Deal with a witch by keeping the fight short: use a bow if you can attack safely from range, or close in decisively while avoiding incoming potions. Witches can heal themselves, so trading damage slowly may give them time to recover. Their potion choices depend on the situation, and exact behavior can vary by edition and version.
Choose between ranged and melee attacks

Recognize the witch’s potion attacks
The Minecraft Wiki describes witches throwing splash potions conditionally, based on factors such as distance, health, and existing effects. It lists slowness at medium range, poison when the target meets a health condition and is not already poisoned, weakness at close range in some cases, and harming when the other conditions do not apply. The listed thresholds include 8–10 blocks for slowness, at least 8 health points for poison, and a 25% chance of weakness within 3 blocks; these are community-maintained, version-sensitive details, not universal guarantees. - Keep moving rather than standing still in the witch’s attack lane.
- Do not assume one distance is always safe: the potion selected depends on the situation.
- If you are poisoned or slowed, respond to the effect rather than continuing to trade hits as if nothing changed.
Use the opening when a witch drinks
A witch may drink a healing potion when injured, or drink fire resistance after fire damage, water breathing underwater, or swiftness when far from a target. The behavior reference says it cannot attack while drinking, creating a brief opportunity to deal damage. Maintain pressure when you see it drinking, but do not treat that opening as proof the witch cannot resume attacking immediately afterward.

Do not count on fire to finish the fight
Fire can prompt a witch to drink fire resistance, so it is not a dependable shortcut. If you use fire, be prepared to continue fighting after the witch resists it.
What drops from a witch?
Mojang’s Minecraft Java Edition 1.21 release notes state that witches always drop 4–8 redstone dust on death. That range is specific to the Java Edition 1.21 release notes; it should not be assumed for every edition or version. Minecraft’s official potion guide also notes that witches can be hunted for potion drops, without making those drops necessary to defeat one.

Where witches appear and potion basics
Swamp huts are a place to encounter witches. Minecraft’s official cauldron article says swamp huts always generate with a cauldron; the cauldron is part of the setting, not a countermeasure you need for the fight.

If you want to understand splash potions, Minecraft’s official splash-potion tutorial explains that they are made by combining a regular potion with gunpowder on a brewing stand, and that thrown potions affect nearby entities. This background is optional; you do not need to brew anything to deal with a witch.
