For YouTube Live, aim for one keyframe every 2 seconds and do not let the interval exceed 4 seconds. In FFmpeg, set the GOP size in frames using the output frame rate—for example, use -g 60 at 30 fps—then inspect the encoded output with ffprobe. The command option sets a maximum GOP size; it does not prove that the encoder emitted keyframes at the intended times.
Calculate the GOP size from your output frame rate
A GOP (group of pictures) size is measured in frames, while YouTube’s recommendation is expressed in seconds. Multiply the actual output frame rate by the target interval:

The 24 fps and 60 fps figures are arithmetic conversions; YouTube’s published example specifically gives 30 fps and 60 frames.
Set the GOP and closed-GOP option in FFmpeg
For a 30 fps H.264 encode targeting a 2-second GOP, the relevant command fragment is:

ffmpeg -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -g 60 -flags +cgop OUTPUTReplace INPUT and OUTPUT with your source and destination. This fragment illustrates encoder configuration; it is not a complete live-stream command or a report of a tested stream. FFmpeg documents -g as the maximum GOP size, so the encoder may insert keyframes sooner. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding.

Choose settings compatible with your codec and stream setup; a correct keyframe interval alone does not establish that every other stream setting is suitable.

Verify emitted keyframes with ffprobe
Inspect the encoded file rather than relying only on the requested FFmpeg option. This command prints each video frame’s keyframe flag, best-effort timestamp, and picture type:
ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_frames
-show_entries frame=key_frame,best_effort_timestamp_time,pict_type
-of csv=p=0 OUTPUT- Run the command on the encoded output, replacing
OUTPUTwith its path. - Identify frames marked as keyframes and note their timestamps.
- Calculate the elapsed time between successive keyframes. Aim for approximately 2 seconds and confirm the interval does not exceed 4 seconds.
FFprobe’s -show_frames option reports frame-level information, which lets you check what was emitted. Pay attention to the stream’s start behavior and timestamps. For variable-frame-rate material, use elapsed timestamps rather than inferring the interval from a frame count alone.

If YouTube reports an incorrect keyframe frequency
If YouTube Live Control Room reports an incorrect keyframe frequency, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to change the encoder’s keyframe frequency so keyframes are sent every 2 seconds. Recheck the emitted frames after changing the configuration: YouTube notes that ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes. If the encoded file appears correct but the live stream report does not, investigate the stream’s ingestion path rather than assuming the requested -g value guarantees what YouTube receives.
