The game can use that result to trigger an action, command a teammate, or generate NPC dialogue; text-to-speech (TTS) can then voice a reply. Speech recognition is only one part of the process: it does not decide on its own what the game should do.
From microphone audio to a game response
A voice interaction begins as sound, not as a command the game already understands. A microphone captures the player’s voice, often alongside game audio and other background noise. The system must prepare that signal, determine what was said or intended, and pass a usable result to the part of the game that controls characters, dialogue, or actions.

In a common cascaded design, those responsibilities are divided into stages: audio capture and preparation, automatic speech recognition (ASR), game-side interpretation, and—if the response should be spoken—TTS. Each stage has a different job. ASR converts speech to text; it does not automatically make a character obey the words or decide what an NPC should say.
- Capture: The player speaks into a microphone, and the application sends the audio to a local or remote speech system. Realtime connections can transport audio using WebRTC or WebSockets, as described in OpenAI’s Realtime conversations documentation.
- Prepare the signal: The system can reduce noise, detect when speech begins and ends, divide audio into segments, and normalize the input. These steps matter in games, where gunshots, explosions, ambience, and other voices may overlap the player.
- Recognize speech: ASR, also called speech-to-text (STT), produces a transcript of the recognized words. A system can be tuned for game terminology and common gaming phrases, and language identification can help select an appropriate recognition path.
- Interpret and route: The game or a downstream dialogue system decides whether the transcript is conversation, a teammate instruction, or an actionable command. Application logic maps the recognized intent to a response or game behavior.
- Respond: The game may show text, change game state, trigger an action, or generate dialogue. If a character should speak, TTS converts response text into audio. A direct speech-to-speech model can instead accept audio and return audio without separate STT and TTS stages.
- Manage the turn: The game decides when the player’s turn has ended, when a response can play, and what to do if the player speaks over it. Realtime systems may stop or truncate audio that has not yet played when an interruption occurs.
The visible result—a teammate responding or an NPC answering—therefore depends on coordination between voice processing and the game. A transcript is an intermediate result, not proof that a command was understood correctly or that the requested action is valid in the current game state.

What happens after speech recognition?
Once a system has a transcript, the game needs a policy for what it means. The same phrase might be dialogue in one context, a command in another, or an utterance that should not change the game at all. The cited materials describe use cases such as natural NPC dialogue, voice control of AI teammates, and speech converted into game-progression commands. They do not establish one universal architecture for deciding which action a transcript should trigger.
NPC conversation
For conversation, recognized words can become input to a dialogue or response-generation system. That system produces text or another response representation; the game then decides how to present it. If the character answers aloud, TTS produces the voice. The character’s line and the game event associated with it are separate concerns: spoken words do not themselves guarantee that the game has changed a quest, opened a door, or advanced a scene.
Teammate instructions and actions
A player may speak to an AI teammate or ask for an in-game action. The application must connect the interpreted request to something the game can execute. That means the voice pipeline needs a handoff to game logic; the speech recognizer alone does not define the game’s command system. A useful implementation decision is to determine what forms of output the game needs from the voice layer—for example, text, an interpreted intent, or audio—before choosing how to connect it.

Spoken replies and character animation
When an NPC response is spoken, TTS can turn text into audio. Microsoft’s February 28, 2026 update to Game development with Azure Speech in Foundry Tools describes game dialogue uses, standard and custom voices, emotional styles, and SSML controls. It also describes viseme data, which can drive 2D or 3D avatar mouth movements in sync with synthesized speech. These features concern how an audio reply is voiced and presented; they do not replace the game logic that determines what the character says or does.
Three architecture patterns
There is no single voice-AI architecture that is best for every game. The main choice is where recognition, interpretation, and synthesis occur, and whether the system needs an explicit transcript or audio input and output directly.
| Pattern | How it works | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Cascaded ASR → dialogue or command logic → optional TTS | Separate components recognize speech, interpret it or generate a response, and optionally synthesize spoken output. NVIDIA’s Voice Pipelines documentation describes separate ASR, LLM, and TTS workers. | End-to-end response time across stages; transcript access and observability; control over each component; integration effort; supported languages; and where each component runs. |
| Direct speech-to-speech | A realtime model takes audio input and returns audio without distinct STT and TTS steps. OpenAI documents this approach, and NVIDIA documents audio-in/audio-out serving. | Audio transport; session state; interruption and turn-taking behavior; control over responses; deployment requirements; and whether the game still needs a transcript or explicit command representation. |
| On-device voice stack | Recognition, language processing, and synthesis run locally on supported hardware. Qualcomm describes this approach for its Snapdragon Game AI SDK. | Supported devices and engines; available local compute; offline requirements; and how voice workloads share hardware with rendering, physics, and other game tasks. |
These patterns are not a ranking. A direct audio-to-audio model may avoid distinct recognition and synthesis steps, but a game that needs an explicit transcript or a tightly controlled command handoff still has to account for those needs. A cascaded system exposes distinct stages, but it also has to coordinate them. An on-device design can avoid dependence on cloud connectivity where supported, but actual capability depends on the target device and workload.

