To improve your odds in Pokémon GO Trainer Battles, build a three-Pokémon team for the league you are entering, use type matchups to guide your choices, and manage Charged Attacks, Protect Shields, and switches with the whole match in mind. There is no guaranteed team or fixed shield-and-switch script: the right decision depends on the Pokémon and moves each side brings.
Choose a league and build a three-Pokémon team
Check the Battle screen for the league currently available, then make sure your team meets its CP rules. Niantic lists these league limits in its Trainer Battle guide:

Each Trainer Battle uses three Pokémon per side. Rather than choosing three favorites with the same strengths, aim for different types and attacks that give the party useful coverage. In GO Battle League, a party cannot include two or more Pokémon of the same species, according to Niantic’s Battle Parties help page.
League access can have additional requirements: Niantic’s help page says Ultra and Master League unlock when a Trainer owns at least three Pokémon above the listed lower CP thresholds. Check the current in-game rules before building or powering up a team, since access and seasonal formats may change.

Use type matchups to choose attacks and switches
Type effectiveness can change how much damage an attack deals. Pay attention to the in-game “super effective” and “not very effective” cues, and consider both types when a Pokémon has two. A dual-type Pokémon can have more than one weakness or resistance to account for. When an attack’s type matches the attacking Pokémon’s type, the attack receives a power boost. Niantic explains these mechanics in its type-effectiveness guide.
Switching can get a vulnerable Pokémon out of a bad matchup or bring in one better suited to the opponent. But switching does not pause the battle: the opponent can keep attacking while your Pokémon changes. Before switching, weigh the danger of staying in against the damage your incoming Pokémon may take during the transition.

Build Charged Attack energy with a move plan
Fast Attacks deal damage and generate energy for Charged Attacks. Charged Attacks have different energy costs, so a lower-cost move may become available more often, while a higher-cost option takes longer to prepare. Consider both energy generation and Charged Attack cost when assessing a Pokémon’s moves; Niantic outlines these factors in its attacks guide.
When your Charged Attack meter is full, you can keep using Fast Attacks and fill it again, allowing two Charged Attacks in succession. That is an option, not an automatic best play: timing may matter more if you need to pressure an opponent, preserve a shield, or avoid letting a matchup turn against you.

You can teach a second Charged Attack using Stardust and Candy, and use TMs to change a Pokémon’s moves. Check the moves available to your Pokémon and how they fit the league and team rather than assuming a particular move is always best.
Spend Protect Shields according to the match
Protect Shields block an opponent’s Charged Attack, but you have a limited number in a battle. Using one can preserve the Pokémon currently facing the attack; it also means one fewer shield is available for a later threat.

There is no universal rule for which attack to shield. Consider the role of the Pokémon you are protecting and the state of the match—for example, whether keeping it healthy matters to your remaining team. Avoid spending a shield by habit when the same resource may be more valuable later.

For global matchmaking, GO Battle League is available from Trainer Level 10, according to Niantic’s GO Battle League guide. Only matches started through GO Battle League affect its rank; battles with friends or nearby Trainers are not ranked matches. Make sure your connection is stable before starting, because a dropped connection can leave the opponent attacking while you try to rejoin.
What a win requires
A battle ends when one side’s Pokémon have all fainted or time runs out. If time expires, the winner is determined by which side dealt more damage. That means a useful strategy is not simply to chase knockouts: keep the team’s type coverage, energy, shields, and time remaining in view as the battle develops.
