart but fails to load afterward will produce a different player experience and can undermine a listing request.
Use a restart as a configuration test
- Stop or restart the dedicated server using the normal control provided by your host or server setup.
- Wait for the online or ready state again.
- Inspect the server console for errors during startup and plugin or configuration loading.
- Repeat the external direct-connect test after the restart.
XGamingServer’s documentation recommends this post-restart console check. The objective is not merely to see a running process; it is to confirm that the intended configuration loaded without errors and that the server remains reachable after a normal maintenance cycle.
Review what players will actually see
Confirm that the advertised server name, information or rules text, contact method and any whitelist behavior match your actual policies. Use wording that a player can understand before joining. If a whitelist is active, make sure the access rules are deliberate and that the information panel does not promise open access. If the contact method has changed, update it before asking Northwood to review the server.
- Server name: the public identity should be intentional and consistent.
- Information and rules: describe the rules players will be expected to follow and ensure they agree with the server’s real behavior.
- Contact method: provide the channel you actively monitor for player or moderation questions.
- Whitelist behavior: make the access restriction clear rather than surprising players after they connect.
- Console state: resolve startup and configuration errors instead of treating a merely running process as proof of a clean server.
Layer 3: Meet Northwood’s requirements and request Verified List placement
The Verified List is a Northwood-controlled public service, not an automatic consequence of opening a port. Northwood’s Community Server Guidelines govern eligibility, and the service requires a publicly available server at minimum. Read the current guidelines in full, bring the server into compliance, accept the applicable agreement, and then use Northwood’s Safety and Compliance contact route for a verification request.

Prepare before contacting Northwood
- Make the server publicly reachable and record the external address and port.
- Confirm that a client outside the host’s network can connect directly.
- Restart the server and clear any startup or configuration errors visible in the console.
- Check the public name, information or rules text, contact method and whitelist behavior.
- Review the Community Server Guidelines and ensure the server complies with them.
- Accept the agreement required for the Verified List service.
- Submit the request through Northwood’s Safety and Compliance contact route, including the information needed to identify the publicly available server.
Northwood’s Contact Us guidance says: “For any server verification needs. Before sending a server verification request, please make sure your server is in compliance with the CSG (Community Server Guidelines).” Compliance should therefore be complete before the request is sent, not treated as something to fix after submission.
What the request does—and does not—promise
The current official material does not promise an approval time, a guaranteed response window or a particular ranking position. Do not publish or rely on an unverified turnaround estimate. Until Northwood confirms placement, describe the server as publicly reachable or awaiting verification rather than official-list verified.

Layer 4: Inspect the server from the player side
The official server-list guide explains that the browser exposes server information and rules and displays indicators that help players judge a server before joining. Open the server’s information panel instead of joining blindly.

Read the information panel and rules before joining. For owners, use a normal player account or ask an independent player to verify that the published text and indicators match the configuration you intended. This player-side inspection is a quality check; it does not replace Northwood’s decision about Verified List placement.

Remote Admin: useful evidence of authorization, not a verification badge
Remote Admin is the authorized moderator and administrator panel. It can display player information and expose server-configuration controls, but access is authorization-controlled. A working Remote Admin connection therefore shows that an authorized administrator can manage the server; it does not establish that Northwood has placed the server on the Verified List.

- Remote Admin available: an authorized operator has administrative access.
- Direct connection works: the server is reachable at the tested public endpoint.
- Browser shows Official Server: the in-game browser is presenting that indicator.
- Northwood verification completed: the server has been accepted for the Northwood-controlled Verified List.
None of the first three statements, by itself, proves the fourth.

The server is not reachable by direct connection
- Check that the dedicated process reached its online or ready state.
- Reconfirm the external address and port rather than using a local address.
- Inspect the host or network setup for blocked or unexposed ports.
- Restart, inspect the console for errors, and test again from outside the local network.
Direct connection works, but the browser does not show the server
- Check extra ports that your hosting arrangement requires for browser visibility.
- Confirm that the advertised name and information loaded after restart.
- Do not label the server Northwood-verified until the Verified List request has been accepted.
The server appears, but the information is wrong
- Correct the name, rules or information text, contact method and whitelist behavior in the server configuration.
- Restart and inspect the console to verify that the correction loaded.
- Open the player-facing information panel again to confirm what is actually published.
Players ask whether the server is official
Tell them to use the browser’s Official Server indicator and read the information panel and rules. Explain that Remote Admin access and a successful direct connection are different facts from Verified List status.

Self-hosting or managed hosting: compare the responsibilities
The verification policy is the same either way: Northwood decides eligibility and listing. The practical difference is who handles the operational work required before you submit a request.

Choose the arrangement that gives you reliable control over the address, port, restart process and console evidence you need. No hosting arrangement can substitute for the public-server requirement or Northwood’s approval.
Final pre-request checklist
- The dedicated server reaches an online or ready state.
- You have recorded the externally reachable address and port.
- An external client has connected through direct connect or the add-server function.
- Any additional ports relevant to browser visibility are exposed and tested.
- A restart completes without unresolved console errors.
- The public name, information or rules, contact method and whitelist behavior are accurate.
- The in-game browser shows the intended information and indicators.
- You have read the current Community Server Guidelines and brought the server into compliance.
- The server is publicly available and the required agreement has been accepted.
- The verification request is sent through Northwood’s Safety and Compliance contact route.
After these checks, you have evidence for each part of the process instead of relying on a single label. Keep the direct-connect details, restart-console result and player-facing information available in case Northwood needs to identify or assess the server.
