To play Grand Theft Auto Online, launch the Grand Theft Auto V edition for your platform, choose its online mode, and follow the in-game prompts. On PC, a Rockstar Games account is required for installation and online play. On consoles, account requirements depend on the feature; check your platform’s current store and online-service requirements before you start.
Check your game edition and account requirements

Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is required on PC to install and play online. On consoles, it is not required for Story Mode, though some online features require one. See Rockstar’s account requirements for details. Console online-service requirements and game access can depend on your platform, region, and entitlement, so verify them in your platform’s current store. Rockstar also documents a specific entitlement caveat: on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode, and access through a free trial or subscription can affect continued access (Rockstar support, updated November 11, 2025).

Join a heist or host one
Joining and hosting have different requirements. Rockstar’s heist guidance says: “To host a Heist in GTA Online, your character must be Rank 12 and own a high-end apartment.” If you have not reached Rank 12 or do not own the apartment, you can still join a heist by accepting an invitation or using Quick Job.
| Option | What you need | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Join an invited heist | You need an invitation; Rank 12 and a high-end apartment are not required to join. | Accept the invitation in-game. |
| Join through Quick Job | Rank 12 and a high-end apartment are not required to join. | Open the in-game phone, select Quick Job, then choose “Play Heist.” |
| Host a heist | Reach Rank 12 and own a high-end apartment. | After meeting those requirements, wait for Lester’s call to access heists as a host. |
These host and join conditions are from Rockstar’s heist-access guide, last updated April 25, 2024.

Know what is optional—and what keeps changing
GTA+ is an optional membership, not a prerequisite for playing GTA Online. Rockstar lists it as available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; on PC, GTA Online benefits are limited to Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced. Rockstar says the membership can be cancelled at any time. Check Rockstar’s GTA+ information for current terms.
GTA Online continues to receive updates. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.73 notes include entries through October 1, 2026. For example, the 2026 update introduced the Kortz Center Heist, which requires buying an Art Studio for an owned Mansion through the in-game Prix Luxury Real Estate website. Treat new activities as update- and prerequisite-dependent, and check the current notes and in-game requirements before pursuing a particular one.
