Xbox backward compatibility lets selected older games run on newer Xbox consoles, but the exact title must be supported. Digital games are accessed through the account that owns them; disc games require a compatible disc-drive console and the disc each time you play. On Xbox Series S, only digital games are supported.
Which Xbox games work on newer consoles?
Compatibility is title-specific, not a guarantee that an entire older library transfers. Xbox Series X|S supports selected Xbox One, Xbox 360, and original Xbox games. Xbox One supports selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Compatibility does not work backward: an Xbox One game does not run on an Xbox 360 or the original Xbox.

Check the official Xbox backward-compatibility catalog for the exact game and console. A digital purchase or a disc alone does not make an unsupported title playable, and there is no reliable all-games percentage to apply to an individual library.
How digital backward-compatible games work
Sign in to the Xbox account that owns the digital game. If the title is supported for that console, it should appear in the console’s Ready to Install area, where you can download it. If it is not in the supported catalog, ownership by itself does not make it run.

Microsoft’s digital-goods rules include account and territory conditions, so a game’s Store availability and the terms for the account’s region can also matter.
How backward-compatible disc games work
- Check that the exact disc game is in the backward-compatibility catalog for your console.
- Insert the disc into a console with an optical drive. The console downloads the game to its storage; the disc is not necessarily the source of the game data during play.
- Leave the disc in the drive whenever you play. The console uses it to verify access to the game.
As Microsoft explained for the Series X|S launch in October 2020, “Simply insert your favorite backward compatible Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc into your Xbox Series X, install the game, and you’ll be ready to play.” The quotation describes the Series X disc path and does not mean every Xbox disc is compatible.

- The single-player portion of Portal 2 introduces dynamic characters, fresh puzzle elements, and a larger set of devious test chambers
- The two-player mode features a separate campaign with unique story, test chambers, and two new player characters.
- Advanced use of physics allow for the creation of a whole new range of interesting challenges, producing a much larger but not harder game.
- A massive sequel to the title named 2007's Game of the Year by over 30 publications worldwide.
- Players explore areas of the Aperture Science Labs and reunite with GLaDOS, the murderous computer companion.
Can Xbox Series S play disc games?
No. Xbox Series S is digital-games-only and cannot read or authenticate game discs. If your compatible older games are on disc, you need a compatible Xbox console with an optical drive to use them directly. Check the exact console model before buying: the disc path depends on having a drive, not just on the Xbox Series X|S name.
Backward compatibility is not the same as Smart Delivery
Backward compatibility means a supported game from an earlier Xbox generation can run on a newer console. Smart Delivery is a separate feature for eligible games released across Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; it provides the appropriate version for the console. Neither feature means every older game gets a Series X|S edition or an automatic graphics upgrade. Microsoft notes that specific features vary by game.

What to check before you try a game
- Confirm the exact title in the current Xbox compatibility catalog.
- Confirm which console you have, especially whether it has an optical drive.
- Identify whether your entitlement is digital, tied to the owning account, or physical, requiring a supported disc in the drive.
- Look up the game’s own listing if you want to know about a specific enhancement or version; compatibility alone does not establish one.
