Women’s rugby kit should fit the player, support comfort and movement, and meet rugby’s clothing rules. The clearest official guidance concerns sports-bra fitting and the design limits for padded garments; available evidence does not establish one ideal jersey pattern, fabric, or cut for all women players.
What good fit is meant to achieve
Fit is not only a matter of appearance. World Rugby says ill-fitting or inappropriate sportswear can affect performance and contribute to exercise-induced breast pain through inadequate support or chafing. Its advice is that female players who wear sports bras or breast padding should seek professional sizing and fitting advice. World Rugby’s female-player guidance also says breast injuries should be assessed and treated like other soft-tissue injuries.
World Rugby’s women’s health hub recognizes that women’s rugby should follow its own path rather than simply mimic the men’s game. That principle supports taking women players’ needs seriously, but it does not establish a particular waist shape, sleeve pattern, seam placement, fabric blend, or garment length as superior. World Rugby Women’s Health states this position on a page dated 23 April 2024.
Sports bras and breast support
There is no single sports-bra style that the cited guidance recommends for every athlete. World Rugby Passport describes a properly fitted high-support sports bra as one strategy shown to relieve breast-pain symptoms. It notes that compression styles may not provide enough support for everyone, while encapsulation styles may be an option for athletes with greater support needs. The practical question is whether the individual garment fits and provides the support its wearer needs—not whether one style is universally best. World Rugby Passport’s breast-health guidance is educational guidance, not an individualized medical prescription.

World Rugby’s 2020 female-player page attributes several findings to Breast Research Australia (BRA). The page does not state the underlying studies’ publication years or sample sizes, and the findings are not identified as rugby-only results:
- 60% of women in the cited contact-sport research reported a breast injury.
- Among those reporting an injury, 33% said it adversely affected performance.
- 50% of those who wore breast padding perceived their chosen padding as ineffective.
- 49% of those who had experienced breast injury had not reported it or sought treatment.
- A previous BRA study found 85% were not wearing a size or fit suitable for their body shape.
These figures describe the populations reported on World Rugby’s page; they should not be read as current prevalence estimates for all women rugby players. The page attributes them to BRA but does not provide the study years or sample sizes.

What padded garments must allow and withstand
World Rugby’s body-padding specification gives designers a direct ergonomic brief: padding should minimize discomfort, and normal playing movements should not be impeded. It also addresses materials and finishes: they should withstand ordinary exposure to ultraviolet light, dirt, perspiration, toiletries, soaps, and detergents, and should not have rough or rigid finishes that could harm the wearer or another player. The World Rugby body-padding specification is specifically about rugby union.
The specification describes compliant body padding as intended to protect against cuts and abrasions. That stated purpose is not evidence that padding prevents concussion, major impacts, or breast injury.

Match rules limit what players may wear
Match clothing is governed by World Rugby Regulation 12, which should be read alongside the current Law 4 and the relevant performance specifications. The rules allow specified compliant items, including body padding and headgear, while restricting other clothing that exceeds the regulation’s stated thickness limit. Teams making match-day decisions should check the current official text rather than rely on a summary. World Rugby Regulation 12.

For jerseys, shorts, support garments, and padding, evaluate the actual item and player rather than assume a women’s label guarantees a better fit. A player looking for “women’s rugby shorts,” for example, still needs to check fit and comfort on her own body; that phrase is a reader’s search, not evidence about how common any availability problem is.

- Fit and sizing: Does the item fit the individual? For sports bras or breast padding, can the player obtain professional fitting advice?
- Support: For a sports bra, does its style and fit provide the support the wearer needs?
- Comfort: Does the garment avoid discomfort and chafing during play?
- Movement: For padding, can the player make normal playing movements without restriction?
- Materials and finish: For padding, are the materials durable under ordinary use, and are the finishes free of rough or rigid features that could cause harm?
- Rules: Does the item comply with Regulation 12 and the relevant specifications for match use?
