How to View and Manage Docker Compose Logs

A practical guide to Docker Compose logs: view service output, follow live lines, limit history, add timestamps, isolate replicas, and correlate unexplained restarts with Compose events.

Use docker compose logs from the directory containing your Compose project to inspect service output. Run it without a service name for every service, append a service name such as web to narrow the view, and add --follow when you need a live stream. History and presentation are controlled with --tail, --since, --until, --timestamps, --no-color, and --no-log-prefix. If the output does not explain a restart or health transition, pair the logs with docker compose events --json and compare the event times with timestamped log lines.

Start with the Compose project context

Compose resolves services from the project represented by your Compose file and the current command context. Open a terminal in that project before running the commands below. The command displays log output from services; it does not replace the application’s own logging configuration, but it gives you a single view of output emitted by the project’s containers.

View every service

docker compose logs

With no service argument, Compose gathers the available output for each service in the project. This is the fastest first check when you do not yet know which container is involved.

View one service

docker compose logs web

Replace web with the service name from your Compose configuration. Restricting the scope makes a noisy multi-service project easier to read and is usually the next step after an all-service scan.

Choose the scope before reading the output

There are three useful scopes: the entire project, one service, or one replica of a service. The command’s scope determines which lines can appear, so select it before drawing conclusions from the log.

Question Command shape What it shows
What is happening anywhere in the project? docker compose logs Output from all project services
What is one service reporting? docker compose logs SERVICE Output for the named service
What is one replica reporting? docker compose logs --index INDEX SERVICE The selected container index for a service with multiple replicas

A service-level view is safer for diagnosing an application error because unrelated services cannot bury the relevant lines. An all-service view is better for startup ordering, dependency failures, and incidents where a request crosses several containers. When replicas are involved, a service-wide result can combine messages from different containers; use --index to isolate the replica you need.

Take a snapshot or follow new lines

Snapshot mode

The default invocation retrieves the log output available when the command runs and then exits. Use this mode for a quick report, a bounded time window, or a command whose output will be pasted into a ticket.

Follow mode

docker compose logs --follow

--follow, also written as -f, keeps the command attached and streams new output as it arrives. It is useful while reproducing a failed request, starting a service, or waiting for a dependency to become ready.

docker compose logs -f web

Following a single service reduces noise during an interactive investigation. Stop the stream with your terminal’s interrupt key when you have captured the relevant sequence.

Follow while retaining only recent history

docker compose logs --follow --tail 100

This starts with the last 100 lines for each selected container and then continues with new lines. It avoids loading an entire history while preserving enough context to see what happened immediately before the live failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control how much history is displayed

Limit by line count

docker compose logs --tail 100

--tail, or -n, limits the number of lines shown from the end for each container. The documented default is all, so an unqualified snapshot can be much larger than expected. Set a small value for a quick check, then increase it when the first lines do not show the beginning of the failure.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

The limit applies per container rather than to one combined project-wide total. In a project with several services, each selected container contributes up to the requested number of lines.

Start at a relative time

docker compose logs --since 15m

--since accepts an RFC3339 timestamp or a relative duration such as 42m. A relative window is convenient when you know the incident happened recently and want to avoid older startup messages.

Use an absolute time or an end boundary

docker compose logs --since 2026-10-15T09:00:00Z --until 2026-10-15T09:15:00Z

--until excludes output after the supplied timestamp or relative duration. Combining --since and --until gives you a fixed interval for comparing an incident with an external timeline. Use the same time zone and precision as the incident record so that the boundaries are not shifted accidentally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The underlying container log retrieval documentation also describes RFC3339Nano timestamps, Unix timestamps, and Go duration strings for time filtering. Compose’s documented examples use RFC3339 values and relative durations; if you use a numeric Unix timestamp, verify that the installed Docker Compose version accepts the form in your environment.

Make output readable and transferable

Add timestamps

docker compose logs --timestamps

--timestamps, or -t, places timestamps on each line. This is valuable when matching an application message to a restart or other lifecycle event, especially when several services write at nearly the same time.

Remove color

docker compose logs --no-color

--no-color produces monochrome output. Use it when terminal escape sequences would make a pasted incident report difficult to read or when a pipeline expects plain text.

Remove the Compose prefix

docker compose logs --no-log-prefix

--no-log-prefix suppresses the service/container prefix that Compose normally adds. This leaves the application’s own message text easier to parse, but it also removes context that can identify the source. Keep the prefix when reviewing multiple services; remove it when another system already records the service name or when a parser requires the raw message.

Combine presentation options

docker compose logs --no-color --no-log-prefix

This combination is useful for a ticket, a shell pipeline, or a text comparison. Add --timestamps when chronological correlation matters:

docker compose logs --timestamps --no-color --no-log-prefix

These switches affect presentation, not the underlying time window or service scope. Add --tail, --since, or a service name separately when you need to reduce the data being retrieved.

