To loop a multi-video playlist in OBS, add a VLC Video Source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Set Visibility Behaviour separately: the documented default stops playback while the source is hidden and restarts it when shown.
Set up a repeating video playlist
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video Source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC as well. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Add the playlist source. In your scene, add a VLC Video Source, open its properties, and add the video files you want in the playlist. This source is intended for playlists; the standard Media Source is for a single local file. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Enable Loop Playlist. This setting restarts the source after it has run out of media files. It controls what happens at the end of the full playlist, not what happens when you hide the source. OBS’s guide lists it as on by default, but check the property in your installed version. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Choose Visibility Behaviour. Select whether the playlist should continue, pause, or stop while the source is not visible. The documented default is Stop when not visible, restart when visible. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Preview both transitions. Let the playlist reach its final file and check that it returns to the first. Hide and show the source to check the chosen visibility behavior before relying on it in a live scene.
What the visibility setting changes
Use the eye icon beside a source in the Sources dock to hide or show it. Visibility Behaviour determines what happens to playback while that source is hidden, including when it is absent from the active scene. Choose a continue or pause behavior if you want playback to behave differently while hidden and that option is available in your OBS version. The official guide describes the continue/pause/stop distinction, but does not quantify resource use or guarantee how a particular build preserves playlist position. Preview the behavior you need rather than assuming that showing a source will resume at a particular point.

Keep similar OBS controls distinct
- VLC Video Source — Loop Playlist: restarts playback after the last file in the playlist. It does not determine hidden-source behavior. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Standard Media Source — Loop: repeats one local file. It has a separate Restart playback when source becomes active setting, documented as on by default. It is not the multi-file playlist control. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Image Slide Show: has its own Loop and Visibility Behaviour settings. OBS lists Loop and Always play even when not visible as defaults for the slideshow; do not assume those defaults apply to a VLC video playlist. [OBS Project: Media Sources]
- Source order: an enabled source can still be obscured by another source above it. Check its position in the Sources dock as well as its eye icon. [OBS Project: Sources]
Troubleshoot playlist looping and visibility
