Minecraft began in 2009 as a small project by Swedish programmer Markus Persson, better known as Notch. Its first prototype, called Cave Game, let players dig and build in a generated world. Persson added ideas over time, drawing on several games rather than copying a single one; the project grew into a public release and reached version 1.0 in November 2011.
Who created Minecraft?
Markus Persson started work on Minecraft in 2009. In a 2010 Reddit AMA, he introduced himself as the person who made the game and said he had begun work the previous year. He also recalled that Minecraft started making a profit after a couple of months, and that he and two friends had formed a company to support development. Read Persson’s 2010 AMA.
What was Minecraft originally called?
The early prototype was known as Cave Game. The project was briefly called Minecraft: Order of the Stone before the name was shortened to Minecraft. Xbox Wire’s 2024 retrospective places the start of development about a week before May 16, 2009, though the sources do not provide a precise day-by-day account of the prototype’s creation. Xbox Wire’s timeline of Minecraft’s first 15 years.
What inspired Minecraft?
Persson described several influences behind his experiments. In a July 2010 interview, he said he was playing Dwarf Fortress and wanted to make a similar game with an interface like RollerCoaster Tycoon. While experimenting with first-person play, he came across Infiniminer on the Tigsource forums and liked its visual style. Xbox Wire’s retrospective also names Dungeon Keeper as an inspiration. These are influences Persson and Xbox Wire identified, not evidence that Minecraft was copied from any one game. Read the 2010 Minecraft Forum interview.

- January 2010: Crafting was added.
- June 2010: Minecarts arrived.
- August 2010: An early Survival multiplayer version appeared.
- November 18, 2011: Minecraft reached its full 1.0 release during Minecon.
Xbox Wire reports that Minecraft had passed 100,000 players by January 2010 and reached one million players by January 2011. Those are historical milestones for the game’s early audience, not current player counts. Xbox Wire’s retrospective recounts the early release timeline and player milestones.

How did players shape Minecraft after its beginning?
Minecraft continued to evolve after version 1.0. In a 2024 account of the game’s development, Mojang says player feedback has influenced ideas and revisions. It points to community suggestions for cherry groves and wolf variations as examples of player input shaping later additions. Mojang’s account of Minecraft’s development.

Minecraft’s history is best understood as a series of experiments and expansions: a freely buildable prototype, additional modes and mechanics, multiplayer, and ongoing changes informed in part by its community. Persson’s stated inspirations help explain the direction of those experiments, but no single influence accounts for the finished game.