Handle services with multiple replicas

A service can have more than one container. When their output is combined, identical messages may come from different replicas, and a single replica may be the one restarting while its peers remain healthy. Use --index with the service name to select a container index:

docker compose logs --index 2 web

The index is meaningful only in the context of that service. If you are unsure which replica is relevant, begin with the service-wide output and timestamp it, then narrow the view after identifying a distinctive message or time. Keep the selected index in any follow-up command so that the comparison remains about the same container.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Diagnose a restart with logs and events

Logs explain what a process wrote to standard output and standard error. They do not always state why a container stopped, was recreated, or changed health state. Docker’s Compose event stream supplies that lifecycle context.

1. Capture a bounded log window

docker compose logs --timestamps --since 15m

Start with a recent interval that includes the suspected restart. Timestamps provide the reference needed for the next steps.

2. Narrow to the suspected service

docker compose logs --follow --timestamps --tail 100 api

Replace api with the service under investigation. The command shows the most recent context and keeps listening while you reproduce the problem. If the project has replicas, add --index once you know which container to isolate.

3. Reproduce the failure and note exact times

Record the time at which the request, startup, health transition, or restart occurs. Do not rely on the order in a mixed stream alone; the timestamp on each line is the durable correlation key.

4. Open the project event stream

docker compose events --json

docker compose events is a real-time stream of container events for every container in the project. With --json, it emits one JSON object per line, which is easier to save or process than human-formatted output.

5. Bound the event window when reviewing a past incident

docker compose events --json --since 15m

The event command supports --since and --until, so you can restrict the stream to the same interval used for the logs. For a completed incident, choose matching start and end boundaries rather than comparing an unbounded event stream with a short log sample.

6. Correlate, do not guess

Compare the event timestamp and container identity with the timestamped log lines. A final application message immediately before a stop or recreation is useful context, but the absence of an explanatory line is itself a reason to consult events. Events can show that a lifecycle action occurred even when the application emitted no final diagnostic message.

Practical command recipes

Inspect a project after startup

docker compose logs --timestamps --tail 200

This gives each service a recent, timestamped slice. It is a sensible first pass when several containers started together and you need to see dependency errors without loading all history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watch one API while sending requests

docker compose logs --follow --timestamps api

Keep the stream open, exercise the endpoint, and match each request’s effect to the resulting lines. If the output is too large, add --tail 50 so the stream begins with only the latest context.

Review only the last quarter hour

docker compose logs --since 15m

A relative duration avoids manually converting the incident time to an absolute timestamp. It is particularly useful immediately after noticing a symptom.

Produce clean text for a ticket

docker compose logs --since 30m --timestamps --no-color --no-log-prefix

The time boundary limits volume, timestamps preserve chronology, and the presentation switches prevent terminal formatting from obscuring the message text. If the ticket covers several services, retain the default prefix instead of removing it.

Inspect one replica during a rolling problem

docker compose logs --index 2 --timestamps --since 10m worker

This focuses the evidence on replica 2 of worker. Repeat with another index only when you need to compare replicas; otherwise, mixing their output can hide which container produced a line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand what the command can and cannot show

Logs are output, not an event history

The underlying log retrieval operation batch-retrieves logs present at execution time. In follow mode, it continues streaming new standard-output and standard-error output. A process that exits without writing a final line can therefore leave no textual explanation in the log, even though an event records the stop or recreation.

Time filters change the evidence set

A short --since window can omit the startup warning that explains a later failure. A very broad window can bury the relevant lines in old output. Start with a bounded interval, then widen it deliberately when the first result lacks the needed context.

Prefixes trade context for portability

Removing prefixes makes text cleaner but discards Compose’s service/container identifier. When saving output for someone who cannot reproduce your terminal view, include the service name in the command or retain the prefix so each line has an unambiguous source.

Follow mode is intentionally open-ended

A command using --follow remains attached while new output arrives. It is not a finite report. Use a snapshot command for automation that must exit, and reserve follow mode for interactive observation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reference: option selection by task

Need Options to use Example
All project services No service argument docker compose logs
One service Service name docker compose logs web
Live output --follow or -f docker compose logs -f web
Recent lines per container --tail N or -n N docker compose logs --tail 100
Output after a point in time --since VALUE docker compose logs --since 15m
Output before a point in time --until VALUE docker compose logs --until 2026-10-15T09:15:00Z
Chronological correlation --timestamps or -t docker compose logs -t api
Plain terminal output --no-color docker compose logs --no-color
Application text without Compose prefix --no-log-prefix docker compose logs --no-log-prefix
One replica --index INDEX plus service docker compose logs --index 2 web
Lifecycle context docker compose events docker compose events --json

A repeatable decision path

  1. Run docker compose logs --tail 100 to obtain a manageable project-wide snapshot.
  2. If one service stands out, rerun the command with that service name.
  3. Add --timestamps when you need to line up messages with a request, restart, or deployment time.
  4. Use --since and, when necessary, --until to isolate the incident interval.
  5. Switch to --follow while reproducing the problem so that new output is captured immediately.
  6. If the log still does not explain a stop, recreation, or health transition, run docker compose events --json with matching time bounds and correlate the records.
  7. When replicas are present, add --index to keep the investigation tied to one container.
