Video games can give players practice with problem-solving when they ask them to plan, test ideas, respond to feedback, and change strategies. Research finds positive average effects in learning settings, but outcomes vary: games do not automatically improve general intelligence or everyday problem-solving, and guided practice appears more effective than game play alone.
What problem-solving practice can a game provide?
Depending on its design, a game may ask players to understand a goal, plan a sequence of actions, manage limited resources, keep track of changing conditions, test a solution, and revise it after seeing the result. These are opportunities to practise particular ways of approaching a problem—not proof that every game strengthens a general-purpose skill.

Feedback and iteration are important features to look for. When a player can try an approach, see what happened, and adjust, the game creates a cycle of decision and response. In an educational setting, prompts, instruction, or discussion can help players identify the strategy they used and connect it to what they are learning.

What does the research say?
Student problem-solving: positive average effects, with substantial variation
A 2025 three-level meta-analysis by Cai, Zhang, Liu, and Zhan combined 21 primary studies and 60 effect sizes on digital game-based learning and students’ problem-solving ability. It reported a positive overall effect (g = 0.654), alongside significant variation among study results (Q = 858.358, p < 0.001). In other words, the average was positive, but the results were not consistent across settings and studies. Read the 2025 meta-analysis.

Confidence is not the same as demonstrated skill
In that analysis, the estimated effect was larger in studies measuring perceived problem-solving ability (g = 1.498) than in studies measuring problem-solving skill (g = 0.440). Feeling more capable can matter, but self-perception should not be treated as equivalent to performing better on a skill measure.
Teaching strategies were associated with stronger results
The 2025 analysis reported a larger effect when digital game-based learning was combined with relevant teaching strategies (g = 1.246) than when game-based learning was used alone (g = 0.399). This supports a practical distinction: a game can be part of structured learning, with instruction or reflection around it, rather than being expected to teach a transferable skill by itself. The comparison does not establish one teaching formula that works for every game or learner.

Children’s social problem-solving
A 2023 systematic review by Yılmaz and Griffiths covered 35 studies of children’s social problem-solving through videogames and traditional games. It reported positive findings across educational-purpose games, serious games, and entertainment games. The authors also called for more studies using active control groups, and noted that the literature often focused on individual games, which limits how broadly results can be generalized. Cognitive training and broader learning are related, but not direct proof of everyday transfer
A 2023 video-game training meta-analysis included 63 studies, 118 investigations, and 2,079 participants; its overall cognitive training effect was g = 0.25. That is an estimate across cognitive outcomes, not a direct measure of everyday problem-solving. The analysis found selective transfer associated with gameplay features, rather than a simple rule that broad genres such as “action” or “strategy” reliably predict benefits. A 2016 review and meta-analysis of digital games in K–16 education found positive learning effects for digital-game versus non-game comparisons (g = 0.33) and for augmented versus standard game designs (g = 0.34). Those figures concern learning outcomes across the included studies, not general problem-solving specifically. The review also found that results varied with game mechanics, visual and narrative characteristics, and research quality. Read the 2016 review.
How to choose a game for useful practice
No individual title is established by this evidence as the best game for improving problem-solving. Choose by the kind of challenge and support the game offers, not just its genre label.

- Match the task to the skill you want to practise. A game might emphasize planning, logic and puzzles, resource allocation, spatial reasoning, or collaborative decisions.
- Look for chances to test and revise. Does the game show the consequences of a choice clearly enough for a player to learn from it and try a different approach?
- Consider learning support. Prompts, instruction, discussion, or reflection can help players name a strategy and connect it with a lesson.
- Be precise about the hoped-for outcome. Doing better at a game, feeling more confident, learning classroom material, and solving unfamiliar real-world problems are different outcomes. Evidence for one does not automatically establish another.
Educational problem-solving games are one category to consider, but the studies cited here do not verify a particular title, current product, ideal play schedule, or lasting benefit in ordinary life. Claims about a specific game should be judged on evidence for that game and the outcome being claimed.
What the evidence does not establish
The findings support a conditional conclusion: some game-based learning can help develop measured problem-solving ability, especially when paired with relevant teaching strategies. They do not show that playing any video game automatically improves general intelligence, that confidence gains equal measured skill gains, or that improvements transfer reliably to everyday problems over the long term. Study populations and outcomes also differ, so findings about students, children’s social problem-solving, cognition, and general learning should not be treated as interchangeable.