Latency: what the 160–350 ms figure does—and does not—mean
Level Infinite’s ASR Service documentation reports end-to-end real-time recognition output of 160–350 ms. The page was last updated July 20, 2026. This is the vendor’s stated latency for that ASR service, not an independent benchmark, a universal recognition figure, or a timing promise for an NPC’s complete answer.
The full player-perceived delay can include audio capture and transport, speech preparation, recognition or direct model processing, dialogue or command interpretation, game logic, and optional TTS and playback. Network transport may also matter in a service-based setup. The cited documentation does not give a cross-vendor accuracy comparison or a benchmark for the complete speech-to-game-response loop, so the ASR figure cannot establish how quickly or reliably another game will respond.
For a meaningful implementation comparison, measure the time from the player’s utterance to the response the player actually perceives. Measuring only recognition output leaves out later work. Also distinguish a response that begins quickly from one that completes quickly; the available documentation does not give a universal target for either.

Design choices that shape the experience
Noise and game vocabulary
Game audio can compete with speech. Level Infinite describes handling gunshots, explosions, ambient voices, voice activity detection, and segmentation in its ASR service. It also describes optimizing recognition for gaming vocabulary and common gaming phrases. These are relevant capabilities to check, not a guarantee that every utterance will be recognized under every mix of sound, microphone, and player voice.
Consider the terms players will actually say: character names, locations, equipment, abbreviations, and commands specific to the game. If those words are important, verify how the selected system handles them rather than assuming a general-purpose recognizer will interpret them reliably.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLanguage and region
Language availability and service-region coverage can affect which players can use a voice feature and where their audio is processed. Level Infinite lists supported languages and regional service nodes for its offering. Microsoft advises developers to check locale and region support for its speech features. Confirm the current documentation for the intended languages and player regions; support for one language or locale should not be generalized to all regions or deployments.

Turn-taking and interruptions
Voice activity detection (VAD) estimates when speech starts and stops, helping a system determine when to process an utterance or return a turn to the game. OpenAI’s Realtime documentation also describes push-to-talk. That gives players explicit control over capture and can avoid waiting for a VAD timeout in some applications, though it changes the interaction: the player must press or hold a control rather than simply speak.
Decide what happens when a player starts speaking while an NPC is talking. A realtime system may need to stop or truncate audio that has not played yet, while the game must decide whether to cancel, pause, or continue the underlying character response. The cited material establishes interruption handling as a design concern; it does not prescribe one behavior for every game.
Cloud or local processing
A service-based design sends audio to a speech service or model and may require network connectivity. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Game AI SDK describes an on-device approach that can run without cloud connectivity on supported Snapdragon hardware. That is not a claim that every device or game can run every voice workload locally: confirm device, SDK, and engine support, and account for available compute and competing game workloads.
A practical implementation checklist
Before choosing a pipeline, define what the game needs from a spoken interaction and test the full path rather than evaluating a recognizer in isolation.
- Specify the outcome: Decide whether the player is talking to an NPC, issuing teammate instructions, invoking a command, or using more than one of these interaction types.
- Choose the required output: Establish whether game logic needs recognized text, an interpreted command, generated dialogue, spoken audio, or a combination. This helps distinguish a cascaded pipeline from a direct speech-to-speech design.
- Check player and platform coverage: Verify languages, locales, service regions, device support, and game-engine integration in the current documentation for the candidate service or SDK.
- Test representative audio: Include relevant game sounds, voices, microphones, and game-specific vocabulary. Check whether speech is segmented and recognized as intended when audio overlaps.
- Define turn behavior: Select or design VAD or push-to-talk behavior, decide when an utterance is complete, and specify how the game handles a player interrupting synthesized dialogue.
- Measure the whole interaction: Track the delay from player speech to the visible action or audible reply, not just the time to produce a transcript. Include transport, interpretation, game-side handling, and TTS where applicable.
- Validate the in-game handoff: Confirm that recognized or interpreted input reaches the intended game behavior and that responses fit the current game context. Recognition output alone is not a command execution mechanism.
The cited documentation describes capabilities and design patterns, not a tested setup for a particular game. Actual performance, language coverage, integration effort, and supported devices depend on the selected system and deployment. Treat vendor capability and latency statements as specific to the named offering, rather than evidence that a complete voice interaction will behave identically elsewhere.
